Preliminary studies of surface water quality in Damodar River basin (West Bengal, India)
The purpose of the research was to study the main parameters of the chemical composition of surface water and its quality in the Damodar River basin near the Durgapur city where the surface water is used for water supply of the local community. During fieldwork water of the Damodar River, its tributaries (Tamla River and small streams - receivers of industrial wastewater and drainage water) and the Maithon Reservoir was sampled from the layer 0.1-0.5 m. Preliminary studies have shown that the main pollutants in the study area are organic compounds, ammonium, phosphate and fluoride ions. Deterioration of water quality in some sampling points is connected with a low content of dissolved oxygen and high concentrations of nitrite, chloride and sulfate ions

The idea of metamorphosis in some English Renaissance writers
This thesis explores the use made by Lyly, Spenser, Chapman and Marston of the idea of metamorphosis, with a brief epilogue on Jonson. The two preliminary chapters define certain important contexts for the theme of metamorphosis in this period. Chapter I briefly considers Ovid's use of the theme, the Pythagorean and Platonic theory of transmigration, and the allegorization of metamorphosis. Medieval commentaries on the Metamorphoses are examined, but it is argued that Renaissance attitudes to Ovid and to metamorphosis are significantly different, being uniquely sensitive to both the poetic and metaphysical aspects. Renaissance responses to Apuleius' Golden Ass are also examined. Chapter II studies other Renaissance contexts: in the philosophy of man, in magic, witchcraft and alchemy, and in the love-poetry of Petrarch and Ronsard. Neither Elizabethan lyric poetry nor the epyllion, however, make suggestive use of theltheme: it is explored more fully in larger structures or different poetic modes. The next four chapters deal with the English writers. Lyly's plays use the theme of metamorphosis in two contexts: love, and the adulatory myths of the court. Chapter IV considers the complex and varied uses of metamorphosis in Spenser's Faerie Queene. It examines the treatment of of myth, the concepts behind the Garden of Adonis, and transformation as related to the theme of mutability. Chapter V examines the idea of form, set against deformity or transformation, in Chapman's poetry: especially The Shadow of Night and Hero and Leander. Here the basic philosophic or metaphysical assumptions behind Renaissance views-of the myth of metamorphosis are defined. Chapter VI deals with the satiric use of transformation by Marston. His Metamorphosis of Pigmalions Image is analysed as parodying the common image of metamorphosis as an effect of love. The satires present a negative image of transformation caused by man's guilt and folly. The Epilogue, dealing with the negative image of transformation in Jonson's. plays and the positive one in the masques, concludes the study while suggesting further directions for exploration.</p

Nishchindipur: The Impossibility of a Village Utopia
This article seeks to examine the persistence, in Indian and specifically Bengali literature of the twentieth century, of a contradiction: the myth of an ideal or utopian village set against actual experiences of suffering, inequality, and deprivation. It traces some elements of this contradiction to Thomas More’s foundational text, 'Utopia' (1516), and continues by examining the idealization of the self-sufficient and unchanging Indian village community in the social thought of the nineteenth-century British jurist Sir Henry Maine. Subsequently, the village becomes a focal concern for Indian nationalists, producing a strain of idealized ‘pastoralism’ as well as utopian dreams, countered by equally important critiques of rural obscurantism and decay. Both idealization and critique find their place in the literature and art of early twentieth century Bengal, but the category of the village Utopia proves impossible to sustain. The title of the article gestures towards this failure by citing the name (Nishchindipur, meaning ‘place of contentment’) of the village setting for Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s Bengali novel 'Pather Panchali' (1928), made into an iconic film (1955) by the director Satyajit Ray. The film generated a curious conjunction of the epithets ‘idyllic’ and ‘impoverished’, and was criticized for its unsparing depiction of rural suffering
Reconsidering English Studies in Indian Higher Education
This book examines the status of English Studies in India, aspirations pinned on the subject by students, teachers, policy-makers and society in general, and how these are addressed at the higher education level. It presents analytical background discussions of the history and policy environment, and offers open-ended, multi-faceted and multi-vocal accounts of particular aspects of contemporary Indian English Studies, including curriculum, pedagogy, research, employment, relation to Indian vernaculars and translation studies. Reconsidering English Studies in Indian Higher Education is an invaluable source for anyone interested in:
•The relevant histories and higher education policies
•Professional concerns, including employment, management, teaching and scholarly practices, and negotiations in terms of socio-cultural life
•Student attitudes, experiences and aspirations
•Management ethos and academic work in a comparative perspective, informed by the situation and debates in the United Kingdom and United States of America
•The context of global English Studies and globalizatio
Spectroscopy of low lying transitions of He confined in a fullerene cage
Using time dependent coupled Hartree-Fock(TDCHF) theory, we estimate structural properties such as total energy, ionisation potential, static and dynamic polarizabilities, oscillator strengths and transition probabilities for the first three dipolar excitations 1s2:1Se → 1snp:1Po (n = 2,3,4) and quadrupolar excitations 1s2:1Se → 1snd:1De (n = 3,4,5) of a helium atom placed at the centre of a fullerene cage. We estimate these structural properties using the fullerene cage potential based on experimental findings, including both neutral and charged fullerene potentials. Systematics have been observed with respect to the nature of the charge on fullerene compared to neutral species. We highlight interesting behavior of the excited state wavefunctions for the central atom, leading to altered behavioral patterns of the relevant properties
Atomic structure under external confinement: effect of plasma on the spin orbit splitting, relativistic mass correction and Darwin term for hydrogen-like ions
The effect of Debye and quantum plasma environment on the structural properties such as spin orbit splitting, relativistic mass correction and Darwin term for a few iso-electronic members of hydrogen viz. C5 +, O7 +, Ne9 +, Mg11 +, Si13 +, S15 +, Ar17 +, Ca19 + and Ti21 + has been analysed systematically for the first time for a range of coupling strengths of the plasma. The Debye plasma environment has been treated under a standard screened Coulomb potential (SCP) while the quantum plasma has been treated under an exponential cosine screened Coulomb potential (ECSCP). Estimation of the spin orbit splitting under SCP and ECSCP plasma is restricted to the lowest two dipole allowed states while for the other two properties, the ground state as well as the first two excited states have been chosen. Calculations have been extended to nuclear charges for which appreciable relativistic corrections are noted. In all cases calculations have been extended up to such screening parameters for which the respective excitation energies tend towards their stability limit determined by the ionisation potential at that screening parameter. Interesting behavior of the respective properties with respect to the plasma coupling strength has been noted
Zns Nanowire Arrays: Synthesis, Optical And Field Emission Properties
Nanowire arrays of cubic zinc sulfide are synthesized on zinc foil by a simple thermal evaporation route at relatively low temperature (\u3c500 °C). A self-catalytic liquid-solid growth is proposed for the formation of the nanowires. Influence of the synthesis temperatures on the morphological features of the ZnS nanowires is studied. Growth sequence of the nanowires with synthesis time is also studied through scanning electron microscopy. These nanowires grow along the [111] direction and remain perpendicular to the surface of the Zn substrate. Room temperature photoluminescence measurement exhibit UV and blue emission peaks at around 350 and 397 nm, respectively. These ZnS nanowires exhibited good field emission properties similar to those of conventional field emitters. © 2008 American Chemical Society
