    Effect of purple sweet potato leaf consumption on the modulation of the antioxidative status in basketball players during training. Asia

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of purple sweet potato leaves (PSPLs) consumption on antioxidative status and its modulation of that status in basketball players during training period. Fifteen elite basketball players were enrolled in this study. The seven-week study consisted of a run-in (week 1), PSPLs diet (daily consumption of 200 g PSPLs) (weeks 2, 3), washout (weeks 4, 5), and control diet (low polyphenol, with the amount of carotenoids adjusted to the same level as that of PSPLs) (weeks 6, 7). Blood and urine samples were taken for biochemical analysis. Compared with the control group, the results showed that PSPLs consumption led to a significant increase of plasma polyphenol concentration and vitamin E and C levels. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) lag time was significantly longer in the PSPLs group. A significant decrease of urinary 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was noted; however, there was no significant change in plasma glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant status (TAS) and malondialdehyde + 4-hydroxy-2(E)-nonenal level after consuming the PSPLs diet. In conclusion, consumption of PSPLs diet for 2 weeks may reduce lipid and DNA oxidation that can modulate the antioxidative status of basketball players during training period

    Consumers’ Perceptions About Pharmaceutical Care Provided by Community Pharmacists in China in Relation to Over-the-Counter Drugs: A Qualitative Study

    While patient-centered care is highly anticipated nowadays, investigation of consumers’ perceptions and expectations about pharmacist’s pharmaceutical care when providing over-the-counter (OTC) drugs is sparse. This article aimed to explore consumers’ perceptions regarding the pharmaceutical care that community pharmacists provide in relation to OTC drugs. Semistructured interviews were conducted with consumers recruited (N = 97) in Yinchuan City, China. The 4 main themes that emerged were expectations on pharmaceutical care, attitude toward pharmacist’s competence, experience of self-medication, and suggestions for improving pharmaceutical care. Most participants had high expectations on community pharmacists to recommend the right medicines, to advise them about the effective use of drug, to advise them about the safe use of drug, and to recommend economic drugs. However, their previous experiences at community pharmacy were far from satisfaction reportedly, leading to a general distrust in pharmacist’s certification and qualification, knowledge, communication skills, and attitude. As a result, the participants turned to self-medication based on their personal experiences, their relatives’ experiences, the information on drug label, and the information distributed in the mass media. Realizing the need to improve pharmaceutical care, the participants also made improvement suggestions specific to community pharmacist, community pharmacy, and the government

    The Influence of Aggressive Parenteral Nutrition to Preterm and Very Low Birth Weight Infants

    Background . To achieve the weight gain of preterm infants who are appropriate for gestational age without adverse effect, there should be no interruption in delivery of nutrients from time of birth. Methods . Twenty-eight very low birth weight infants were eligible for the study. Those administered conventional nutrition (amino acids 2 g/kg/day started on third day of life) were classified as the conventional support (CVS) group, and those administered aggressive early nutrition (amino acid 2 g/kg/day started on first day of life) were classified as the aggressive support (AGS) group. Results . The days babies took to reach the weight of 2000 g in the AGS group was significantly shorter than for babies in the CVS group, and babies in the AGS group showed better tolerance to enteral nutrition and had shortened neonatal intensive care unit days. Conclusion . The results demonstrated that aggressive early nutrition showed better tolerance to enteral nutrition, higher total calories, and shortened the stay in the neonatal intensive care unit

    Successful use of retrograde branched extension limb assembling technique in endovascular repair of pararenal abdominal aortic aneurysm

    Surgeon-modified retrograde branched extension limb assembling technique and bridged endografts were successfully used to exclude an asymptomatic pararenal abdominal aortic aneurysm and to reconstruct the superior mesenteric artery and bilateral renal arteries in a case with high-grade celiac artery stenosis, nondilated aorta above the superior mesenteric artery, and large lumen below the renal arteries. In patient-specific models for hemodynamics analysis, enhanced flow diversion to visceral arteries up to 6-month follow-up confirmed treatment feasibility; however, endograft configurations could be improved to avoid sharp corners at bifurcations, thereby ensuring smooth flow transport and possibly reducing risk for endograft narrowing or the development of thrombosis

    Ambient air pollution in relation to diabetes and glucose-homoeostasis markers in China: a cross-sectional study with findings from the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study

    Summary: Background: Health effects of air pollution on diabetes have been scarcely studied in developing countries. We aimed to explore the associations of long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants with diabetes prevalence and glucose-homoeostasis markers in China. Methods: Between April 1 and Dec 31, 2009, we recruited a total of 15 477 participants aged 18–74 years using a random number generator and a four-staged, stratified and cluster sampling strategy from a large cross-sectional study (the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study) from three cities in Liaoning province, northeastern China. Fasting and 2 h insulin and glucose concentrations and the homoeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index and β-cell function were used as glucose-homoeostasis markers. Diabetes was defined according to the American Diabetes Association's recommendations. We calculated exposure to air pollutants using data from monitoring stations (PM with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 μm or less [PM10], sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone) and a spatial statistical model (PM with an aerodynamic diameter of 1 μm or less [PM1] and 2·5 μm or less [PM2·5]). We used two-level logistic regression and linear regression analyses to assess associations between exposure and outcomes, controlling for confounders. Findings: All the studied pollutants were significantly associated with increased diabetes prevalence (eg, the adjusted odds ratios associated with an increase in IQR for PM1, PM2·5, and PM10 were 1·13, 95% CI 1·04–1·22; 1·14, 1·03–1·25; and 1·20, 1·12–1·28, respectively). These air pollutants were also associated with higher concentrations of fasting glucose (0·04–0·09 mmol/L), 2 h glucose (0·10–0·19 mmol/L), and 2 h insulin (0·70–2·74 μU/L). No association was observed for the remaining biomarkers. Stratified analyses indicated greater effects on the individuals who were younger (<50 years) or overweight or obese. Interpretation: Long-term exposure to air pollution was associated with increased risk of diabetes in a Chinese population, particularly in individuals who were younger or overweight or obese.     Phase 1 Study of the Selective c-MET Inhibitor, HS-10241, in Patients With Advanced Solid Tumors

    Introduction: c-MET is an important therapeutic target for various cancers; however, the People’s Republic of China currently retails only one specific c-MET inhibitor. Our preclinical study has revealed the high selectivity of HS-10241 to suppress c-MET. This phase 1 study aims to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and antitumor activity of the selective c-MET inhibitor (HS-10241) in patients with advanced solid tumors. Methods: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic solid tumors orally received a single or multiple dose of HS-10241 once daily or twice daily for 21 consecutive days, which included the following six regimens: 100 mg once daily, 200 mg once daily, 400 mg once daily, 600 mg once daily, 200 mg twice daily, and 300 mg twice daily. The treatment continued until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or treatment termination. The primary end point was the incidence of dose-limiting toxicity and maximal tolerated dose (MTD). Secondary end points included safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. Results: A total of 27 patients with advanced NSCLC received HS-10241, and dose-limiting toxicity was observed in three patients after 600 mg once-daily HS-10241 treatment. For once-daily dosing, MTD was 400 mg, and for twice-daily dosing, the maximal safe escalated dose was 300 mg, and MTD was not reached. Nausea (48.1%, 13 of 27), fatigue (37.0%, 10 of 27), and anemia (33.3%, 9 of 27) are the three most frequent treatment-emergent adverse events. At 400 mg once daily, Css,max was 5076 ng/mL and steady state area under the curve was 39,998 h × ng/mL. Patients (n = 5) with positive MET (MET exon 14-skipping, MET amplified, and MET immunohistochemistry 3+) had confirmed partial responses (n = 1) or stable disease (n = 3), with a disease control rate of 80.0%. Conclusions: The selective c-MET inhibitor HS-10241 was well tolerated and had clinical activity in advanced NSCLC, especially in patients with positive MET.     Features of CT and EUS in mesenteric plexiform neurofibroma with Neurofibromatosis type I: A case report

    Plexiform neurofibroma(PNF) is a rare benign tumor of the peripheral nerve, belonging to a subtype of neurofibroma. PNF is common in the head, neck and trunk. It is uncommonly observed in the mesentery. We report a case of mesenteric PNF in a 64-year-old man history of neurofibromatosis type I(NF1), which caused abdomen pain. In addition, the computer tomography(CT) and endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS) manifestations of mesenteric PNF were analyzed. The imaging appearance of a mesenteric plexiform neurofibroma is that many low-density (CT) /mixed echo (EUS) soft tissue masses surrounding the superior mesenteric artery, but not surrounding the superior mesenteric vein. Our case adds to the limited literature regarding NF1 presenting with mesenteric PNF. The computer tomography and endoscopic ultrasonography may facilitate confirma diagnosis of mesenteric PNF
