On the Design of Secure and Fast Double Block Length Hash Functions
In this work the security of the rate-1 double block length hash functions, which based on a block cipher with a block length of n-bit and a key length of 2n-bit, is reconsidered.
Counter-examples and new attacks are presented on this general class of double block length hash functions with rate 1, which disclose uncovered flaws in the necessary conditions given by Satoh et al. and Hirose. Preimage and second preimage attacks are presented on Hirose's two examples which were left as an open problem. Therefore, although all the rate-1 hash functions in this general class are failed to be optimally (second) preimage resistant, the necessary conditions are refined for ensuring this general class of the rate-1 hash functions to be optimally secure against the collision attack. In particular, two typical examples, which designed under the refined conditions, are proven to be indifferentiable from the random oracle in the ideal cipher model. The security results are extended to a new class of double block length hash functions with rate 1, where one block cipher used in
the compression function has the key length is equal to the block length, while the other is doubled
Performance of Halbach magnetized brushless AC motors
The steady-state performance of Halbach magnetized brushless ac machines when operated in constant torque and flux-weakening modes is investigated both theoretically and experimentally, with particular emphasis on the influence of cross-coupling magnetic saturation on the torque capability
Microscale Magnetic Field Modulation for Enhanced Capture and Distribution of Rare Circulating Tumor Cells
Immunomagnetic assay combines the powers of the magnetic separation and biomarker recognition and has been an effective tool to perform rare Circulating Tumor Cells detection. Key factors associated with immunomagnetic assay include the capture rate, which indicates the sensitivity of the system, and distributions of target cells after capture, which impact the cell integrity and other biological properties that are critical to downstream analyses. Here we present a theoretical framework and technical approach to implement a microscale magnetic immunoassay through modulating local magnetic field towards enhanced capture and distribution of rare cancer cells. Through the design of a two-dimensional micromagnet array, we characterize the magnetic field generation and quantify the impact of the micromagnets on rare cell separation. Good agreement is achieved between the theory and experiments using a human colon cancer cell line (COLO205) as the capture targets
γ-Glutamyl carboxylase mutations differentially affect the biological function of vitamin K–dependent proteins
γ-Glutamyl carboxylase (GGCX) is an integral membrane protein that catalyzes posttranslational carboxylation of a number of vitamin K–dependent (VKD) proteins involved in a wide variety of physiologic processes, including blood coagulation, vascular calcification, and bone metabolism. Naturally occurring GGCX mutations are associated with multiple distinct clinical phenotypes. However, the genotype–phenotype correlation of GGCX remains elusive. Here, we systematically examined the effect of all naturally occurring GGCX mutations on the carboxylation of 3 structure–function distinct VKD proteins in a cellular environment. GGCX mutations were transiently introduced into GGCX-deficient human embryonic kidney 293 cells stably expressing chimeric coagulation factor, matrix Gla protein (MGP), or osteocalcin as VKD reporter proteins, and then the carboxylation efficiency of these reporter proteins was evaluated. Our results show that GGCX mutations differentially affect the carboxylation of these reporter proteins and the efficiency of using vitamin K as a cofactor. Carboxylation of these reporter proteins by a C-terminal truncation mutation (R704X) implies that GGCX’s C terminus plays a critical role in the binding of osteocalcin but not in the binding of coagulation factors and MGP. This has been confirmed by probing the protein–protein interaction between GGCX and its protein substrates in live cells using bimolecular fluorescence complementation and chemical cross-linking assays. Additionally, using a minigene splicing assay, we demonstrated that several GGCX missense mutations affect GGCX’s pre–messenger RNA splicing rather than altering the corresponding amino acid residues. Results from this study interpreted the correlation of GGCX’s genotype and its clinical phenotypes and clarified why vitamin K administration rectified bleeding disorders but not nonbleeding disorders
Evaluation of Metal-Active Gas Double-Sided Double-Power Arc Welded Joints of High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel
High-strength low-alloy steel 50 mm thick is well joined by metal-active gas double-sided doublepower arc welding, which does not require preheating, postheating, and back chipping. Mechanical properties of the weld seam and base metal were investigated. Results of the tensile test indicate that the strength of the weld seam is about 862.73 MPa and its average elongation is 20.74%. The hardness of the base metal and weld zone is 299 and 361 HV, respectively. The maximum hardness (395 HV) is observed in the heat-affected zone. The average toughness of the face and root sides of the weld center is 75 and 71 J, respectively.
Identification of a candidate gene for Rc-D1, a locus controlling red coleoptile colour in wheat
Red coleoptile is an easily observed agronomic trait of wheat and has been extensively studied. However, the molecular mechanism of this trait has not yet been revealed. In this study, the MYB gene TaMYB-D1 was isolated from the wheat cultivar ‘Gy115’, which possesses red coleoptiles. This gene resided at the short arm of the homoelogous group 7 chromosomes. TaMYB-D1 was the only gene expressed in the coleoptiles of ‘Gy115’ and was not expressed in ‘Opata’ and ‘CS’, which have uncoloured coleoptiles. Phylogenetic analysis placed TaMYB-D1 very close to ZmC1 and other MYB proteins regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. The encoded protein of TaMYB-D1 had an integrated DNA binding domain of 102 amino acids and a transcription domain with 42 amino acids, similar to the structure of ZmC1. Transient expression analysis in onion epidermal cells showed that TaMYB-D1 was located at the plant nucleus, which suggested its role as a transcription factor. The expression of TaMYB-D1 was accompanied with the expression of TaDFR and anthocyanin biosynthesis in the development of the coleoptile of ‘Gy115’. Transient expression analysis showed that only TaMYB-D1 induced a few ‘Opata’ coleoptile cells to synthesize anthocyanin in light, and the gene also induced a colour change to red in many cells with the help of ZmR. All of these results suggested TaMYB-D1 as the candidate gene for the red coleoptile trait of ‘Gy115’
Fabrication of monodisperse magnetic nanorods for improving hyperthermia efficacy
Background: Hyperthermia is one of the promising cancer treatment strategies enabled by local heating with the use of tumor-targeting magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) under a non-invasive magnetic field. However, one of the remaining challenges is how to achieve therapeutic levels of heat (without causing damages to regular tissues) in tumors that cannot be effectively treated with anti-tumor drug delivery. Results: In this work, we report a facile method to fabricate magnetic nanorods for hyperthermia by one-step wet chemistry synthesis using 3-Aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) as the shape-controlling agent and ferric and ferrous ions as precursors. By adjusting the concentration of APTMS, hydrothermal reaction time, ratios of ferric to ferrous ions, magnetic nanorods with aspect ratios ranging from 4.4 to 7.6 have been produced. At the clinically recommended field strength of 300 Oe (or less) and the frequency of 184 kHz, the specific absorption rate (SAR) of these nanorods is approximately 50 % higher than that of commercial Bionized NanoFerrite particles. Conclusions: This increase in SAR, especially at low field strengths, is crucial for treating deep tumors, such as pancreatic and rectal cancers, by avoiding the generation of harmful eddy current heating in normal tissues.[Figure not available: see fulltext.
Special biconformal changes of K\"ahler surface metrics
The term "special biconformal change" refers, basically, to the situation
where a given nontrivial real-holomorphic vector field on a complex manifold is
a gradient relative to two K\"ahler metrics, and, simultaneously, an
eigenvector of one of the metrics treated, with the aid of the other, as an
endomorphism of the tangent bundle. A special biconformal change is called
nontrivial if the two metrics are not each other's constant multiples. For
instance, according to a 1995 result of LeBrun, a nontrivial special
biconformal change exists for the conformally-Einstein K\"ahler metric on the
two-point blow-up of the complex projective plane, recently discovered by Chen,
LeBrun and Weber; the real-holomorphic vector field involved is the gradient of
its scalar curvature. The present paper establishes the existence of nontrivial
special biconformal changes for some canonical metrics on Del Pezzo surfaces,
viz. K\"ahler-Einstein metrics (when a nontrivial holomorphic vector field
exists), non-Einstein K\"ahler-Ricci solitons, and K\"ahler metrics admitting
nonconstant Killing potentials with geodesic gradients.Comment: 16 page
Preparation and ferroelectric properties of (124)-oriented SrBi4Ti4O15 ferroelectric thin film on (110)-oriented LaNiO3 electrode
A (124)-oriented SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBTi) ferroelectric thin film with high volume
fraction of {\alpha}SBTi(124)=97% was obtained using a metal organic
decomposition process on SiO2/Si substrate coated by (110)-oriented LaNiO3
(LNO) thin film. The remanent polarization and coercive field for
(124)-oriented SBTi film are 12.1 {\mu}C/cm2 and 74 kV/cm, respectively. No
evident fatigue of (124)-oriented SBTi thin film can be observed after
1{\times}10e9 switching cycles. Besides, the (124)-oriented SBTi film can be
uniformly polarized over large areas using a piezoelectric-mode atomic force
microscope. Considering that the annealing temperature was 650{\deg}C and the
thickness of each deposited layer was merely 30 nm, a long-range epitaxial
relationship between SBTi(124) and LNO(110) facets was proposed. The epitaxial
relationship was demonstrated based on the crystal structures of SBTi and LNO.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, published in Journal of Materials Science:
