Bayesian nonparametric tests via sliced inverse modeling
We study the problem of independence and conditional independence tests
between categorical covariates and a continuous response variable, which has an
immediate application in genetics. Instead of estimating the conditional
distribution of the response given values of covariates, we model the
conditional distribution of covariates given the discretized response (aka
"slices"). By assigning a prior probability to each possible discretization
scheme, we can compute efficiently a Bayes factor (BF)-statistic for the
independence (or conditional independence) test using a dynamic programming
algorithm. Asymptotic and finite-sample properties such as power and null
distribution of the BF statistic are studied, and a stepwise variable selection
method based on the BF statistic is further developed. We compare the BF
statistic with some existing classical methods and demonstrate its statistical
power through extensive simulation studies. We apply the proposed method to a
mouse genetics data set aiming to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and
obtain promising results.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figure
Theoretical analysis of Wolter/LSM X-ray telescope systems
A ray tracing analysis has been performed for the spectral slicing zoom X-ray telescope for configurations in which a convex layered synthetic microstructure (LSM) optic is placed in front of the prime focus or a concave LSM optic is placed behind the prime focus. The analysis has considered the geometrical shape of the LSM optic to be either a hyperboloid, sphere, ellipsoid or constant optical path aspheric element for two configurations of the glancing incidence X-ray telescope: the ATM Experimental S-056 Wolter I system and the Stanford/MSFC Wolter-Schwarzchild nested system. For the different systems the RMS blur circle radii, the point spread function (PSF), the full width half maximum (FWHM) of the PSF have been evaluated as a function of field angle and magnification of the secondary to determine resolution of the system. The effects of decentration and tilt of the selected LSM element on the performance of the system have been studied to determine mounting and alignment tolerances
Multiple charge beam dynamics in Alternate Phase Focusing structure
Asymmetrical Alternate Phase (A-APF) focusing realized in a sequence of 36
Superconducting Quarter Wave Resonators has been shown to accelerate almost 81
% of input Uranium beam before foil stripper to an energy of 6.2 MeV/u from 1.3
MeV/u. Ten charge states from 34+ to 43+ could be simultaneously accelerated
with the phase of resonators tuned for 34+. A-APF structure showed unique
nature of large potential bucket for charge states higher than that of tuned
one. Steering inherent to QWRs can be mitigated by selecting appropriate phase
variation of the APF periods and optimization of solenoid field strengths
placed in each of the periods. This mitigation facilitates multiple charge
state acceleration schemeComment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Theoretical design and analysis of the layered synthetic microstructure optic for the dual path X-ray telescope
A ray tracing analysis was performed for several configurations for the inner channel of the dual path X-ray telescope, which is proposed to use the second mirror of the Stanford/MSFC Wolter-Schwarzchild telescope and a normal incident layered synthetic microstructure (LSM) mirror to form a secondary image near the front of the telescope. The LSM mirror shapes considered were spherical, ellipsoid, hyperboloid, and constant optical path length (OPL) aspheric. Only the constant OPL case gave good axial resolution. All cases had poor off axis resolution as judged by the RMS blur circle radius
Snap-through behaviour of a bistable structure based on viscoelastically generated prestress
A novel form of shape-changing bistable structure has been successfully developed through the use of viscoelastically generated prestress. Bistability is achieved through pairs of deflecting viscoelastically prestressed polymeric matrix composite (VPPMC) strips, which are orientated to give opposing cylindrical configurations within a thin, flexible resin-impregnated fibreglass sheet. This arrangement enables the structure to ‘snap through’ between one of two states by external stimulation. Deflection from the VPPMC strips occurs through compressive stresses generated from the non-uniform spatial distribution of nylon 6,6 fibres undergoing viscoelastic recovery. In this study, snap-through behaviour of the bistable structure is investigated both experimentally and through finite element (FE) analysis. By using experimental results to calibrate FE parameter values, the modelling has facilitated investigation into the development of bistability and the influence of modulus ratio (fibreglass sheet: VPPMC strip) on the snap-through characteristics. Experimental results and FE simulation show good agreement with regard to snap-through behaviour of the bistable structure and from this, the bistability mechanisms are discussed
