Hubble-COS Observations of Galactic High-Velocity Clouds: Four AGN Sight Lines through Complex C
We report ultraviolet spectra of Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) in
Complex C, taken by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space
Telescope (HST), together with new 21-cm spectra from the Green Bank Telescope.
The wide spectral coverage and higher S/N, compared to previous HST spectra,
provide better velocity definition of the HVC absorption, additional ionization
species, and improved abundances in this halo gas. Complex C has a metallicity
of 0.1-0.3 solar and a wide range of ions, suggesting dynamical and thermal
interactions with hot gas in the Galactic halo. Spectra in the COS
medium-resolution G130M (1133-1468 A) and G160M (1383-1796 A) gratings detect
ultraviolet absorption lines from 8 elements in low ionization stages (O I, N
I, C II, S II, Si II, Al II, Fe II, P II) and 3 elements in intermediate and
high-ionization states (Si III, Si IV, C IV, N V). Our four AGN sight lines
toward Mrk 817, Mrk 290, Mrk 876, and PG1259+593 have high-velocity H I and O
VI column densities, log N_HI = 19.39-20.05 and log N_OVI = 13.58-14.10, with
substantial amounts of kinematically associated photoionized gas. The high-ion
abundance ratios are consistent with cooling interfaces between photoionized
gas and collisionally ionized gas: N(C IV)/N(O VI) = 0.3-0.5, N(Si IV)/N(O VI)
= 0.05-0.11, N(N V)/N(O VI) = 0.07-0.13, and N(Si IV)/N(Si III) = 0.2.Comment: 43 pages, 11 figures (appearing in ApJ, Sept 1, 2011
Vapor Deposited Cr-doped ZnS Thin Films: Towards Optically Pumped Mid-Infrared Waveguide Lasers
Compact, affordable mid-IR lasers require the development of gain materials in waveguide form. We report on the high vacuum deposition of Cr:ZnS films with concentration ranging from 1018-1020 dopants/cm3 . At low concentrations, films display well-isolated absorption associated with substitutional Cr2+ ions in the lattice. Spatial modulation of the dopant concentration suppresses the absorption associated with this substitution. Lateral crystallite sizes less than 30 nm are associated with the lowest substrate temperatures (\u3c50 °C) used during deposition, and waveguide losses as low as 8dB/cm are observed. These materials are promising candidates as gain media for fabrication of waveguide mid-IR lasers
Would you fix this code for me? Effects of repair source and commenting on trust in code repair
© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Automation and autonomous systems are quickly becoming a more engrained aspect of modern society. The need for effective, secure computer code in a timely manner has led to the creation of automated code repair techniques to resolve issues quickly. However, the research to date has largely ignored the human factors aspects of automated code repair. The current study explored trust perceptions, reuse intentions, and trust intentions in code repair with human generated patches versus automated code repair patches. In addition, comments in the headers were manipulated to determine the effect of the presence or absence of comments in the header of the code. Participants were 51 programmers with at least 3 years’ experience and knowledge of the C programming language. Results indicated only repair source (human vs. automated code repair) had a significant influence on trust perceptions and trust intentions. Specifically, participants consistently reported higher levels of perceived trustworthiness, intentions to reuse, and trust intentions for human referents compared to automated code repair. No significant effects were found for comments in the headers
Trust perceptions of metadata in open-source software: The role of performance and reputation
© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Open-source software (OSS) is a key aspect of software creation. However, little is known about programmers’ decisions to trust software from OSS websites. The current study emulated OSS websites and manipulated reputation and performance factors in the stimuli according to the heuristic-systematic processing model. We sampled professional programmers—with a minimum experience of three years—from Amazon Mechanical Turk (N = 38). We used a 3 × 3 within-subjects design to investigate the relationship between OSS reputation and performance on users’ time spent on code, the number of interface clicks, trustworthiness perceptions, and willingness to use OSS code. We found that participants spent more time on and clicked the interface more often for code that was high in reputation. Meta-information included with OSS tools was found to affect the degree to which computer programmers interact with and perceive online code repositories. Furthermore, participants reported higher levels of perceived trustworthiness in and trust toward highly reputable OSS code. Notably, we observed fewer significant main effects for the performance manipulation, which may correspond to participants considering performance attributes mainly within the context of reputation-relevant information. That is, the degree to which programmers investigate and then trust OSS code may depend on the initial reputation ratings
Renpenning Syndrome Maps to Xp11
SummaryMutations in genes on the X chromosome are believed to be responsible for the excess of males among individuals with mental retardation. Such genes are numerous, certainly >100, and cause both syndromal and nonsyndromal types of mental retardation. Clinical and molecular studies have been conducted on the Mennonite family with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) reported, in 1962, by Renpenning et al. The clinical phenotype includes severe mental retardation, microcephaly, up-slanting palpebral fissures, small testes, and stature shorter than that of nonaffected males. Major malformations, neuromuscular abnormalities, and behavioral disturbances were not seen. Longevity is not impaired. Carrier females do not show heterozygote manifestations. The syndrome maps to Xp11.2-p11.4, with a maximum LOD score of 3.21 (recombination fraction 0) for markers between DXS1039 and DXS1068. Renpenning syndrome (also known as “MRXS8”; gene RENS1, MIM 309500) shares phenotypic manifestations with several other XLMR syndromes, notably the Sutherland-Haan syndrome. In none of these entities has the responsible gene been isolated; hence, the possibility that two or more of them may be allelic cannot be excluded at present
Inducing locally structured ion energy distributions in intermediate-pressure plasmas
Ion energy distribution functions (IEDFs) incident upon material surfaces in radio frequency (rf) capacitively coupled plasmas are coupled to spatial and temporal sheath dynamics. Tailoring the ion energy distribution function within intermediate-pressure plasmas (133 Pa,
1 Torr), which find application in surface modification and aerospace industries, is challenging due to the collisional conditions. In this work, experimentally benchmarked 2D fluid/Monte-Carlo simulations are employed to demonstrate the production of structured IEDFs in a collisional (200 Pa 1.5 Torr argon) rf hollow cathode discharge. The formation of structures within the IEDFs is explained by an increase in the
Arþ ion-neutral mean-free-path and a simultaneous decrease in the phase-averaged sheath extension as the rf voltage frequency increases over 13.56–108.48 MHz for a constant rf voltage amplitude (increasing plasma power) and gas flow rate. Two distinct transitions in the shape of the IEDF are observed at 450 V, corresponding to the formation of “mid-energy” (60–180 eV) structures between 40.68 and 54.24 MHz and additional “high energy” (180 eV) structures between 81.36 and 94.92 MHz, with the structures within each region displaying a distinct sensitivity to the applied voltage amplitude. Transitions between these energy ranges occurred at lower applied voltages for increased
applied voltage frequencies, providing increased control of the mean and modal ion energy over a wider voltage range. The capabitlity to extend the range of access to an operational regime, where the structured IEDFs are observed, is desirable for applications that require control of the ion-bombardment energy under collisional plasma conditionsThe work presented herein was funded by the Engineering

Comparison of Overnight Pooled and Standard Sputum Collection Method for Patients with Suspected Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Northern Tanzania.
In Tanzania sputum culture for tuberculosis (TB) is resource intensive and available only at zonal facilities. In this study overnight pooled sputum collection technique was compared with standard spot morning collection among pulmonary TB suspects at Kibong'oto National TB Hospital in Tanzania. A spot sputum specimen performed at enrollment, an overnight pooled sputum, and single morning specimen were collected from 50 subjects and analyzed for quality, quantity, and time to detection in Bactec MGIT system. Forty-six (92%) subjects' overnight pooled specimens had a volume ≥5 mls compared to 37 (37%) for the combination of spot and single morning specimens (P < 0.001). Median time to detection was 96 hours (IQR 87-131) for the overnight pooled specimens compared to 110.5 hours (IQR is 137 right 137-180) for the combination of both spot and single morning specimens (P = 0.001). In our setting of limited TB culture capacity, we recommend a single pooled sputum to maximize yield and speed time to diagnosis
Investigation into the capability of a Salmonella choleraesuis live vaccine to reduce the shedding of Salmonella typhimurium in swine
Salmoneila remains one of the worlds leading causes of food-borne illness. The knowledge on the prevalence of slaughter hogs has been growing since more and more research teams are investigating into the occurrence of zoonotic Salmonella spp. in swine. There is no debate about the fact that clinically healthy slaughter hogs carrying Salmonella contribute to the introduction of the pathogen into the food chain. However, little is known about what to do in high-prevalence swine herds to reduce the Salmonella load of the finishing pigs entering the slaughter facilities, since the ubiquity of Salmonella and the still remaining gaps in the knowledge of the on-farm Salmonella epidemiology makes the control of the disease difficult
The HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. XXII. The Discovery of Cepheids in NGC 1326-A
We report on the detection of Cepheids and the first distance measurement to
the spiral galaxy NGC 1326-A, a member of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. We
have employed data obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board
the Hubble Space Telescope. Over a 49 day interval, a total of twelve V-band
(F555W) and eight I-band (F814W) epochs of observation were obtained. Two
photometric reduction packages, ALLFRAME and DoPHOT, have been employed to
obtain photometry measures from the three Wide Field CCDs. Variability analysis
yields a total of 17 Cepheids in common with both photometry datasets, with
periods ranging between 10 and 50 days. Of these 14 Cepheids with high-quality
lightcurves are used to fit the V and I period-luminosity relations and derive
apparent distance moduli, assuming a Large Magellanic Cloud distance modulus
(m-M) (LMC) = 18.50 +- 0.10 mag and color excess E(B-V) = 0.10 mag. Assuming
A(V)/E(V-I) = 2.45, the DoPHOT data yield a true distance modulus to NGC 1326-A
of (m-M)_0 = 31.36 +- 0.17 (random) +- 0.13 (systematic) mag, corresponding to
a distance of 18.7 \pm 1.5 (random) \pm 1.2 (systematic) Mpc. The derived
distance to NGC 1326-A is in good agreement with the distance derived
previously to NGC 1365, another spiral galaxy member of the Fornax cluster.
However the distances to both galaxies are significantly lower than to NGC
1425, a third Cepheid calibrator in the outer parts of the cluster.Comment: 33 pages A gzipped tar file containing 12 figures can be obtained
