    Quasiparticle band alignment and stacking-independent exciton in MA2_2Z4_4 (M = Mo, W, Ti; A= Si, Ge; Z = N, P, As)

    Motivated by the recently synthesized two-dimensional semiconducting MoSi2_2N4_4, we systematically investigate the quasiparticle band alignment and exciton in monolayer MA2_2Z4_4 (M = Mo, W, Ti; A= Si, Ge; Z = N, P, As) using ab initio GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. Compared with the results from density functional theory (DFT), our GW calculations reveal substantially more significant band gaps and different absolute quasiparticle energy but predict the same types of band alignments

    Using chitosan as a thickener for electrospinning dilute PVA solutions to improve fibre uniformity

    Chitosan was added to PVA aqueous solutions as a thickener to improve the electrospinning process. The presence of a small amount of chitosan considerably improved the uniformity of as-spun nanofibres. This improvement is attributed to its significant effect on the solution viscosity and conductivity, with only a slight impact on the surface tension. The concentration of the PVA required to produce bead-free and uniform nanofibres was reduced with the increase in chitosan concentration. The chitosan thickener suppressed the jet break-up and facilitated the jet stretching so that fine and uniform fibres could be electrospun even from a dilute PVA solution.<br /

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To investigate the effect of oxidized low density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) on tubular epithelial-mesenchymal transition (TEMT) induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and its mechanism.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>NRK-52E cells were incubated with ox-LDL (0, 25, 50, and 100 μg/ml) for 24 hours or pre-treated with the chemical inhibitor of the LOX-1 receptor polyinosinic acid (poly I) and carrageenan or the antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), the cells were then exposed to 50 μg/ml of ox-LDL.The expression of LOX-I, E-cadherin, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were analyzed by real-time PCR, western blotting analysis, immunofluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ox-LDL increased the expression of LOX-1 mRNA and protein in a dose-dependent manner from 0 to 100 μg/ml (P < 0.05). Following the increase in the LOX-1 protein level, the lipid intake, ROS generation and α-SMA expression increased; however, the E-cadherin level decreased. The pre-treatment with poly I or carrageenan or NAC significantly inhibited the LOX-1 expression, α-SMA expression, the lipid intake and ROS generation and reversed decrease of E-cadherin expression induced by ox-LDL. Meanwhile, the ROS generation were associated with a increase in the LOX-1 expression. The α-SMA expression was positively correlated with the ROS generation and LOX-1 expression, and the E-cadherin expression was negatively correlated with the ROS generation and LOX-1 expression.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>LOX-1 and ROS may play a important role in epithelial-mesenchymal transition of NRK52E induced by OX-LDL.</p

    Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in critical airway interventional therapy: A review

    IntroductionExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is widely used during refractory cardiac or respiratory failure, and some case reports described ECMO utilization in critical airway interventional therapy.MethodsEligible reports about patients receiving airway interventional therapy under ECMO were retrieved from Web of Science, Embase, Medline, and Cochrane databases up to 1 August 2022.ResultsForty-eight publications including 107 patients who underwent ECMO for critical airway problems met the inclusion criteria. The critical airway problem that was reported the most was tumor-associated airway obstruction (n = 66, 61.7%). The second most reported etiology was postoperative airway collapse or stenosis (n = 19, 17.8%). The main interventional therapies applied were airway stent placement or removal (n = 61, 57.0%), mass removal (n = 22, 20.6%), and endotracheal intubation (n = 12, 11.2%) by bronchoscopy. The median ECMO duration was 39.5 hours. Eleven patients had ECMO-associated complications, including seven cases of airway hemorrhage, one case of arteriovenous fistula, one case of vein rupture and hematoma, one case of foot ischemia, and one case of neuropraxia of the cannulation site. In total, 91.6% of the patients survived and were discharged from the hospital.ConclusionECMO appears to be a viable form of life support for patients undergoing interventional therapy for critical airway problems

    Texture evolution induced by twinning and dynamic recrystallization in dilute Mg-1Sn-1Zn-1Al alloy during hot compression

    Texture evolution of an extruded dilute Mg-1Sn-1Zn-1Al alloy was thoroughly investigated based on the twinning and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior via hot compression at a strain rate of 10 s−1 and temperature of 225°C. It was found that the types and intensities of the texture are strongly dependent on the fraction of twins and DRX modes as well as regions where sub-grain boundaries (sub-GBs) are intensively accumulated. At the initial stage of deformation, the formation of compression direction (CD)-tilted basal texture was mainly determined by the occurrence of {101¯2} extension twins. As the strain increases, the variation in the texture intensity was greatly dominated by the DRX modes but the type of main texture remained unchanged. These findings are of great importance for texture modification of wrought Mg-Sn-based alloys during post-deformation

    Modified Dachengqi Tang improves decreased gastrointestinal motility in postoperative esophageal cancer patients

    AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the clinical effects of modified Dachengqi Tang (DCQT) on promoting gastrointestinal motility in post-operative esophageal cancer patients.MethodsSixty postoperative esophageal cancer patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to the modified treatment group or the control group (30 patients in each group). Patients in the treatment group were given DCQT made from decocted herbs and administered via nasojejunal tube at a dosage of 150 mL. Gastrointestinal motility was assessed by recording time for recovery of bowel sounds, flatus, defecation, and the total amount of gastric drainage during the first three postoperative days. Plasma motilin (MTL) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were measured one hour before and three days after surgery.ResultsCompared with the control group, the times to first bowel sound, flatus, and defecation were significantly shorter and there was less gastric drainage in the treatment group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, and P < 0.05, respectively). In the treatment group, postoperative plasma MTL was significantly higher (P < 0.01) and VIP was significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no difference found in either MTL or VIP from before to after operation in the treatment group (P > 0.05). MTL was significantly lower and VIP was higher postoperatively in the control group, compared to before surgery (P < 0.01).ConclusionsModified DCQT effectively improved decreased gastrointestinal motility in postoperative esophageal cancer patients by increasing MTL and reducing VIP

    Behavioral Responses of Apis mellifera Adult Workers to Odors from Healthy Brood and Diseased Brood

    Studies of adult workers’ responses to infected brood were undertaken to isolate discrete volatile compounds that elicited honeybee hygienic behavior. Using a freeze-killed brood assay, we determined that in healthy colonies adult workers recognized and emptied infected cells with a 95% clearance rate. SPME-GC-MS results emptied &gt;95% infected cells indicated differences in the composition and relative content of volatile compounds released by healthy and diseased brood. Additionally, we determined that the main volatile compound released from the pathogen Ascosphaera apis was phenethyl alcohol. The Y-tube olfactometer indicated that 10- to 20-day-old workers of healthy colonies, but only 15-day-old workers of diseased colonies, were significantly sensitive to differences in characteristic volatile compounds. This information could facilitate honey bee selection based on mechanisms that contribute to chalkbrood disease tolerance
