    The Inhibitory Role of B7-H4 in Antitumor Immunity: Association with Cancer Progression and Survival

    B7-H4 is one of the most recently identified members of B7 superfamily of costimulatory molecules serving as an inhibitory modulator of T-cell response. B7-H4 is broadly expressed in human peripheral tissues and inducibly expressed in immune cells. The expression of B7-H4 has been observed in various types of human cancer tissues, and its soluble form has been detected in blood samples from cancer patients. However, its precise physiological role is still elusive, as its receptor has not been identified and the expression levels are not consistent. This paper summarizes the pertinent data on the inhibitory role of B7-H4 in antitumor immunity and its association with cancer progression and survival in human patients. The paper also discusses the clinical significance of investigating B7-H4 as potential markers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, and as therapeutic targets

    Suppressing excitation effects in microwave induced thermoacoustic tomography by multi-view Hilbert transformation

    Microwave induced thermoacoustic tomography (TAT) images usually suffer from distortions arising from the microwave polarization effect and standing wave effect. The microwave polarization effect, resulting from linearly polarized microwave illumination, splits the image of the object along the polarization direction, while the standing wave effect, when the object size is larger than the microwave wavelength within the object, modulates the image of the object. Both effects cause non-uniform energy distribution in a uniformly absorbing object and create artifacts in the reconstructed images. To address these problems in TAT, we propose an image reconstruction method that combines multi-view Hilbert transformation with the back-projection algorithm. We experimentally validate this method by imaging breast and brain tumor phantoms, showing that the aforementioned distortions are significantly suppressed. We anticipate that this method will contribute to clinical tumor diagnosis

    Homogenizing microwave illumination in thermoacoustic tomography by a linear-to-circular polarizer based on frequency selective surfaces

    A circularly polarized antenna, providing more homogeneous illumination compared to a linearly polarized antenna, is more suitable for microwave induced thermoacoustic tomography (TAT). The conventional realization of a circular polarization is by using a helical antenna, but it suffers from low efficiency, low power capacity, and limited aperture in TAT systems. Here, we report an implementation of a circularly polarized illumination method in TAT by inserting a single-layer linear-to-circular polarizer based on frequency selective surfaces between a pyramidal horn antenna and an imaging object. The performance of the proposed method was validated by both simulations and experimental imaging of a breast tumor phantom. The results showed that a circular polarization was achieved, and the resultant thermoacoustic signal-to-noise was twice greater than that in the helical antenna case. The proposed method is more desirable in a waveguide-based TAT system than the conventional method

    Information services on the Internet are being used as an important tool to facilitate discovery of the information that is of user interests. Many approaches have been proposed to discover the information on the Internet, while the search engines are the most common ones. However, most of the current approaches of information discovery can discover the keyword-matching information only but cannot recommend the most recent and relative information to users automatically. Sometimes users can give only a fuzzy keyword instead of an accurate one. Thus, some desired information would be ignored by the search engines. Moreover, the current search engines cannot discover the latent but logically relevant information or services for users. This paper measures the semantic-similarity and link-similarity between keywords. Based on that, it introduces the concept of similarity of web pages, and presents a method for information recommendation. The experimental evaluation and comparisons with the existing studies are finally performed

    Genome-wide analysis of a avirulent and reveal the strain induces pro-tective immunity against challenge with virulent Streptococcus suis Serotype 2

    BACKGROUND: It was previously reported in China that two recent large-scale outbreaks of Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2) infections in human were caused by two highly virulent S. suis 2 strains, from which a novel genomic island (GEI), associated with disease onset and progression and designated 89 K, was identified. Here, an avirulent strain, 05HAS68, was isolated from a clinically healthy pig. RESULTS: By comparing the genomes of this avirulent strain with virulent strains, it was found that massive genomic rearrangements occurred, resulting in alterations in gene expression that caused enormous single gene gain and loss. Important virulent genes were lost, such as extracellular protein factor (ef) and suilysin (sly) and larger mutants, such as muramidase-released protein (mrp). Piglets vaccinated with the avirulent strain, 05HAS68, had increased TNF-α and IFN-γ levels in the peripheral blood and were fully protected from challenge infection with the most virulent S. suis 2 strain, 05ZYH33. Transfusion of T cells and plasma from vaccinated pigs resulted in protection of recipient animals against the 05ZYH33 challenge. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that analysis genome of the avirulent strains are instrumental in the development of vaccines and for the functional characterization of important of genetic determinants
