Given a copula C, we examine under which conditions on an order isomorphism Ï of [0, 1] the distortion C Ï: [0, 1]2 â [0, 1], C Ï(x, y) = Ï{C[Ïâ1(x), Ïâ1(y)]} is again a copula. In particular, when the copula C is totally positive of order 2, we give a sufficient condition on Ï that ensures that any distortion of C by means of Ï is again a copula. The presented results allow us to introduce in a more flexible way families of copulas exhibiting different behavior in the tails
Formation of chlorite during thrust fault reactivation. Record of fluid origin and P-T conditions in the Monte Perdido thrust fault (southern Pyrenees)
The chemical and isotopic compositions of clay minerals such as illite and chlorite are commonly used to quantify diagenetic and low-grade metamorphic conditions, an approach that is also used in the present study of the Monte Perdido thrust fault from the South Pyrenean fold-and-thrust belt. The Monte Perdido thrust fault is a shallow thrust juxtaposing upper Cretaceous-Paleocene platform carbonates and Lower Eocene marls and turbidites from the Jaca basin. The core zone of the fault, about 6m thick, consists of intensely deformed clay-bearing rocks bounded by major shear surfaces. Illite and chlorite are the main hydrous minerals in the fault zone. Illite is oriented along cleavage planes while chlorite formed along shear veins (<50Όm in thickness). Authigenic chlorite provides essential information about the origin of fluids and their temperature. Ύ18O and ΎD values of newly formed chlorite support equilibration with sedimentary interstitial water, directly derived from the local hanging wall and footwall during deformation. Given the absence of large-scale fluid flow, the mineralization observed in the thrust faults records the P-T conditions of thrust activity. Temperatures of chlorite formation of about 240°C are obtained via two independent methods: chlorite compositional thermometers and oxygen isotope fractionation between cogenetic chlorite and quartz. Burial depth conditions of 7km are determined for the Monte Perdido thrust reactivation, coupling calculated temperature and fluid inclusion isochores. The present study demonstrates that both isotopic and thermodynamic methods applied to clay minerals formed in thrust fault are useful to help constrain diagenetic and low-grade metamorphic condition
Factors influencing carbon stocks and accumulation rates in eelgrass meadows across New England, USA
Increasing the protection of coastal vegetated ecosystems has been suggested as one strategy to compensate for increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere as the capacity of these habitats to sequester and store carbon exceeds that of terrestrial habitats. Seagrasses are a group of foundation species that grow in shallow coastal and estuarine systems and have an exceptional ability to sequester and store large quantities of carbon in biomass and, particularly, in sediments. However, carbon stocks (Corg stocks) and carbon accumulation rates (Corg accumulation) in seagrass meadows are highly variable both spatially and temporally, making it difficult to extrapolate this strategy to areas where information is lacking. In this study, Corg stocks and Corg accumulation were determined at 11 eelgrass meadows across New England, representing a range of eutrophication and exposure conditions. In addition, the environmental factors and structural characteristics of meadows related to variation in Corg stocks were identified. The objectives were accomplished by assessing stable isotopes of ÎŽ13C and ÎŽ15N as well as %C and %N in plant tissues and sediments, measuring grain size and 210Pb of sediment cores, and through assessing site exposure. Variability in Corg stocks in seagrass meadows is well predicted using commonly measured environmental variables such as grain size distribution. This study allows incorporation of data and insights for the northwest Atlantic, where few studies on carbon sequestration by seagrasses have been conducted
A Year of Gastrointestinal Bleeding: An Epidemiologic Study
Background: For decades the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) has been based largely on endoscopy. Studying a large cohort of patients presenting to the ED we may find cost-effective alternatives in the management of GIB. We analyzed the epidemiology and initial disposition of all patients who presented to our ED from the perspective of hematemesis versus non-hematemesis, to identify patterns among each cohortâs presentations to aid in this. Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records for 338 patients presenting to the UMass ED. Two cohorts were identified: those with hematemesis (G1) or non-hematemesis (G2). Results: 105 patients presented to the ED with hematemesis (G1), 233 patients presented with non-hematemesis GIB (G2). G1 was younger than G2 (54.4 years vs. 65.6 years, p\u3c0.001). There were more males in G1 vs. G2 (61% vs. 53%, p=0.154). Comorbities in G1 were liver disease (21%), alcohol abuse (20%), and diabetes (11%). Comorbities in G2 were coronary artery disease (22%), atrial fibrillation (13.7%), and diverticulosis (8%). More patients in G2 than G1 used Coumadin (23% vs. 7%, p\u3c0.001), anti-platelet agents (12% and 3%, p\u3c0.004), and NSAIDs (40% and 32%y, p=0.203). Admission hematocrit was greater in G1 compared to G2 (34.1 vs. 30.0, p\u3c0.001). INR was greater in G2 compared to G1 (1.7 vs. 1.3, p=0.03). BUN was greater in G2 compared to G1 (30.2 vs. 23.6, p=0.021). More patients in G2 were admitted compared to G1 (89.6% vs. 78.1%, p=0.019). More were admitted to the ICU in G1 compared to G2 (46% vs. 38%, p=0.237).Discussion: This study uses a novel approach that elicits different patterns than the traditional delineation of upper versus lower GIB. These results may lead to new decision-making in patients presenting with GIB, allowing for new diagnostic and management paradigms, resulting in cost-effective care
Severe hepatic sinusoidal obstruction associated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer
Background: In advanced metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma, the addition of a neo-adjuvant systemic treatment to surgery might translate into a survival advantage, although this is yet to be confirmed by ongoing randomized trials. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of preoperative systemic chemotherapy on the morphology of non-tumoral liver. Patients and methods: A large series of surgically resected liver metastases (n = 153) was selected. Light microscopy, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry using antibodies against endothelial cells (CD31) and hepatic stellate cells (α-SM actin, CRBP-1) were performed to identify sinusoidal wall integrity. Results: We found that 44 (51%) of the 87 post-chemotherapic liver resection specimens had sinusoidal dilatation and hemorrhage, related to rupture of the sinusoidal barrier. In contrast, the 66 livers treated by surgery alone remained normal. In 21 out of the 44 post-chemotherapy patients (48%), perisinusoidal and veno-occlusive fibrosis also developed. Sinusoidal injury persisted several months after end of chemotherapy, and fibrosis may progress. Development of lesions was strongly correlated to the use of oxaliplatin; 34 out of 43 patients (78%) treated with this drug showed striking sinusoidal alterations. Conclusions: Systemic neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer frequently causes morphological lesions involving hepatic microvasculature. Sinusoidal obstruction, complicated by perisinusoidal fibrosis and veno-occlusive lesion of the non-tumoral liver revealed by this study, should be included in the list of the adverse side-effects of colorectal systemic chemotherapy, in particular related to the use of oxaliplati
