GAIA: Delving into Gradient-based Attribution Abnormality for Out-of-distribution Detection

Detecting out-of-distribution (OOD) examples is crucial to guarantee the reliability and safety of deep neural networks in real-world settings. In this paper, we offer an innovative perspective on quantifying the disparities between in-distribution (ID) and OOD data -- analyzing the uncertainty that arises when models attempt to explain their predictive decisions. This perspective is motivated by our observation that gradient-based attribution methods encounter challenges in assigning feature importance to OOD data, thereby yielding divergent explanation patterns. Consequently, we investigate how attribution gradients lead to uncertain explanation outcomes and introduce two forms of abnormalities for OOD detection: the zero-deflation abnormality and the channel-wise average abnormality. We then propose GAIA, a simple and effective approach that incorporates Gradient Abnormality Inspection and Aggregation. The effectiveness of GAIA is validated on both commonly utilized (CIFAR) and large-scale (ImageNet-1k) benchmarks. Specifically, GAIA reduces the average FPR95 by 23.10% on CIFAR10 and by 45.41% on CIFAR100 compared to advanced post-hoc methods.Comment: Accepted by NeurIPS202

Objective. Whether optimal cardiovascular health metrics may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in secondary prevention is uncertain. The study was conducted to evaluate the influence of lifestyle changes on clinical outcomes among the subjects underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods. The study group consists of 17,099 consecutive PCI patients. We recorded data on subject lifestyle behavior changes after their procedure. Patients were categorized as ideal, intermediate, or poor CV health according to a modified Life’s Simple 7 score (on body mass, smoking, physical activity, diet, cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose). Multivariable COX regression was used to evaluate the association between CV health and revascularization event. We also tested the impact of cumulative cardiovascular health score on reoccurrence of cardiovascular event. Results. During a 3-year median follow-up, 1,583 revascularization events were identified. The observed revascularization rate was 8.0%, 9.3%, and 10.6% in the group of patients with optimal (a modified Life’s Simple 7 score of 11–14), average (score = 9 or 10), or inadequate (less or equal than 8) CV health, respectively. After multivariable analysis, the adjusted hazard ratios were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.73–0.94) and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.79–0.99) for patients with optimal and average lifestyle changes comparing with the inadequate tertile ( for trend = 0.003). In addition, each unit increase in above metrics was associated with a decrease risk of revascularization (HR, 0.96; 95% confidence interval, 0.93–0.98; ). Conclusion. Ideal CV health related to lower incidence of cardiovascular events, even after the percutaneous coronary intervention. Revascularization can be reduced by lifestyle changes. The cardiovascular health metrics could be extrapolated to secondary prevention and need for further validation

The Institute of Plasma Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences is developing the REBCO cable in conduit conductor (CICC) technology for applications in next-generation nuclear fusion devices. The aim is to develop a CICC comprised of six REBCO sub-cables to satisfy the requirements of operation with a current of around 40 kA and a peak field of up to 20 T. To qualify the performance of the sub-size REBCO cable to be used in the CICC, two 25-turn insert solenoids have been designed, manufactured and tested at a current exceeding 6 kA subjected in a background field supplied by a water-cooled resistive magnet. The insert solenoid, wound from a 11.5 m long REBCO CORC®^{®} cable, was designed to investigate its current carrying capacity under high field and electromagnetic (EM) load at 4.2 K. Tests were performed under a background magnetic field up to 18.5 T, resulting in a peak magnetic field on the innermost layer turns of around 21.1 T at an operating current of 6.3 kA. The effects of operation with cyclic EM loads were tested by repeated current ramps to around 95% of the critical current. Moreover, the V–I characteristics were measured at 77 K and the self-field, to check the effects from warm-up and cool-down (WUCD) cycles between room temperature and 77 K with liquid nitrogen. The results show no obvious degradation after dozens of high-current test cycles in background fields ranging from 10 T to 18.5 T. The insert solenoid demonstrates the stable operation of the REBCO sub-size cable for CICC with EM loads of about 90 kN m−1^{−1} and WUCD cycles between room temperature and 77 K. These promising results indicate the potential of this technology for further applicationsin particular, for full-size CICC for high-performance fusion magnets

Objective The aim of this study was to examine shifts in the composition of the bacterial population in the intestinal tracts (ITs) of weaning piglets by antibiotic treatment using high-throughput sequencing. Methods Sixty 28-d-old weaning piglets were randomly divided into two treatment groups. The Control group was treated with a basal diet without antibiotics. The Antibiotic group’s basal diet contained colistin sulfate at a concentration of 20 g per ton and bacitracin zinc at a concentration of 40 g per ton. All of the pigs were fed for 28 days. Then, three pigs were killed, and the luminal contents of the jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colon were collected for DNA extraction and high-throughput sequencing. Results The results showed that the average daily weight gain of the antibiotic group was significantly greater (p0.05), than the control group. A total of 812,607 valid reads were generated. Thirty-eight operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that were found in all of the samples were defined as core OTUs. Twenty-one phyla were identified, and approximately 90% of the classifiable sequences belonged to the phylum Firmicutes. Forty-two classes were identified. Of the 232 genera identified, nine genera were identified as the core gut microbiome because they existed in all of the tracts. The proportion of the nine core bacteria varied at the different tract sites. A heat map was used to understand how the numbers of the abundant genera shifted between the two treatment groups. Conclusion At different tract sites the relative abundance of gut microbiota was different. Antibiotics could cause shifts in the microorganism composition and affect the composition of gut microbiota in the different tracts of weaning piglets

Positioning of Tower Crane Trolley Based on D-S Evidence Theory and Kalman Filter

    No full text
Due to the complex structure of the tower crane and the signal noise, it is difficult to estimate and predict the real position signal, which may lead to inaccurate positioning of the tower crane trolley. A tower crane positioning algorithm based on D-S evidence theory and unscented Kalman filter (DS-UKF) is established and developed. First, the nonlinear dynamic model, state equation, and detection equation of the tower crane are constructed based on the complex structure of the tower crane. Second, the arm angle is estimated, and the distance between the trolley and the root of the arm is positioned. Finally, in order to calculate the weight of a single sensor, the D-S evidence theory is used to process the measurement information of the sensor and the estimated value of the filter. The Kalman filter, which has good signal tracking and estimation ability, is used to predict and estimate the position of the trolley. The accurate positioning of the tower crane trolley is realized through the organic fusion of information. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the DS-UKF positioning algorithm

Unraveling the atomistic structures of electric double layers (EDL) at electrified interfaces is of paramount importance for understanding the mechanisms of electrocatalytic reactions and rationally designing electrode materials with better performance. Despite numerous efforts dedicated in the past, a molecular level understanding of the EDL is still lacking. Combining the state-of-the-art ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and recently developed computational standard hydrogen electrode (cSHE) method, it is possible to realistically simulate the EDL under well-defined electrochemical conditions. In this work, we report extensive AIMD calculation of the electrified Pt(111)-Had/water interfaces at the saturation coverage of adsorbed hydrogen (Had) corresponding to the typical hydrogen evolution reaction conditions. We calculate the electrode potentials of a series of EDL models with various surface charge densities using the cSHE method and further obtain the Helmholtz capacitance that agrees with experiment. Furthermore, the AIMD simulations allow for detailed structural analyses of the electrified interfaces, such as the distribution of adsorbate Had and the structures of interface water and counterions, which can in turn explain the computed dielectric property of interface water. Our calculation provides valuable molecular insight into the electrified interfaces and a solid basis for understanding a variety of electrochemical processes occurring inside the EDL

Water and four small molecular alcohols are respectively used to activate corn cellulose (CN cellulose) with the aim to improve the dissolvability in DMAc/LiCl. Among all these activated agents, monohydric alcohols are found to produce the optimal effect of activation in the whole process including of activating, dissolving, and electrospinning of CN cellulose. Meanwhile, well distributed fibers with the diameter of 500 nm-2 mu m are fabricated in electrospinning. Understanding the activation effect of monohydric alcohols with water and polyhydric alcohols, the most effective activated agent is ascertained with the characteristics of small molecular size, low viscosity, and single functionality. This work is definitely initiated to understand the critical principle of CN cellulose in dissolving. Accordingly, a feasible methodology is also established to prepare ultrafine cellulose fibers with good morphology in electrospinning. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Synthesis of polyurethane containing carbon-carbon double bonds to prepare functionalizable ultrafine fibers via electrospinning

Polyurethanes (TPUs) containing carbon-carbon double bonds are synthesized for use as novel materials with the ability to form functionalizable ultrafine fibers via electrospinning. By adjusting the molecular structure, a series of TPU products with different amounts of carbon-carbon double bonds are obtained. After investigating the reactivity of the TPU with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctanethiol, all of the TPU samples exhibit effective functionalizability. The more carbon-carbon double bonds contained in the molecular structure, the stronger the functionalizability. Besides, these TPUs can easily form uniform ultrafine fibers via electrospinning. Upon comparison, the functionalizability of the electrospun fibers is similar to that observed in the bulk TPU materials. This work suggests a feasible methodology to produce a functionalized ultrafine fibrous carrier. Accordingly, TPU containing carbon-carbon double bonds is expected to be exploited as a fibrous carrier of solid catalysts in the future

A novel controllable capacitor commutation based superconducting hybrid direct current breaker

    No full text
Abstract Featuring low power loss and high reliability, voltage source converter medium voltage direct current (VSC-MVDC) systems have been widely employed for grid-tied renewable energy applications. To maintain high operational safety, circuit breakers are needed to isolate faulted powerlines by comprehensively considering response speed and installation cost. Research efforts have been put to realizing DC fault isolation by coordinating resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (R-SFCL) and integrated-gate-commutated-thyristor (IGCT) based hybrid DC circuit breaker. In this paper, a controllable current commutation based superconducting DC circuit breaker (CCCB-SDCCB) is proposed. By integrating R-SFCL with IGCT based hybrid DC circuit breakers, the current interrupting capacity can be greatly enlarged with the advantage of low cost and fast speed, and hence the overall cost for suppress large fault currents can be greatly reduced for MVDC systems. In addition, a new current injection circuit branch using H-bridge structure is designed to recycle the residual capacitor voltage from the previous fault stage to trigger the IGCTs without the capacitor pre-charging process. Simulation results show that the fault current can be successfully suppressed from 24.2 to 2.1 kA and fully interrupted within 4.11 ms by the proposed CCCB-SDCCB

Hydrolysis behavior of regenerated celluloses with different degree of polymerization under microwave radiation

    No full text
This work studied the hydrolysis behavior of regenerated celluloses (RCs) with different degree of polymerization (DP) by using the catalyst of dilute acid under microwave radiation. Results showed that the DP had a considerable influence on hydrolysis of cellulose. The reactivity of RCs was significantly improved when DP was lower than 51. The highest sugar yield of 59.2% was achieved from RC with lowest DP of 23 at 160 degrees C for 15 min. But the lowest yield of 32.6% was obtained when RC with highest DP of 132 was used. Recrystallization of cellulose was found to hinder the further hydrolysis particularly with the high DP. The effect of recrystallization can be reduced by the decrease of DP of RCs. This research demonstrates that the DP of RCs plays a crucial role on hydrolysis and it provides a preliminary guide based on DP to find a suitable pretreatment method for cellulose hydrolysis.
