Incipient ferralization and weathering indices along a soil chronosequence in Taiwan
The low hilly topography of Green Island, a volcanic island off southeastern Taiwan, includes an altitudinal sequence of sub-horizontal benches. We examined eight profiles along this sequence, ranging from pale brown loamy coral sand on the lowest bench that fringes the coast at an elevation of about 10 m to deep, intensely red and acid clay on the highest bench at about 240 m. Chemical analyses, differential Fe extractions, thin sections, X-ray diffraction of the clay minerals and indices of pedochemical weathering and strain indicated that soil development progressed by weathering of primary and secondary phyllosilicates through argilluviation in the intermediate stages to the generation of increasing quantities of free Fe. The Fe accumulates as free sesquioxides, which crystallize with age. Taxonomically the soil types progress from sandy coral Arenosol, through Eutric Cambisol, Hypereutric Lixisol and Acrisol to incipient Ferralsol (Udipsamment → Eutrudept → Udalf → Udultisol → Udox in Soil Taxonomy). The profiles are interpreted as a chronosequence, although this is complicated by minor and upwardly diminishing contributions of reef coral to the mainly igneous parent materials. There are also variations in the andesitic-basaltic bedrock, and minor aeolian inputs in the higher and older soil types. Regional eustatic sea-level correlations, 14C dating of carbonates on the two lowest benches and estimates of local tectonic uplift indicate that the incipient Ferralsols on the upper bench might date from about 150 ka. The transition through argilluvial Acrisols to incipient sesquioxide-dominated Ferralsols appears, therefore, to develop within 100–200 ka on Green Island, which is faster than usual
Ozone production efficiencies of acetone and peroxides in the upper troposphere
HOx concentrations in the upper tropical troposphere can be enhanced by the presence of acetone and the convective injection of peroxides. These enhancements in HOx might be expected to increase ozone production by increasing the rate of the HO2+NO reaction. We show however that the convective enhancements of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and methyl hydroperoxide (CH3OOH) above steady state during the PEM West B campaign were largely restricted to air parcels of marine boundary layer origin in which the mean NO concentration was 8 pptv. The ozone production efficiencies of the two peroxides at such low NO concentrations are very small. Their impact on the ozone budget of the upper tropical troposphere during PEM West B was therefore probably modest. Unlike the peroxides, acetone in the upper tropical troposphere during PEM West B exhibited a positive correlation with NO. It also has a much larger ozone production efficiency than either H2O2 or CH3OOH. It therefore has a much greater potential for significantly increasing ozone production rates in the upper tropical troposphere
Large collective Lamb shift of two distant superconducting artificial atoms
Virtual photons can mediate interaction between atoms, resulting in an energy
shift known as a collective Lamb shift. Observing the collective Lamb shift is
challenging, since it can be obscured by radiative decay and direct atom-atom
interactions. Here, we place two superconducting qubits in a transmission line
terminated by a mirror, which suppresses decay. We measure a collective Lamb
shift reaching 0.8% of the qubit transition frequency and exceeding the
transition linewidth. We also show that the qubits can interact via the
transmission line even if one of them does not decay into it.Comment: 7+5 pages, 4+2 figure

Display of a Maize cDNA library on baculovirus infected insect cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Maize is a good model system for cereal crop genetics and development because of its rich genetic heritage and well-characterized morphology. The sequencing of its genome is well advanced, and new technologies for efficient proteomic analysis are needed. Baculovirus expression systems have been used for the last twenty years to express in insect cells a wide variety of eukaryotic proteins that require complex folding or extensive posttranslational modification. More recently, baculovirus display technologies based on the expression of foreign sequences on the surface of <it>Autographa californica </it>(AcMNPV) have been developed. We investigated the potential of a display methodology for a cDNA library of maize young seedlings.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We constructed a full-length cDNA library of young maize etiolated seedlings in the transfer vector pAcTMVSVG. The library contained a total of 2.5 × 10<sup>5 </sup>independent clones. Expression of two known maize proteins, calreticulin and auxin binding protein (ABP1), was shown by western blot analysis of protein extracts from insect cells infected with the cDNA library. Display of the two proteins in infected insect cells was shown by selective biopanning using magnetic cell sorting and demonstrated proof of concept that the baculovirus maize cDNA display library could be used to identify and isolate proteins.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The maize cDNA library constructed in this study relies on the novel technology of baculovirus display and is unique in currently published cDNA libraries.</p> <p>Produced to demonstrate proof of principle, it opens the way for the development of a eukaryotic <it>in vivo </it>display tool which would be ideally suited for rapid screening of the maize proteome for binding partners, such as proteins involved in hormone regulation or defence.</p
Spin Gap in a Doped Kondo Chain
We show that the Kondo chain away from half-filling has a spin gap upon the
introduction of an additional direct Heisenberg coupling between localized
spins. This is understood in the weak-Kondo-coupling limit of the
Heisenberg-Kondo lattice model by bosonization and in the strong-coupling limit
by a mapping to a modified t-J model. Only for certain ranges of filling and
Heisenberg coupling does the spin gap phase extend from weak to strong

Ambipolar Field Effect in Topological Insulator Nanoplates of (BixSb1-x)2Te3
Topological insulators represent a new state of quantum matter attractive to
both fundamental physics and technological applications such as spintronics and
quantum information processing. In a topological insulator, the bulk energy gap
is traversed by spin-momentum locked surface states forming an odd number of
surface bands that possesses unique electronic properties. However, transport
measurements have often been dominated by residual bulk carriers from crystal
defects or environmental doping which mask the topological surface
contribution. Here we demonstrate (BixSb1-x)2Te3 as a tunable topological
insulator system to manipulate bulk conductivity by varying the Bi/Sb
composition ratio. (BixSb1-x)2Te3 ternary compounds are confirmed as
topological insulators for the entire composition range by angle resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and ab initio calculations.
Additionally, we observe a clear ambipolar gating effect similar to that
observed in graphene using nanoplates of (BixSb1-x)2Te3 in
field-effect-transistor (FET) devices. The manipulation of carrier type and
concentration in topological insulator nanostructures demonstrated in this
study paves the way for implementation of topological insulators in
nanoelectronics and spintronics.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Investigations of Pairing in Anyon Systems
We investigate pairing instabilities in the Fermi-liquid-like state of a
single species of anyons. We describe the anyons as Fermions interacting with a
Chern-Simons gauge field and consider the weak coupling limit where their
statistics approaches that of Fermions. We show that, within the conventional
BCS approach, due to induced repulsive Coulomb and current-current
interactions, the attractive Aharonov-Bohm interaction is not sufficient to
