    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose a training kit for developing a system to assist basic electrical control courses to the undergraduate students of Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. We present magnetic levitation hardware demonstrating a load hanging in the air with the help of electromagnetic coil. The students are provided with unassembled training kit project where they will use it to achieve several learning outcome. Technical data of the system is given along with a basic instruction manual as benchmark for the training kit. The magnetic levitation kits provide an open-ended design problem such as designing a sensor, load, closed loop feedback system and a lot more. The training kit is alter made to provide exciting and excellent teaching tools for controls system subject unlike the conventional trainer module

Shunt capacitor bank in power transmission are essential in providing reactive power support and improvement of voltage profile at any required point within the grid system. The failure of shunt capacitor bank due to unbalance capacitance caused reactive power and voltage losses to the power transmission network. The time taken to identify the location of capacitance failure require a lot of time due to no physical indication failure in shunt capacitor bank. This paper is focused on investigating the fault location in shunt capacitor bank in high voltage system mainly at power system transmission through compensated neutral current method. The investigation is focused on the internal failure of capacitor unit in shunt capacitor bank which caused by capacitance element failure. The configuration of shunt capacitor bank applied in this research used the common type of configuration which is ungrounded double wye connection and internally fused type of capacitor unit. This type of shunt capacitor bank configuration will affect the development of mathematical modelling as the algorithm for identifying the location and number of element failure in shunt capacitor bank. The investigation is done by developing the mathematical modelling and simulation through MATLAB software for neutral current at the neutral point of shunt capacitor bank. The output results of neutral current are used to determine and identify the location and number of element failure in shunt capacitor bank. Through neutral current result, the angle of neutral current is compared with corresponding or equivalent phase current to determine the faulty section thus determine the location of element failure in shunt capacitor bank. The ratio between neutral current and equivalent phase current will determine the number and type of element failure occurred in a section of shunt capacitor bank. The comprehensive analysis was done to determine the relationship between number and type of element failure to the number and type of faulty capacitor unit in shunt capacitor bank

Comparative Study Of Current Control Strategy For DC Motors

    No full text
A brushed DC motorist well-known to provide simple control and superior torque dynamic performance. This is mainly due to the fact that the electromagnetic torque can be directly controlled by regulating the armature current using full bridge DC-DC converter. Note that the developed torque is proportionally to the armature current and the use of full bridge converter permits the motor performs into 4-quadrant operation. This paper will present a comparative study of current/torque performances for three different current control strategies which are as follows; 1) hysteresis-based with bipolar switching technique, 2) carrier-based with bipolar switching technique and 3) carrier-based with unipolar switching technique. The comparison performances of the switching techniques will be analyzed through experimental results

The objective of this study is to understand and examine the Engineering Technology (ET) students’ perceptions of their learning experiences or strategies in studying the mathematics subject at the Faculty of Engineering Technology (FTK), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). In the study, a mini survey method, with quantitative research methods, was utilized. A total of 260 first year ET students at FTK, UTeM were asked to complete a set of questionnaires administrated during the final week of semester one and 2013/2014 session. Two parts of questions on the students’ perceptions about learning experiences or strategies in studying the mathematics subject were asked in this survey, which are Part A on the application of active learning strategies, and Part B on the application of passive learning strategies, by the mathematics lecturers during the teaching and learning processes. From the findings, conclusion has been drawn regarding the strategies and methods used by the lecturers in teaching mathematics from the students’ perceptions about their learning experiences. The result shows that most of the mathematics lecturers have applied both the active and passive learning strategies in the processes of teaching and learning as far as the mathematics subject is concerned

Improved Performance Of DTC Of Five-Phase Induction Machines

    No full text
The paper describes about optimal voltage vector selection for high-performance of Direct Torque Control (DTC) of five-phase induction machine. The de-coupled control of stator flux and electromagnetic torque based on hysteresis controllers as employed in conventional DTC is applied to retain the simplicity and to provide quick instantaneous control. A look-up table that selects the most optimal voltage vectors according to the speed operations, i.e. low-speed, middle-speed and high-speed is proposed to improve DTC performances such as excellent torque dynamic control, minimization of torque ripple, high-efficiency (due to lower switching frequency) and extension of constant torque region. All the improvements are validated through simulation results
