    The complete primary structure of abrin-a B chain

    AbstractThe complete 267 amino acid sequence of abrin-a B chain was determined by analysis of peptides obtained by digestion with trypsin, chymotrypsin, lysyl endopeptidase, Staphylacaccus aureus V8 protease and thermolysin. The sequence is not identical with that predicted previously by nucleotide sequencing, indicating the presence of isoforms of abrin. Comparison of the amino acid sequence of abrin-a B chain with that of ricin-D B chain reveals a high degree of sequence identity (59%). Abrin-a B chain appears to consist of two domains, each domain with subdomains (α, β, γ) of about 40 amino acid residues

    Ring Characteristics and Compressive Strength of Japanese Cedar Trees Grown Under Different Silvicultural Treatments

    The effects of different plantation spacings and thinning treatments on the ring characteristics, compressive strength, and dynamic modulus of elasticity (DMOE) of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) trees were investigated. The results revealed that young trees of more-closely spaced plantations (3000 trees/ha) had higher wood density and compressive strength than those of more-widely spaced plantations (2200 trees/ha). Different (first and second) thinning treatments of the 2 initial spacings had little effect on ring characteristics or compressive strength. Overall, the average ring characteristics, compressive strength, and DMOE of 35-yr-old Japanese cedar at different plantation spacings and thinning treatments showed no statistically significant differences. The results suggest that using these silvicultural treatments with a longer rotation age will have no detrimental effects on the wood density, compressive strength, or DMOE

    One-stage reconstruction of large lower lip defect and oral competence with free composite anterolateral thigh-tensor fasciae latae flap

    SummaryReconstruction for a large lower lip defect is a challenge to reconstructive surgeons. The most challenging problem is to maintain oral competence and prevent sialorrhea. We present three cases of such a defect reconstructed with composite anterolateral thigh-tensor fascia lata free flaps in one stage. The patients reported in this communication had advanced squamous cell carcinoma in the lower lip. A large lower lip defect (>90%) resulted in each case from wide excision of the tumor. A composite anterolateral thigh-tensor fasciae latae free flap was used to reconstruct the defect and to restore the dynamic oral competence in one stage. A tensor fasciae latae sling was attached by two strips sutured together to the upper orbicularis oris muscle in the first case. The four-strip method, a modification of the method described by Serkan,1 was adopted in the second case. The upper two strips bilaterally sutured to the orbicularis oris muscles in a mode somewhat different from Serkan’s method. The tensor fasciae latae sling was attached by two strips sutured to the periosteum of both zygomatic eminences in the third case. The tensor fasciae latae sling of Case 1 failed with persistent sialorrhea. The second case had good oral competence and comprehensible speech ability without sialorrhea. The third case had an acceptable result before he was lost to follow-up. A composite anterolateral thigh-tensor fasciae latae free flap is a good choice for a large lower lip defect to achieve oral competence reconstruction in one stage. Simultaneous dynamic and static suspensions are suggested to maintain oral competence and prevent sialorrhea

    Electroencephalography and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in neonatal citrullinemia

    The authors present a case of citrullinemia with a genotype of argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS1), c.380 G>A (p.R127Q)/c.380 G>A (p.R127Q), in two alleles. A 3-day-old female infant presented with status epilepticus and coma. Laboratory data showed hyperammonemia and marked lactic acidosis in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid; electroencephalography showed severely suppressed cerebral activity and focal paroxysmal volleys of slow and sharp waves (< 1Hz) over the left hemisphere. Real-time transcranial Doppler ultrasonography showed a brain edema and high peaked systolic and low diastolic flows in basal, anterior, and middle cerebral arteries; however, immediately after a blood exchange transfusion, systolic flows were lower and diastolic flows were higher. The resistance indices were significantly different (means: 0.58 vs. 0.37; p=0.01). The patient was placed on diet therapy. After six blood exchange transfusions and peritoneal dialysis, her neurologic examination results and serum ammonia and lactate values were normal. The authors found that electroencephalography and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography were useful for the diagnosis and follow-up treatment of neonatal citrullinemia

    In this report, we demonstrate that Ge-NWQD (nanowire quantum dots) at low temperatures exhibit apparent Coulomb oscillations than that in Si-NWQD. These oscillations gradually disappear as the temperature increases, indicating the influence of phonon scattering. The increase in Coulomb oscillations enables the device to exhibit multi-level characteristics at low voltage in quantum flash, and the lower barrier high and high mobility of Ge make it advantageous for increasing the storage capacity of quantum flash devices.     Differential Presentations of Arterial Thromboembolic Events Between Venous Thromboembolism and Atrial Fibrillation Patients

    Objective: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) share several risk factors related to arterial thromboembolism. No study has reported the differential contribution to arterial thromboembolic events and mortality between these two conditions in the same population. We therefore assessed the differential arterial thromboembolic events between AF and VTE. Methods: We included AF and VTE national cohorts derived from Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 2001 and 2013. The eligible population was 314,861 patients in the AF cohort and 41,102 patients in the VTE cohort. The primary outcome was arterial thromboembolic events, including ischemic stroke, extracranial arterial thromboembolism (ECATE) and myocardial infarction (MI). Secondary outcomes were all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death. Results: After a 1:1 propensity matching, 32,688 patients in either group were analyzed. The risk of arterial thromboembolic events was lower in the VTE cohort than that in the AF cohort (subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR], 0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.57–0.62). The risk of ischemic stroke (SHR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.42–0.46) and MI (SHR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.72–0.89) were lower in the VTE cohort, while the risk of ECATE (SHR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.14–1.33; particularly lower extremities) was higher in the VTE cohort. All-cause mortality rate was higher in the VTE cohort (HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.15–1.21) while the risk of cardiovascular death was lower in the VTE cohort (HR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.93–0.995). Conclusions: Patients with AF had higher risks of arterial thromboembolic events compared to patients with VTE, despite having risk factors in common. The VTE cohort had higher risks of all-cause mortality and ECATE, particularly lower extremity events, compared to AF patients. The differential manifestations of thromboembolism sequelae and mortality between AF and VTE patients merit further investigation

    Red Yeast Rice Protects Circulating Bone Marrow-Derived Proangiogenic Cells against High-Glucose-Induced Senescence and Oxidative Stress: The Role of Heme Oxygenase-1

    The inflammation and oxidative stress of bone marrow-derived proangiogenic cells (PACs), also named endothelial progenitor cells, triggered by hyperglycemia contributes significantly to vascular dysfunction. There is supporting evidence that the consumption of red yeast rice (RYR; Monascus purpureus-fermented rice) reduces the vascular complications of diabetes; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of RYR extract in PACs, focusing particularly on the role of a potent antioxidative enzyme, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). We found that treatment with RYR extract induced nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor nuclear translocation and HO-1 mRNA and protein levels in PACs. RYR extract inhibited high-glucose-induced (30 mM) PAC senescence and the development of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a dose-dependent manner. The HO-1 inducer cobalt protoporphyrin IX also decreased high-glucose-induced cell senescence and oxidative stress, whereas the HO-1 enzyme inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin IX and HO-1 small interfering RNA significantly reversed RYR extract-caused inhibition of senescence and reduction of oxidative stress in high-glucose-treated PACs. These results suggest that RYR extract serves as alternative and complementary medicine in the treatment of these diseases, by inducing HO-1, thereby decreasing the vascular complications of diabetes

    Projected Increase of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (Meiyu) in Taiwan by Climate Models With Variable Performance

    The active phase of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) in Taiwan during May and June, known as Meiyu, produces substantial precipitation for water uses in all sectors of society. Following a companion study that analysed the historical increase in the Meiyu precipitation, the present study conducted model evaluation and diagnosis based on the EASM lifecycle over Taiwan. Higher and lower skill groups were identified from 17 Couple Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models, with five models in each group. Despite the difference in model performance, both groups projected a substantial increase in the Meiyu precipitation over Taiwan. In the higher skill group, weak circulation changes and reduced low‐level convergence point to a synoptically unfavourable condition for precipitation. In the lower skill group, intensified low‐level southwesterly winds associated with a deepened upper level trough enhance moisture pooling. Thus, the projected increase in Meiyu precipitation will likely occur through the combined effects of (1) the extension of a strengthened North Pacific anticyclone enhancing southwesterlies; and (2) more systematically, the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship that increases precipitation intensity in a warmer climate. The overall increase in the Meiyu precipitation projected by climate models of variable performance supports the observed tendency toward more intense rainfall in Taiwan and puts its early June 2017 extreme precipitation events into perspective

    Manufacturing and performance evaluation of carbon nanotube-parylene sandwich thin films

    Parylene-C, an inert and relatively mechanically strong polymer, which can be deposited in a conformal manner, is a promising substrate candidate for flexible electronics (Flextronics) devices. Parylene-CNT sandwich-films were fabricated by utilizing single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) layers sandwiched between two, 10 μm thick parylene layers. The device was fabricated using shadow mask technology and SWNT drop casting on top of the Parylene substrate. The electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the samples were tested under tensile loading. The load-unload tests showed small change in electrical resistance (~1%) when applying a strain in the range 0 - 2%, with negligible hysterisis. The tensile test also showed ~32% increase in the elastic modulus (E) of the sandwich film, relative to pure parylene. Potential applications are in interconnects for flexible electronics devices, and strain sensors for biological systems
