We calculate the form factor of the quark energy momentum tensor and thereby extract the quark orbital angular momentum of the nucleon. The calculation is done on a quenched 163×2416^3 \times 24 lattice at β=6.0\beta = 6.0 and with Wilson fermions at κ\kappa = 0.148, 0.152, 0.154 and 0.155. We calculate the disconnected insertion stochastically which employs the Z2Z_2 noise with an unbiased subtraction. This proves to be an efficient method of reduce the error from the noise. We find that the total quark contribution to the proton spin is 0.29±0.070.29 \pm 0.07. From this we deduce that the quark orbital angular momentum is 0.17±0.080.17 \pm 0.08 and predict the gluon spin to be 0.21±0.070.21 \pm 0.07, i.e. about 40% of the proton spin is due to the glue.Comment: LATTICE99(Matrix Elements), 3 pages, 3 figure

A Multiple Commutator Formula for the Sum of Feynman Diagrams

    Get PDF
In the presence of a large parameter, such as mass or energy, leading behavior of individual Feynman diagrams often get cancelled in the sum. This is known to happen in large-NcN_c QCD in the presence of a baryon, and also in the case of high-energy electron-electron as well as quark-quark scatterings. We present an exact combinatorial formula, involving multiple commutators of the vertices, which can be used to compute such cancellations. It is a non-abelian generalization of the eikonal formula, and will be applied in subsequent publications to study the consistency of large-NcN_c QCD involving baryons, as well as high-energy quark-quark scattering in ordinary QCD.Comment: uu-encoded latex file with two postscript figure

Radiative and Semileptonic B Decays Involving Higher K-Resonances in the Final States

We study the radiative and semileptonic B decays involving a spin-JJ resonant KJ()K_J^{(*)} with parity (1)J(-1)^J for KJK_J^* and (1)J+1(-1)^{J+1} for KJK_J in the final state. Using the large energy effective theory (LEET) techniques, we formulate BKJ()B \to K_J^{(*)} transition form factors in the large recoil region in terms of two independent LEET functions ζKJ()\zeta_\perp^{K_J^{(*)}} and ζKJ()\zeta_\parallel^{K_J^{(*)}}, the values of which at zero momentum transfer are estimated in the BSW model. According to the QCD counting rules, ζ,KJ()\zeta_{\perp,\parallel}^{K_J^{(*)}} exhibit a dipole dependence in q2q^2. We predict the decay rates for BKJ()γB \to K_J^{(*)} \gamma, BKJ()+B \to K_J^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^- and BKJ()ννˉB \to K_J^{(*)}\nu \bar{\nu}. The branching fractions for these decays with higher KK-resonances in the final state are suppressed due to the smaller phase spaces and the smaller values of ζ,KJ()\zeta^{K_J^{(*)}}_{\perp,\parallel}. Furthermore, if the spin of KJ()K_J^{(*)} becomes larger, the branching fractions will be further suppressed due to the smaller Clebsch-Gordan coefficients defined by the polarization tensors of the KJ()K_J^{(*)}. We also calculate the forward backward asymmetry of the BKJ()+B \to K_J^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^- decay, for which the zero is highly insensitive to the KK-resonances in the LEET parametrization.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, 7 tables;contents and figures corrected, title and references revise

Charmless BPPB \to PP decays using flavor SU(3) symmetry

The decays of BB mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar (PP) mesons are analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3). Symmetry breaking is taken into account in tree (TT) amplitudes through ratios of decay constants; exact SU(3) is assumed elsewhere. Acceptable fits to BππB \to \pi \pi and BKπB \to K \pi branching ratios and CP asymmetries are obtained with tree, color-suppressed (CC), penguin (PP), and electroweak penguin (PEWP_{EW}) amplitudes. Crucial additional terms for describing processes involving η\eta and η\eta' include a large flavor-singlet penguin amplitude (SS) as proposed earlier and a penguin amplitude PtuP_{tu} associated with intermediate tt and uu quarks. For the B+π+ηB^+ \to \pi^+ \eta' mode a term StuS_{tu} associated with intermediate tt and uu quarks also may be needed. Values of the weak phase γ\gamma are obtained consistent with an earlier analysis of BVPB \to VP decays, where VV denotes a vector meson, and with other analyses of CKM parameters.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. Model Analysis of Time Reversal Symmetry Test in the Caltech Fe-57 Gamma-Transition Experiment

The CALTECH gamma-transition experiment testing time reversal symmetry via the E2/M1 mulipole mixing ratio of the 122 keV gamma-line in Fe-57 has already been performed in 1977. Extending an earlier analysis in terms of an effective one-body potential, this experiment is now analyzed in terms of effective one boson exchange T-odd P-even nucleon nucleon potentials. Within the model space considered for the Fe-57 nucleus no contribution from isovector rho-type exchange is possible. The bound on the coupling strength phi_A from effective short range axial-vector type exchange induced by the experimental bound on sin(eta) leads to phi_A < 10^{-2}.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex 3.

Heavy quarkonium: progress, puzzles, and opportunities

    Get PDF
A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the BB-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies. This review systematically addresses all these matters and concludes by prioritizing directions for ongoing and future efforts.Comment: 182 pages, 112 figures. Editors: N. Brambilla, S. Eidelman, B. Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    Get PDF
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter
