Constructing Chinese Paremiology: A Glimpse of the Past Seventy Years

    Get PDF
The studies of Chinese proverbs entered a new stage since 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was founded, following the inceptive stage in the early 20th century when Chinese folklore studies began to take shape by introducing the Western theories and concepts. From 1949-2019, Chinese proverb studies have systemically developed into a research area through collection, categorization and analysis. In particular, the Grand Collection of Chinese Proverbs project in the late 20th century set an epochal mark in collecting proverbs in use, and in building academic discourses both at domestic and international levels. This essay surveys this history of seventy years in terms of collection and theoretical studies within the context of Chinese folk literature and folklore studies

A Network DEA Model with Super Efficiency and Undesirable Outputs: An Application to Bank Efficiency in China

    Get PDF
There are two typical subprocesses in bank production—deposit generation and loan generation. Aiming to open the black box of input-output production of banks and provide comprehensive and accurate assessment on the efficiency of each stage, this paper proposes a two-stage network model with bad outputs and supper efficiency (US-NSBM). Empirical comparisons show that the US-NSBM may be promising and practical for taking the nonperforming loans into account and being able to rank all samples. Applying it to measure the efficiency of Chinese commercial banks from 2008 to 2012, this paper explores the characteristics of overall and divisional efficiency, as well as the determinants of them. Some interesting results are discovered. The polarization of efficiency occurs in the bank level and deposit generation, yet does not in the loan generation. Five hypotheses work as expected in the bank level, but not all of them are supported in the stage level. Our results extend and complement some earlier empirical publications in the bank level

Developing an Older Adult Volunteer Program in a New York Chinese Community: An Evidence-Based Approach

    Get PDF
This study reports the results of a pilot volunteer project for older Chinese immigrants and documents benefits for both volunteers and caregiver recipients. Using a social marketing approach, the volunteer project was designed as a social model to promote better health among older Chinese immigrants in New York City. The packaging of this health promotion project as a volunteer program was based on a strengths perspective. In the program, 18 older Chinese immigrants were trained to provide support and referral to family caregivers of ill relatives in the Chinese community. At 6 months, outcomes were evaluated for both volunteers and caregivers. The older volunteers perceived benefits associated with volunteering, specifically, a greater sense of well-being and satisfaction with life. In addition, the majority of volunteers felt empowered by training and volunteering (100 %), felt the skills they learned improved communication with their own families (90 %), and reported physical and emotional health benefits (61 %). At the same time, caregivers reported stress reduction following volunteer support. Findings suggest that a volunteer program model may be an effective health promotion intervention for older Chinese immigrants

In vitro study on human cytomegalovirus affecting early pregnancy villous EVT's invasion function

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the most common pathogen in uterus during pregnancy, which may lead to some serious results such as miscarriage, stillbirth, cerebellar malformation, fetus developmental retardation, but its pathogenesis has not been fully explained. The hypofunction of extravillous cytotrophoblast (EVT) invasion is the essential pathologic base of some complications of pregnancy. c-erbB-2 is a kind of oncogene protein and closely linked with embryogenesis, tissue repair and regeneration. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) is one of the key enzymes which affect EVT migration and invasion function. The expression level changes of c-erbB-2, MMP-2 and MMP-9 can reflect the changes of EVT invasion function.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To explore the influence of HCMV on the invasion function of EVT, we tested the protein expression level changes of c-erbB-2, MMP-2 and MMP-9 in villous explant cultured in vitro infected by HCMV, with the use of immunohistochemistry SP method and western blot. We confirmed that HCMV can reproduce and spread in early pregnancy villus; c-erbB-2 protein mainly expressed in normal early pregnancy villous syncytiotrophoblast (ST) remote plasma membrane and EVT, especially remote EVT cell membrane in villous stem cell column, little expressed in ST proximal end cell membrane and interstitial cells; MMP-2 protein primarily expressed in early pregnancy villous EVT endochylema and rarely in villous trophoblast (VT), ST and interstitial cells; MMP-9 protein largely expressed in early pregnancy villous mesenchyme, EVT and VT endochylema. Compared with control group, the three kinds of protein expression level in early pregnancy villus of virus group significantly decreased (P < 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>HCMV can infect villus in vitro and cause the decrease of early pregnancy villous EVT's invasion function.</p

Based on the Integration of “Internet + Ideology and Politics”, the Practice of Online and Offline Mixed Teaching Mode of Modern Medical Courses in Traditional Chinese Medicine Majors

The purpose of this paper is to explore how to implement the online and offline mixed teaching mode in the modern medical courses of TCM specialty under the guidance of the concept of “Internet + ideological and political integration”, and to explore its practical experience and remarkable results. With the power of today’s Internet technology, we will organically integrate ideological and political education into the modern medicine course of traditional Chinese medicine, so as to effectively promote the overall cultivation of students’ comprehensive quality, and further enhance the attraction of the course and educational benefits

A Search for Spectral Galaxy Pairs of Overlapping Galaxies based on Fuzzy Recognition

The Spectral Galaxy Pairs (SGPs) are defined as the composite galaxy spectra which contain two independent redshift systems. These spectra are useful for studying dust properties of the foreground galaxies. In this paper, a total of 165 spectra of SGPs are mined out from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 9 (DR9) using the concept of membership degree from the fuzzy set theory particularly defined to be suitable for fuzzily identifying emission lines. The spectra and images of this sample are classified according to the membership degree and their image features, respectively. Many of these 2nd redshift systems are too small or too dim to select from the SDSS images alone, making the sample a potentially unique source of information on dust effects in low-luminosity or low-surface-brightness galaxies that are underrepresented in morphological pair samples. The dust extinction of the objects with high membership degree is also estimated by Balmer decrement. Additionally, analyses for a series of spectroscopic observations of one SGP from 165 systems indicate that a newly star-forming region of our Milky Way might occur.Comment: 16pages, 6figure
