    Statistics of the Kolkata Paise Restaurant Problem

    We study the dynamics of a few stochastic learning strategies for the 'Kolkata Paise Restaurant' problem, where N agents choose among N equally priced but differently ranked restaurants every evening such that each agent tries get to dinner in the best restaurant (each serving only one customer and the rest arriving there going without dinner that evening). We consider the learning strategies to be similar for all the agents and assume that each follow the same probabilistic or stochastic strategy dependent on the information of the past successes in the game. We show that some 'naive' strategies lead to much better utilization of the services than some relatively 'smarter' strategies. We also show that the service utilization fraction as high as 0.80 can result for a stochastic strategy, where each agent sticks to his past choice (independent of success achieved or not; with probability decreasing inversely in the past crowd size). The numerical results for utilization fraction of the services in some limiting cases are analytically examined.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figs; accepted in New J Phy

    Diffusion bonding of commercially pure titanium to 304 stainless steel using copper interlayer

    Diffusion bonding was carried out between commercially pure titanium (cpTi) and 304 stainless steel (304ss) using copper as interlayer in the temperature range of 850–950 °C for 1.5 h under 3 MPa load in vacuum. The microstructures of the transition joints were revealed in optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The study exhibits the presence of different reaction layers in the diffusion zone and their chemical compositions were determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. The occurrence of different intermetallic compounds such as CuTi2, CuTi, Cu3Ti2, Cu4Ti3, FeTi, Fe2Ti, Cr2Ti, T2 (Ti40Cu60−xFex; 5 < x < 17), T3 (Ti43Cu57−xFex; 21 < x < 24) and T5 (Ti45Cu55−xFex; 4 < x < 5) has been predicted from the ternary phase diagrams of Fe–Cu–Ti and Fe–Cr–Ti. These reaction products were confirmed by X-ray diffraction technique. The maximum bond strength of 318 MPa (99.7% of Ti) was obtained for the couple bonded at 900 °C due to better coalescence of mating surface. With the rise in joining temperature to 950 °C, decrease in bond strength occurs due to formation of brittle Fe–Ti bases intermetallics. At a lower joining temperature of 850 °C, bond strength is also lower due to incomplete coalescence of the mating surfaces

    Detecting mobility context over smartphones using typing and smartphone engagement patterns

    Most of the latest context-based applications capture the mobility of a user using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors like accelerometer and gyroscope which do not need explicit user-permission for application access. Although these sensors provide highly accurate mobility context information, existing studies have shown that they can lead to undesirable leakage of location information. To evade this breach of location privacy, many of the state-of-the-art studies suggest to impose stringent restrictions over the usage of IMU sensors. However, in this paper, we show that typing and smartphone engagement patterns can act as an alternative modality to sniff the mobility context of a user, even if the IMU sensors are not sampled at all. We develop an adversarial framework, named ConType, which exploits the signatures exposed by typing and smartphone engagement patterns to track the mobility of a user. Rigorous experiments with in-the-wild dataset show that ConType can track the mobility contexts with an average micro-F1 of 0.87 (±0.09), without using IMU data. Through additional experiments, we also show that ConType can track mobility stealthily with very low power and resource footprints, thus further aggravating the risk

    A comment on black hole entropy or does Nature abhor a logarithm?

    There has been substantial interest, as of late, in the quantum-corrected form of the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy. The consensus viewpoint is that the leading-order correction should be a logarithm of the horizon area; however, the value of the logarithmic prefactor remains a point of notable controversy. Very recently, Hod has employed statistical arguments that constrain this prefactor to be a non-negative integer. In the current paper, we invoke some independent considerations to argue that the "best guess" for the prefactor might simply be zero.     Absorbing Phase Transition in a Four State Predator Prey Model in One Dimension

    The model of competition between densities of two different species, called predator and prey, is studied on a one dimensional periodic lattice, where each site can be in one of the four states say, empty, or occupied by a single predator, or occupied by a single prey, or by both. Along with the pairwise death of predators and growth of preys, we introduce an interaction where the predators can eat one of the neighboring prey and reproduce a new predator there instantly. The model shows a non-equilibrium phase transition into a unusual absorbing state where predators are absent and the lattice is fully occupied by preys. The critical exponents of the system are found to be different from that of the Directed Percolation universality class and they are robust against addition of explicit diffusion.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to appear in JSTA

    Higher dimensional dust collapse with a cosmological constant

    The general solution of the Einstein equation for higher dimensional (HD) spherically symmetric collapse of inhomogeneous dust in presence of a cosmological term, i.e., exact interior solutions of the Einstein field equations is presented for the HD Tolman-Bondi metrics imbedded in a de Sitter background. The solution is then matched to exterior HD Scwarschild-de Sitter. A brief discussion on the causal structure singularities and horizons is provided. It turns out that the collapse proceed in the same way as in the Minkowski background, i.e., the strong curvature naked singularities form and that the higher dimensions seem to favor black holes rather than naked singularities.Comment: 7 Pages, no figure

    Synthesis and Spectral Studies of CdTe–Dendrimer Conjugates

    In order to couple high cellular uptake and target specificity of dendrimer molecule with excellent optical properties of semiconductor nanoparticles, the interaction of cysteine-capped CdTe quantum dots with dendrimer was investigated through spectroscopic techniques. NH2-terminated dendrimer molecule quenched the photoluminescence of CdTe quantum dots. The binding constants and binding capacity were calculated, and the nature of binding was found to be noncovalent. Significant decrease in luminescence intensity of CdTe quantum dots owing to noncovalent binding with dendrimer limits further utilization of these nanoassemblies. Hence, an attempt is made, for the first time, to synthesize stable, highly luminescent, covalently linked CdTe–Dendrimer conjugate in aqueous medium using glutaric dialdehyde (G) linker. Conjugate has been characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In this strategy, photoluminescence quantum efficiency of CdTe quantum dots with narrow emission bandwidths remained unaffected after formation of the conjugate

    Fermions Tunnelling from Black Holes

    We investigate the tunnelling of spin 1/2 particles through event horizons. We first apply the tunnelling method to Rindler spacetime and obtain the Unruh temperature.     The Jacob2 Lectin of the Entamoeba histolytica Cyst Wall Binds Chitin and Is Polymorphic

    For many years, we and others have used cysts of Entamoeba invadens (Ei), a reptilian parasite, to model the infectious and diagnostic cysts of the human pathogen Entamoeba histolytica (Eh). The Ei cyst wall is composed of chitin fibrils, as well as Jacob and Jessie lectins that have unique chitin-binding domains. Our recent results suggest a “wattle and daub” model of the Ei cyst wall, where the wattle or sticks (chitin fibrils bound by multivalent Jacob lectins) is constructed prior to the addition of the mortar or daub (self-aggregating Jessie3 lectins). Here we “humanize” the Ei model of the cyst wall with four findings. First, a recombinant Eh Jacob2 lectin, which has three predicted chitin-binding domains surrounding a large spacer domain, binds chitin beads. Second, polymorphisms in the spacer domain of EhJacob2 discriminate clinical isolates of Entamoeba. Third, chitinase, Jacob2 lectin, and Jessie3 lectin are present in cyst walls of clinical isolates of Entamoeba. Finally, numerous sera from patients infected with Entamoeba recognize recombinant Eh Jacob1 and Jessie3 lectins
