    Applying Web 2.0 in medical-related organizations

    This study investigated the application of Web 2.0 to medical-related organizations. Thirty organizations participated in an online survey asking their perceived purposes, benefits and difficulties in using Web 2.0. The selected organizations fell into three categories: university medical libraries, hospitals, and non-profit organizations. Fourteen (46.7%) organizations were currently using Web 2.0, ten (33.3%) planned to use it in the future and six (20%) would not consider using it. A phone interview was further conducted with eight organizations (26.7%) about their opinion on Web 2.0. Results showed that most participants found the application of Web 2.0 beneficial to their organizations.     A randomized, controlled clinical trial: the effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on generalized anxiety disorder among Chinese community patients: protocol for a randomized trial

    <b>Background</b> Research suggests that an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) program may be effective in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorders. Our objective is to compare the clinical effectiveness of the MBCT program with a psycho-education programme and usual care in reducing anxiety symptoms in people suffering from generalized anxiety disorder.<p></p> <b>Methods and Design</b> A three armed randomized, controlled clinical trial including 9-month post-treatment follow-up is proposed. Participants screened positive using the Structure Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) for general anxiety disorder will be recruited from community-based clinics. 228 participants will be randomly allocated to the MBCT program plus usual care, psycho-education program plus usual care or the usual care group. Validated Chinese version of instruments measuring anxiety and worry symptoms, depression, quality of life and health service utilization will be used. Our primary end point is the change of anxiety and worry score (Beck Anxiety Inventory and Penn State Worry Scale) from baseline to the end of intervention. For primary analyses, treatment outcomes will be assessed by ANCOVA, with change in anxiety score as the baseline variable, while the baseline anxiety score and other baseline characteristics that significantly differ between groups will serve as covariates.<p></p> <b>Discussion</b> This is a first randomized controlled trial that compare the effectiveness of MBCT with an active control, findings will advance current knowledge in the management of GAD and the way that group intervention can be delivered and inform future research

    Environmental Citizenship in Primary Formal Education

    The concept of Environmental Citizenship, as it has been developed in this project, calls for the development of specific awareness, attitudes, skills, behaviours and competences that need to be cultivated from early childhood for active civic participation. Primary formal education could provide opportunities for the achievement of these goals. In this chapter, we elaborate on how Environmental Citizenship, which provides the specifics of age and formal settings, could be approached and the educational strategies that could be recommended or avoided based on the existing literature. This chapter also provides an overview of the most important educational aims regarding the development of Environmental Citizenship in primary formal education. These include environmental sensitivity, a sense of justice, a basic understanding of ecological systems, necessary skills for the investigation of ecological and social phenomena, and action skills that relate to active participation in community issues. We suggest that successful educational interventions, integrated pedagogical approaches and key designing principles could promote Environmental Citizenship at primary schools. In addition, effective training and professional development programmes can equip teachers with the knowledge, values, skills and strategies necessary to implement Environmental Citizenship at this level

    Validation of a Chinese version of the dental anxiety inventory

    Objectives: To translate the English version of Dental Anxiety Inventory (DAxI) and its short-form (SDAxI) and to validate their use in Hong Kong Chinese. Methods: The DAxI and SDAxI were translated into Chinese. A total of 500 adults (18-64 years) were interviewed, the Chinese DAxI, Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were completed. Based on their initial DAxI scores, 135 interviewees were invited to attend a dental examination 1 month later. Then, the subjects completed the DAxI again, together with Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) which measured the state anxiety level of the participants. Two months after the initial interview, all 500 subjects were asked to complete the DAxI again. Another 300 adults were recruited and interviewed for the SDAxI validation. Results: Cronbach's alpha of the Chinese DAxI and SDAxI were 0.77 and 0.80 and the test-retest correlation coefficients were 0.90 and 0.84, respectively. High correlation between BAI and DAxI scores and its stability over time supported construct validity of the Chinese DAxI. Small positive correlations between the DAxI and other subscales of the SCL-90, DASS and STAI supported discriminant validity of the instrument. The SDAxI demonstrated comparable validity and reliability with DAxI. Conclusion: The translated Chinese DAxI demonstrated good validity and reliability. It is available for use in dental anxiety research in adult Chinese. In situations where a short-form is desirable, the Chinese SDAxI is a simple, valid, reliable and interpretable scale for measuring dental anxiety in both research and dental practice. © Blackwell Munksgaard, 2005.postprin

    Parallel Session 1: paper no. 743Wikis, as one of the Web 2.0 social networking tools, have been increasingly used to engage students in learning with others within a collaborative environment. Hence, researchers want to determine whether such interaction produces learning synergy in an online learning community. In this study, we empirically investigate the degree of individual acceptance and the level of usage of wikis by examining the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Conceptually, we examine perceived usefulness and perceived ease-of-use, and their impacts on the attitude toward the use of wikis and the intention to use wikis. One hundred and forty-two Hong Kong junior secondary school students participated in this research and completed a group work by using a wiki. Quantitative data from a questionnaire were collected to test the conceptual model by using regression. The results would be useful for ascertaining whether the target variables are influential in explaining students’ collaborative work with the use of wikis.
