Supervised Collective Classification for Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing utilizes the wisdom of crowds for collective classification via
information (e.g., labels of an item) provided by labelers. Current
crowdsourcing algorithms are mainly unsupervised methods that are unaware of
the quality of crowdsourced data. In this paper, we propose a supervised
collective classification algorithm that aims to identify reliable labelers
from the training data (e.g., items with known labels). The reliability (i.e.,
weighting factor) of each labeler is determined via a saddle point algorithm.
The results on several crowdsourced data show that supervised methods can
achieve better classification accuracy than unsupervised methods, and our

Type-II Topological Dirac Semimetals: Theory and Materials Prediction (VAl3 family)
The discoveries of Dirac and Weyl semimetal states in spin-orbit compounds
led to the realizations of elementary particle analogs in table-top
experiments. In this paper, we propose the concept of a three-dimensional
type-II Dirac fermion and identify a new topological semimetal state in the
large family of transition-metal icosagenides, MA3 (M=V, Nb, Ta; A=Al, Ga, In).
We show that the VAl3 family features a pair of strongly Lorentz-violating
type-II Dirac nodes and that each Dirac node consists of four type-II Weyl
nodes with chiral charge +/-1 via symmetry breaking. Furthermore, we predict
the Landau level spectrum arising from the type-II Dirac fermions in VAl3 that
is distinct from that of known Dirac semimetals. We also show a topological
phase transition from a type-II Dirac semimetal to a quadratic Weyl semimetal
or a topological crystalline insulator via crystalline distortions. The new
type-II Dirac fermions, their novel magneto-transport response, the topological
tunability and the large number of compounds make VAl3 an exciting platform to
explore the wide-ranging topological phenomena associated with
Lorentz-violating Dirac fermions in electrical and optical transport,
spectroscopic and device-based experiments.Comment: 28 pages, 7 Figure
Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with tubo-ovarian abscess at a tertiary care hospital in Northern Taiwan
Background/PurposeControversy exists regarding the need for surgical intervention in patients with tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA). This study was aimed at investigating the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in patients with TOA at a tertiary care hospital in Taiwan.MethodsThe medical records of 83 patients who presented at the hospital with TOA between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2007, were retrospectively reviewed. Outcomes of patients who received medical treatment alone or underwent surgical intervention were analyzed using univariate and logistic regression analyses.ResultsAmong the 83 patients with TOA, 13 patients (15.7%) underwent surgical intervention, and 70 patients (84.3%) received medical treatment alone. Significant variables related to surgical treatment in the univariate analysis were length of stay (short vs. long; t = −2.267, p = 0.026), department of admission (emergency room vs. outpatient department; χ2 = 7.459, p = 0.006), number of live births (nulliparous vs. multiparous; χ2 = 18.202, p = 0.001), and C-reactive protein (CRP) level (high vs. low; t = −2.250, p = 0.028). Logistic regression analysis performed to determine influential factors for surgical treatment showed that the operation odds ratio of three to four live births versus no live births was 33.995 (p = 0.043) and that of two live births versus no live births was 13.598 (p = 0.026).ConclusionPatients with TOA who underwent surgery had a longer duration of hospitalization. Among the patients who underwent surgical intervention, those admitted to the emergency room had higher CRP levels and were more likely to be multiparous
