Slowly rotating black holes in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity
We investigate slowly rotating black holes in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz (HL)
gravity. For and , we find a slowly rotating black
hole of the Kehagias-Sfetsos solution in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We
discuss their thermodynamic properties by computing mass, temperature, angular

The absence of the Kerr black hole in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity
We show that the Kerr metric does not exist as a fully rotating black hole
solution to the modified Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity with

Extremal black holes in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity
We study the near-horizon geometry of extremal black holes in the
Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity with a flow parameter . For ,
near-horizon geometry of extremal black holes are AdS with
different radii, depending on the (modified) Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity. For

that the near-horizon geometry is ill-defined and the corresponding

Ethnic differences translate to inadequacy of high-risk screening for gestational diabetes mellitus in an Asian population: a cohort study
Background: universal and high-risk screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been widely studied and debated. Few studies have assessed GDM screening in Asian populations and even fewer have compared Asian ethnic groups in a single multi-ethnic population.Methods: 1136 pregnant women (56.7% Chinese, 25.5% Malay and 17.8% Indian) from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort study were screened for GDM by 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 26–28 weeks of gestation. GDM was defined using the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. High-risk screening is based on the guidelines of the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.Results: universal screening detected significantly more cases than high-risk screening [crude OR 2.2 (95% CI 1.7-2.8)], particularly for Chinese women [crude OR = 3.5 (95% CI 2.5-5.0)]. Pre-pregnancy BMI > 30 kg/m2 (adjusted OR = 3.4, 95% CI 1.5-7.9) and previous GDM history (adjusted OR = 6.6, 95% CI 1.2-37.3) were associated with increased risk of GDM in Malay women while GDM history was the only significant risk factor for GDM in Chinese women (adjusted OR = 4.7, 95% CI 2.0-11.0).Conclusion: risk factors used in high-risk screening do not sufficiently predict GDM risk and failed to detect half the GDM cases in Asian women. Asian women, particularly Chinese, should be screened to avoid under-diagnosis of GDM and thereby optimize maternal and fetal outcome
Caustic avoidance in Horava-Lifshitz gravity
There are at least four versions of Horava-Lishitz gravity in the literature.
We consider the version without the detailed balance condition with the
projectability condition and address one aspect of the theory: avoidance of
caustics for constant time hypersurfaces. We show that there is no caustic with
plane symmetry in the absence of matter source if \lambda\ne 1. If \lambda=1 is
a stable IR fixed point of the renormalization group flow then \lambda is
expected to deviate from 1 near would-be caustics, where the extrinsic
curvature increases and high-energy corrections become important. Therefore,
the absence of caustics with \lambda\ne 1 implies that caustics cannot form
with this symmetry in the absence of matter source. We argue that inclusion of
matter source will not change the conclusion. We also argue that caustics with
codimension higher than one will not form because of repulsive gravity
generated by nonlinear higher curvature terms. These arguments support our
conjecture that there is no caustic for constant time hypersurfaces. Finally,
we discuss implications to the recently proposed scenario of ``dark matter as

A 2-Component Generalization of the Camassa-Holm Equation and Its Solutions
An explicit reciprocal transformation between a 2-component generalization of
the Camassa-Holm equation, called the 2-CH system, and the first negative flow
of the AKNS hierarchy is established, this transformation enables one to obtain
solutions of the 2-CH system from those of the first negative flow of the AKNS
hierarchy. Interesting examples of peakon and multi-kink solutions of the 2-CH

Multiple-path Quantum Interference Effects in a Double-Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer
We investigate quantum interference effects in a double-Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer consisting of five quantum dots sandwiched between two metallic electrodes in the case of symmetric dot-electrode couplings by the use of the Green’s function equation of motion method. The analytical expression for the linear conductance at zero temperature is derived to interpret numerical results. A three-peak structure in the linear conductance spectrum may evolve into a double-peak structure, and two Fano dips (zero conductance points) may appear in the quantum system when the energy levels of quantum dots in arms are not aligned with one another. The AB oscillation for the magnetic flux threading the double-AB interferometer is also investigated in this paper. Our results show the period of AB oscillation can be converted from 2π to π by controlling the difference of the magnetic fluxes threading the two quantum rings

Hawking Radiation of Black Holes in Infrared Modified Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz Gravity
We study the Hawking radiation of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically
flat black holes in the infrared modified Horava-Lifshitz gravity by applying
the methods of covariant anomaly cancellation and effective action, as well as
the approach of Damour-Ruffini-Sannan's. These black holes behave as the usual
Schwarzschild ones of the general relativity when the radial distance is very
large. We also extend the method of covariant anomaly cancellation to derive
the Hawking temperature of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically AdS black

Micro-Hall Magnetometry Studies of Thermally Assisted and Pure Quantum Tunneling in Single Molecule Magnet Mn12-Acetate
We have studied the crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum
tunneling in single crystals of high spin (S=10) uniaxial single molecule
magnet Mn12-acetate using micro-Hall effect magnetometry. Magnetic hysteresis
experiments have been used toinvestigate the energy levels that determine the
magnetization reversal as a function of magnetic field and temperature. These
experiments demonstrate that the crossover occurs in a narrow (~0.1 K) or broad
(~1 K) temperature interval depending on the magnitude and direction of the
applied field. For low external fields applied parallel to the easy axis, the
energy levels that dominate the tunneling shift abruptly with temperature. In
the presence of a transverse field and/or large longitudinal field these energy
levels change with temperature more gradually. A comparison of our experimental
results with model calculations of this crossover suggest that there are
additional mechanisms that enhance the tunneling rate of low lying energy
levels and broaden the crossover for small transverse fields.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
