    Development of guidelines for using office simulation to teach office practice in the Vietnamese public high schools

    The Vietnamese secondary school system is experimenting with the comprehensive concept. The office of education program, one of the first fields included in the process, is at its initial stage of development in Vietnam. A reference guide for a realistic teaching technique is needed to help develop a different approach for the program. Statement of the Problem: The problem studied was to prepare a set of guidelines for using office simulation to teach office practice in the Vietnamese comprehensive high schools. Purposes of the Study: The main purposes of this study were to: (1) introduce a different and realistic approach in the teaching and learning situation for the office practice course in Vietnam; and (2) Provide a general reference guide for an office simulation approach in teaching office practice in Vietnamese public high schools. Methods and Procedures: Research studies and reports, as well as professional writings pertaining to simulation approach in office education and other fields, were reviewed, analyzed and synthesized. The period covered was from 1962 to 1971. The preliminary review revealed the six major areas that were necessary in building guidelines for the Vietnamese business educators and School administrators who have not used the simulation technique. The later selection of data was made based on these six identified areas: The objectives of the office practice course. The simulation technique and its contribution to the office practice course. The criteria for designing an educational simulation model. The organization of the simulated environment. The operation of office simulation. The teacher\u27s role in the simulation program. Telephone interviews were made with the former business education advisor in Thu Due Demonstration High School to acquire a general outlook into the present status of the office practice course in Vietnam. Findings: The findings of this study were presented as a set of general guidelines. These guide lines were based on the theoretical and practical principles and opinions on instructional simulation, in office education and other fields, as experimented researched and expressed in the United States. They were organized into four areas: Design guidelines included the following steps: a. Establishment of objectives b. System analysis c. Data collection d. Establishment of model framework e. Manual and script writing f. Model tryout g. Student evaluation procedure h. Model redesign Administrative guidelines concerned: a. Administrative supports b. Course prerequisites and planning c. Curriculum planning d. Equipment and furniture e. Class sizes f. Employee’s manuals g. Business supplies and forms h. Classroom layout Operational guidelines concerned: a. Pretests b. Simulation orientation c. Intensive training d. Employment interview and role assignment e. Simulation warmup f. Full-scale simulation g. Debriefing sessions h. Post-simulation debriefing i. Post-tests Teacher education guidelines involved: a. Teacher\u27s attitude b. Teacher\u27s role c. Working competency d. Professional responsibility Main Recommendations: As the result of the study, it was recommended that: A field experiment be conducted to test the workability of the guidelines with the Vietnamese business educators. Business teacher education in the Vietnamese educational institutions include the training to use, design, and modify existing simulation games. Commercial simulation packages used in other educational systems be made available to the Vietnamese teachers. Research and evaluation be done in view of the use of mobile office education units in Vietnam. Workshops or practicum be organized to introduce the simulation technique to business education teachers and school administrators

    VIETNAMESE STUDENT RESEARCHERS’ EXPECTATIONS OF THEIR SUPERVISOR AND SUPERVISION PROCESS

    In Vietnam, scientific research is no longer just the work of scientists, graduate students, scholars, or lecturers; tertiary students are also encouraged to conduct scientific research. Therefore, the scientific research work of students receives more attention from educators. The research on carrying out scientific research of students is also therefore increasing. However, researchers do not seem to have paid enough attention to the role of supervisors during the supervision process. The evidence is that there are few studies on supervisors in Vietnam. Therefore, this study was conducted to learn about the role of supervisors from the student's perspective and expectations. Specifically, this study was conducted quantitatively with the use of a questionnaire consisting of 49 questions with a 5-point Likert scale. A total of 100 English-major students at a university in Southwest Vietnam participated in this study by answering the questionnaire. The results from the questionnaire show that students had high expectations from their supervisors. Specifically, students expect their supervisor to be someone who respects their opinions, has good scientific research knowledge, can give constructive comments, and is always willing to help them when needed. Based on research findings, supervisors are encouraged to participate in professional development training related to scientific research to improve their research knowledge and skills. Along with that, supervisors need to be aware of their role during the process of guiding students to do scientific research.  Article visualizations

    Pomelo is a Vietnam’s plant species with high nutritional and economic value. Besides, pomelo essential oil contains numerous compounds with high biological activity. The essential oil is extracted by using steam distillation, and its chemical composition is determined by means of GC-MS. The major components are limonene (91.19%), b-myrcene (2.92%), a-phellandrene (1.98%), and a-pinene (1.19%). The antimicrobial activity of essential oils is tested against pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), and Aspergillus flavus at different concentrations with the agar well diffusion method. This essential oil is active against B. cereus, S. aureus, and E. coli with inhibition diameter zones at 8.3–11.3, 10.3–18.7, and 9.0–11.7 mm, respectively, and inhibits A. flavus mold with 18.9–65.0% efficiency.Bưởi là loài cây không chỉ có giá trị cao về mặt dinh dưỡng mà còn có giá trị cao về mặt kinh tế và được trồng phổ biến ở Việt Nam. Ngoài ra, tinh dầu bưởi chứa nhiều hợp chất có hoạt tính sinh học cao. Tinh dầu bưởi được chiết xuất bằng phương pháp chưng cất lôi cuốn hơi nước và thành phần hóa học được phân tích bằng phương pháp GC-MS. Thành phần chính của tinh dầu gồm limonene (91,19%), b-myrcene (2,92%), a-phellandrene (1,98%) và a-pinene (1,19%). Hoạt tính kháng vi sinh vật của tinh dầu được khảo sát với vi khuẩn Gram dương (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus), Gram âm (Escherichia coli) và nấm mốc Aspergillus flavus ở nồng độ 5, 10, 25 và 50% bằng phương pháp khuếch tán giếng thạch. Tinh dầu có khả năng kháng B. cereus, S. aureus và E. coli với đường kính vòng kháng khuẩn lần lượt là 8,3–11,3, 10,3–18,7 và 9,0–11,7 mm và ức chế sự phát triển của A. flavus (18,9–65,0%)

    Cider Production from King Mandarin (Citrus nobilis Lour.) and Its Antioxidant Activity

    With the necessity of diversifying alcoholic beverages, cider has become a kind of drink that can fulfill this demand. This is because the cider will be diversified depending on the kinds of fruit that are chosen to be used for the cider fermentation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of dilution ratio, Brix, pH, and yeast concentration on the production of cider from king mandarin (Citrus nobilis Lour.), and to evaluate the analytical characteristics and antioxidant activity of the product. After the investigation, it can be claimed that the dilution of the juice causes the ethanol content to decrease, whereas the increase of Brix, pH, and yeast concentration makes the ethanol content increase. However, the proportional increase in the ethanol content with Brix, pH, and yeast concentration has its limitations. Specifically, when the Brix and the yeast concentrations were, respectively, higher than 16°Brix and 0.04%, the ethanol content tended to maintain the same. This is also the same when the pH was lower than 4.5. In addition, by using the DPPH and ABTS●+ methods, the antioxidant activity of cider is estimated to be lower than the one of the juice before fermentation, which is smaller than 3.78 times for the DPPH method and 3.76 times for the ABTS●+ method

    HIV-Associated TB in An Giang Province, Vietnam, 2001–2004: Epidemiology and TB Treatment Outcomes

    BACKGROUND: Mortality is high in HIV-infected TB patients, but few studies from Southeast Asia have documented the benefits of interventions, such as co-trimoxazole (CTX), in reducing mortality during TB treatment. To help guide policy in Vietnam, we studied the epidemiology of HIV-associated TB in one province and examined factors associated with outcomes, including the impact of CTX use. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We retrospectively abstracted data for all HIV-infected persons diagnosed with TB from 2001-2004 in An Giang, a province in southern Vietnam in which TB patients receive HIV counseling and testing. We used standard WHO definitions to classify TB treatment outcomes. We conducted multivariate analysis to identify risk factors for the composite outcome of death, default, or treatment failure during TB treatment. From 2001-2004, 637 HIV-infected TB patients were diagnosed in An Giang. Of these, 501 (79%) were male, 321 (50%) were aged 25-34 years, and the most common self-reported HIV risk factor was sex with a commercial sex worker in 221 (35%). TB was classified as smear-positive in 531 (83%). During TB treatment, 167 (26%) patients died, 9 (1%) defaulted, and 6 (1%) failed treatment. Of 454 patients who took CTX, 116 (26%) had an unsuccessful outcome compared with 33 (70%) of 47 patients who did not take CTX (relative risk, 0.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.3-0.5). Adjusting for male sex, rural residence, TB smear status and disease location, and the occurrence of adverse events during TB treatment in multivariate analysis, the benefit of CTX persisted (adjusted odds ratio for unsuccessful outcome 0.1; CI, 0.1-0.3). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: In An Giang, Vietnam, HIV-associated TB was associated with poor TB treatment outcomes. Outcomes were significantly better in those taking CTX. This finding suggests that Vietnam should consider applying WHO recommendations to prescribe CTX to all HIV-infected TB patients

    An Evaluation of Programmatic Community-Based Chest X-ray Screening for Tuberculosis in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

    Across Asia, a large proportion of people with tuberculosis (TB) do not report symptoms, have mild symptoms or only experience symptoms for a short duration. These individuals may not seek care at health facilities or may be missed by symptom screening, resulting in sustained TB transmission in the community. We evaluated the yields of TB from 114 days of community-based, mobile chest X-ray (CXR) screening. The yields at each step of the TB screening cascade were tabulated and we compared cohorts of participants who reported having a prolonged cough and those reporting no cough or one of short duration. We estimated the marginal yields of TB using different diagnostic algorithms and calculated the relative diagnostic costs and cost per case for each algorithm. A total of 34,529 participants were screened by CXR, detecting 256 people with Xpert-positive TB. Only 50% of those diagnosed with TB were detected among participants reporting a prolonged cough. The study's screening algorithm detected almost 4 times as much TB as the National TB Program's standard diagnostic algorithm. Community-based, mobile chest X-ray screening can be a high yielding strategy which is able to identify people with TB who would likely otherwise have been missed by existing health services

    Extraction and evaluation of antimicrobial activities of essential oils from orange peel (Citrus nobilis) grown in Can Tho City, Vietnam

    ABSTRACT: This study determined the extraction conditions, chemical composition, and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils of Citrus nobilis. The results illustrated that soaking in the 9% (w/v) NaCl solution for 2 h with a sample and solvent ratio of 1:3 (w/v) and a subsequent extraction time of 45 min yielded the highest extraction efficiency, reaching 3.66% (w/w). The main chemical components of the essential oils were limonene (90.42%), β-myrcene (4.7%), and α-pinene (1.22%). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at the density of 5x104, 5x105, and 5x106 cells/mL of Escherichia coli were 100, 125, and 125 mg/mL, respectively; for Staphylococcus aureus were 75, 100, and 125 mg/mL, respectively; and for Bacillus cereus were 50, 75, and 100 mg/mL, respectively. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) at densities of 5x104, 5x105, 5x106 cells/mL of E. coli were 175, 225, 225 mg/mL, S. aureus were 150, 200, 225 mg/mL, and B. cereus were 125, 175, 200 mg/mL, respectively. The inhibitory activities of Aspergillus flavus of orange essential oils according to the agar dilution method at concentrations of 0.025-0.1%) on the 5th day were 8.84-30.61%

    Study on biocharacteristics of Symbiodinium sp. isolated from soft coral in coastal water of Quang Nam, south central Vietnam

    Phototrophic dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium (= zooxanthellae) are well known as symbionts of corals. They play an important role in maintaining the healthy as well as establishment of new reefs. In addition, products such as toxins or pigments from these symbiotic microalgae are potentially important for applications in the biomedical sciences, especially in new drug development. In this study, we isolated successfully a symbiotic microalga from soft coral Sinularia sp. which was collected in Cu Lao Cham coastal waters of Quang Nam province. Based on morphological characteristics and 18S rRNA gene sequences, isolated SHM8 strain was identified as Symbiodinium goreaui. This symbiont was cultured in different media such as ASP-A8, F2, ES, IMK, K, and L1. L1 culture medium supplemented with taurine concentration of 4.88 mM led to the cell density of SHM8 strain increased in 50% compared to control on day 2 in cultivation; amino acid mixture enhanced cell density by 31.7% on day 5 in cultivation. Supplementation of carbon source (bicarbonate salt of 16.8 g/L) and nitrogen source (nitrate salt of 0.055 g/L) enhanced the cell density by 40% and 27%, respectively on day 6 in culture. Obtained results in this study proved that this microalga can live independently without host.     Anti-inflammatory coumarins from Paramignya trimera

    Context: Paramignya trimera (Oliv.) Burkill (Rutaceae) has been used to treat liver diseases and cancer. However, the anti-inflammatory effects of this medicinal plant and its components have not been elucidated. Objective: This study investigated chemical constituents of the P. trimera stems and evaluated anti-inflammatory effects of isolated compounds. Materials and methods: Cytotoxicity of isolated compounds (5–40 μM) toward BV2 cells was tested using 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) for 24 h. Inhibitory effects of isolated compounds (5-40 μM) on nitrite and PGE2 concentrations were determined using Griess reaction and PGE2 ELISA kit, respectively (pretreated with the compounds for 3 h and then stimulated for 18 h with LPS). Inhibitory effects of compounds (5-40 μM) on iNOS and COX-2 protein expression were evaluated by Western blot analysis (pretreated with the compounds for 3 h and then stimulated for 24 h with LPS). Results: Seven coumarins were isolated and identified as: ostruthin (1), ninhvanin (2), 8-geranyl-7-hydroxycoumarin (3), 6-(6′,7′-dihydroxy-3′,7′-dimethylocta-2′-enyl)-7-hydroxycoumarin (4), 6-(7-hydroperoxy-3,7-dimethylocta-2,5-dienyl)-7-hydroxycoumarin (5), 6-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran (6), and luvangetin (7). Compounds 1–4 and 7 inhibited NO and PGE2 production in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells, with IC50 values ranging from 9.8 to 46.8 and from 9.4 to 52.8 μM, respectively. Ostruthin (1) and ninhvanin (2) were shown to suppress LPS-induced iNOS and COX-2 protein expression. Discussion and conclusion: The present study provides a scientific rationale for the use of P. trimera in the prevention and treatment of neuroinflammatory diseases. Ostruthin and ninhvanin might have potential therapeutic effects and should be considered for further development as new anti-neuroinflammatory agents
