Relationship between diffusion capacity and small airway abnormality in COPDGene.
Impaired single breath carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) is associated with emphysema. Small airways disease (SAD) may be a precursor lesion to emphysema, but the relationship between SAD and DLCO is undescribed. We hypothesized that in mild COPD, functional SAD (fSAD) defined by computed tomography (CT) and Parametric Response Mapping methodology would correlate with impaired DLCO. Using data from ever-smokers in the COPDGene cohort, we established that fSAD correlated significantly with lower DLCO among both non-obstructed and GOLD 1-2 subjects. The relationship between DLCO with CT-defined emphysema was present in all GOLD stages, but most prominent in severe disease. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT00608764. Registry: COPDGene. Controlling trapping potentials and stray electric fields in a microfabricated ion trap through design and compensation
Recent advances in quantum information processing with trapped ions have
demonstrated the need for new ion trap architectures capable of holding and
manipulating chains of many (>10) ions. Here we present the design and detailed
characterization of a new linear trap, microfabricated with scalable
complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) techniques, that is well-suited
to this challenge. Forty-four individually controlled DC electrodes provide the
many degrees of freedom required to construct anharmonic potential wells,
shuttle ions, merge and split ion chains, precisely tune secular mode
frequencies, and adjust the orientation of trap axes. Microfabricated
capacitors on DC electrodes suppress radio-frequency pickup and excess
micromotion, while a top-level ground layer simplifies modeling of electric
fields and protects trap structures underneath. A localized aperture in the
substrate provides access to the trapping region from an oven below, permitting
deterministic loading of particular isotopic/elemental sequences via
species-selective photoionization. The shapes of the aperture and
radio-frequency electrodes are optimized to minimize perturbation of the
trapping pseudopotential. Laboratory experiments verify simulated potentials
and characterize trapping lifetimes, stray electric fields, and ion heating
rates, while measurement and cancellation of spatially-varying stray electric
fields permits the formation of nearly-equally spaced ion chains.Comment: 17 pages (including references), 7 figure
Demonstration of integrated microscale optics in surface-electrode ion traps
In ion trap quantum information processing, efficient fluorescence collection
is critical for fast, high-fidelity qubit detection and ion-photon
entanglement. The expected size of future many-ion processors require scalable
light collection systems. We report on the development and testing of a
microfabricated surface-electrode ion trap with an integrated high numerical
aperture (NA) micromirror for fluorescence collection. When coupled to a low NA
lens, the optical system is inherently scalable to large arrays of mirrors in a
single device. We demonstrate stable trapping and transport of 40Ca+ ions over
a 0.63 NA micromirror and observe a factor of 1.9 enhancement in photon
collection compared to the planar region of the trap.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
Eclipsing binaries in the open cluster Ruprecht 147. II: EPIC 219568666
We report our spectroscopic monitoring of the detached, grazing, and slightly eccentric 12 day double-lined eclipsing binary EPIC 219568666 in the old nearby open cluster Ruprecht 147. This is the second eclipsing system to be analyzed in this cluster, following our earlier study of EPIC 219394517. Our analysis of the radial velocities combined with the light curve from the K2 mission yields absolute masses and radii for EPIC 219568666 of Mâ = 1.121 ± 0.013 Mâ and Râ = 1.1779 ± 0.0070 Râ for the F8 primary and Mâ = 0.7334 ± 0.0050 Mâ and Râ = 0.640 ± 0.017 Râ for the faint secondary. Comparison with current stellar evolution models calculated for the known metallicity of the cluster points to a primary star that is oversized, as is often seen in active M dwarfs, but this seems rather unlikely for a star of its mass and with a low level of activity. Instead, we suspect a subtle bias in the radius ratio inferred from the photometry, despite our best efforts to avoid it, which may be related to the presence of spots on one or both stars. The radius sum for the binary, which bypasses this possible problem, indicates an age of 2.76 ± 0.61 Gyr, which is in good agreement with a similar estimate from the binary in our earlier study
Spatially uniform single-qubit gate operations with near-field microwaves and composite pulse compensation
We present a microfabricated surface-electrode ion trap with a pair of
integrated waveguides that generate a standing microwave field resonant with
the 171Yb+ hyperfine qubit. The waveguides are engineered to position the wave
antinode near the center of the trap, resulting in maximum field amplitude and
uniformity along the trap axis. By calibrating the relative amplitudes and
phases of the waveguide currents, we can control the polarization of the
microwave field to reduce off-resonant coupling to undesired Zeeman sublevels.
We demonstrate single-qubit pi-rotations as fast as 1 us with less than 6 %
variation in Rabi frequency over an 800 um microwave interaction region. Fully
compensating pulse sequences further improve the uniformity of X-gates across

Racial differences in prostate inflammation: Results from the REDUCE study
Prostate cancer (PC) risk differs between races, and we previously showed prostate inflammation in benign prostate tissue was linked with a lower future PC risk. However, whether prostate tissue inflammation varies by race is unknown. We analyzed baseline acute and chronic prostate inflammation by race in REDUCE, a 4-year, multicenter, placebo-controlled study where all men had a negative prostate biopsy prior to enrollment. We included 7,982 men with standardized central pathology review to determine the presence or absence of chronic or acute inflammation in baseline prostate biopsy tissue. Logistic regression was used to compare prostate inflammation by race, adjusting for confounders. Of 7,982 men, 7,271 were white (91.1%), 180 (2.3%) black, 131 (1.6%) Asian, 319 (4.0%) Hispanic and 81 (1%) unknown. A total of 78% had chronic and 15% had acute inflammation. On multivariable analysis relative to white men, black men were less likely (OR = 0.65, 95%CI: 0.41-1.03
Light Curves and Period Changes of Type II Cepheids in the Globular Clusters M3 and M5
Light curves in the B, V, and I_c passbands have been obtained for the type
II Cepheids V154 in M3 and V42 and V84 in M5. Alternating cycle behavior,
similar to that seen among RV Tauri variables, is confirmed for V84. Old and
new observations, spanning more than a century, show that V154 has increased in
period while V42 has decreased in period. V84, on the other hand, has shown
large, erratic changes in period that do not appear to reflect the long term
evolution of V84 through the HR diagram.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure
The correlation between reading and mathematics ability at age twelve has a substantial genetic component
Dissecting how genetic and environmental influences impact on learning is helpful for maximizing numeracy and literacy. Here we show, using twin and genome-wide analysis, that there is a substantial genetic component to childrenâs ability in reading and mathematics, and estimate that around one half of the observed correlation in these traits is due to shared genetic effects (so-called Generalist Genes). Thus, our results highlight the potential role of the learning environment in contributing to differences in a childâs cognitive abilities at age twelve
Fermi Large Area Telescope Gamma-Ray Detection of the Radio Galaxy M87
We report the Fermi-LAT discovery of high-energy (MeV/GeV) gamma-ray emission
positionally consistent with the center of the radio galaxy M87, at a source
significance of over 10 sigma in ten-months of all-sky survey data. Following
the detections of Cen A and Per A, this makes M87 the third radio galaxy seen
with the LAT. The faint point-like gamma-ray source has a >100 MeV flux of 2.45
(+/- 0.63) x 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (photon index = 2.26 +/- 0.13) with no
significant variability detected within the LAT observation. This flux is
comparable with the previous EGRET upper limit (< 2.18 x 10^-8 ph cm^-2 s^-1, 2
sigma), thus there is no evidence for a significant MeV/GeV flare on decade
timescales. Contemporaneous Chandra and VLBA data indicate low activity in the
unresolved X-ray and radio core relative to previous observations, suggesting
M87 is in a quiescent overall level over the first year of Fermi-LAT
observations. The LAT gamma-ray spectrum is modeled as synchrotron self-Compton
(SSC) emission from the electron population producing the radio-to-X-ray
emission in the core. The resultant SSC spectrum extrapolates smoothly from the
LAT band to the historical-minimum TeV emission. Alternative models for the
core and possible contributions from the kiloparsec-scale jet in M87 are
