Maximizing Hadron Collider Sensitivity to Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Models
We consider typical hadron collider detector signals sensitive to delayed
decays of the lightest neutralino to photon plus goldstino and demonstrate the
potential for substantially increasing the portion of the general parameter
space of a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model that can be probed at

Pair Interaction Potentials of Colloids by Extrapolation of Confocal Microscopy Measurements of Collective Structure
A method for measuring the pair interaction potential between colloidal
particles by extrapolation measurement of collective structure to infinite
dilution is presented and explored using simulation and experiment. The method
is particularly well suited to systems in which the colloid is fluorescent and
refractive index matched with the solvent. The method involves characterizing
the potential of mean force between colloidal particles in suspension by
measurement of the radial distribution function using 3D direct visualization.
The potentials of mean force are extrapolated to infinite dilution to yield an
estimate of the pair interaction potential, . We use Monte Carlo (MC)
simulation to test and establish our methodology as well as to explore the
effects of polydispersity on the accuracy. We use poly-12-hydroxystearic
acid-stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PHSA-PMMA) particles dispersed in
the solvent dioctyl phthalate (DOP) to test the method and assess its accuracy
for three different repulsive systems for which the range has been manipulated
by addition of electrolyte.Comment: 35 pages, 14 figure
Magic Wavelengths for Terahertz Clock Transitions
Magic wavelengths for laser trapping of boson isotopes of alkaline-earth Sr,
Ca and Mg atoms are investigated while considering terahertz clock transitions
between the metastable triplet states. Our
calculation shows that magic wavelengths of trapping laser do exist. This
result is important because those metastable states have already been used to
realize accurate clocks in the terahertz frequency domain. Detailed discussions
for magic wavelength for terahertz clock transitions are given in this paper.Comment: 7 page
General Kerr-NUT-AdS Metrics in All Dimensions
The Kerr-AdS metric in dimension D has cohomogeneity [D/2]; the metric
components depend on the radial coordinate r and [D/2] latitude variables \mu_i
that are subject to the constraint \sum_i \mu_i^2=1. We find a coordinate
reparameterisation in which the \mu_i variables are replaced by [D/2]-1
unconstrained coordinates y_\alpha, and having the remarkable property that the
Kerr-AdS metric becomes diagonal in the coordinate differentials dy_\alpha. The
coordinates r and y_\alpha now appear in a very symmetrical way in the metric,
leading to an immediate generalisation in which we can introduce [D/2]-1 NUT
parameters. We find that (D-5)/2 are non-trivial in odd dimensions, whilst
(D-2)/2 are non-trivial in even dimensions. This gives the most general
Kerr-NUT-AdS metric in dimensions. We find that in all dimensions D\ge4
there exist discrete symmetries that involve inverting a rotation parameter
through the AdS radius. These symmetries imply that Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics with
over-rotating parameters are equivalent to under-rotating metrics. We also
consider the BPS limit of the Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics, and thereby obtain, in odd
dimensions and after Euclideanisation, new families of Einstein-Sasaki metrics.Comment: Latex, 24 pages, minor typos correcte
Knowledge and development : a cross-section approach
This paper assesses the effects of knowledge on economic growth. By using an array of indicators, each of which represents an aspect of knowledge, as independent variables in cross-section regressions that span 92 countries for the period 1960 to 2000, they show that knowledge is a significant determinant of long-term economic growth. In particular, the authors find that the stock of human capital, the level of domestic innovation and technological adaptation, and the level of information and communications technologies (ICT) infrastructure all exert statistically significant positive effects on long-term economic growth. More specifically with regard to the growth effects of the human capital stock, they find that an increase of 20 percent in the average years of schooling of a population tends to increase the average annual economic growth by 0.15 percentage point. In terms of innovation, the authors find that a 20 percent increase in the annual number of USPTO patents granted is associated with an increase of 3.8 percentage points in annual economic growth.
