    Not AvailableSeveral initiatives were taken by the Directorate of Sorghum Research and concerned organizations to disseminate promising sorghum technologies. However, many of them were not accepted by the farmers at desired level due to several reasons. Therefore, it was felt necessary to assess the feasibility and appropriateness of recommended technologies as perceived primarily by the research system and followed by the extension personnel. These steps were felt to be a forerunner to screen the recommended technologies for their dissemination. The documentation of the sorghum production technologies / practices for both rainy and post-rainy season was made. The perception of 50 researchers regarding the feasibility of these technologies elucidated that out of 21 documented technologies, six were having feasibility scores of > 4.5 and < 2.2, while the rest of the nine technologies had a medium feasibility score in between 2.0 and 4.5 on a feasibility continuum ranging from 1.0 (not feasible) to 5.0 (highly feasible). Out of these six assessed technologies, extension personnel have perceived three each of technologies as highly appropriate and feasible. Correlation of eight indicators of appropriateness with feasibility of technologies was significant whereas, relative advantage had no correlation. Five indicators of appropriateness namely, simplicity, observability, physical compatibility, production sustainability and cost together explained 96.63 per cent of the total variation in feasibility. It stated that the five indicators are contributing significantly in feasibility of sorghum production technologies.     Not AvailableLow remuneration and adoption of sorghum production technologies were among the major constraints for drastic reduction in its cultivation. Therefore, evaluation of production potential, adoption, economic and other benefits of the technologies in social perspectives of the farmers was felt essential. The study was conducted with 200 adopted farmers under field trials organized during five years from 2009-10 to 2013-14 in five districts in two prominent sorghum growing regions in Maharashtra State of India. The yield potential and merits was measured by following before and after method, and data were collected through semi-structured interview schedule. The performance of the demonstrated technologies was resulted into increased in adoption (27%), higher net returns (170%), followed by grain yield (58%) with better quality (78%) and fodder yield (26%), and found to be significantly positive over the pre-FLD. It enabled to motivate farmers and increase in area under sorghum by 29 per cent. Furthermore, the additional returns helped them in spending significantly higher on purchase of household items (111%) followed by, on attending more social functions (109%), purchase of animals (91%), in start of new business (86%), deposit in bank (77%) and investment in farm development activities (62%).ICAR-IIMR, Hyderaba

    Not AvailableTraining is an integral part of agricultural development process. The study was aimed to assess impact of sorghum training. Results revealed that the learning index of the trainees was significantly correlated with their age, job experience, and level of satisfaction about training materials and atmosphere. Before training, majority of them (60%) belong to medium knowledge level between 16 and 30 knowledge score who had more than double knowledge score (49-84) after the training. Knowledge gained was found to be highly significant at 0.001% level. The topics viz., improved package of practices for rainy (kharif) and post-rainy (rabi) sorghum cultivation followed by approaches for improved sorghum technology transfer, sweet sorghum, major weeds of sorghum and their management and value-addition to sorghum with reference to its industrial uses and entrepreneurship development were perceived as more useful.
