    Compaction-Induced Distress of a Long-Span Culvert Overpass Structure

    Compaction of backfill produces soil stresses and earth pressures which are not amenable to analysis by conventional methods. These compaction-induced earth pressures can produce stresses and deformations in flexible buried culvert structures which may significantly affect the stability and performance of these structures. This paper presents the results of a study in which deformations of a long-span flexible metal culvert were measured during carefully monitored backfill operations. These field measurements were then compared with the results of finite element analyses in order to investigate (a) the influence of compaction effects on culvert stresses and deformations, and (b) the ability of recently developed finite element analysis procedures to accurately model these compaction effects. The structure being monitored suffered excessive and unacceptable deformations which were shown to be primarily the result of compaction effects; these were well modelled by the analyses performed

    Influences of Boundary Space Amelioration on Residents' Key Perceptions in Communities

    Boundary space amelioration (BSA) aims to eliminate barriers between two sites and activate the grey residual space in-between. School campus in Taiwan is often surrounded by walls, which blocks its connection to communities and often creates security concerns. School campus has become the most popular target for BSA, which tries to turn it into a functional and aesthetic space. This study intends to explore the influences of campus BSA within a community, especially its relationships with neighborhood safety, perceived change and place attachment. The result shows that the improvement of boundary environment has a significant influence on all three perceptions.     Fractographic analysis of fractured dental implant components

    AbstractBackground/purposeThis study investigated in seven patients the main causes of accidental fractures of various implant components.Materials and methodsWe used a scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope to observe the fracture interfaces of four fixtures, six abutment screws, and nine gold screws retrieved from patients with prosthetic problems.ResultsIn all fixtures and some abutment screws, parafunctional force and a cantilever design ultimately resulted in movement of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) at most fracture surfaces. Fractographic observations showed that overloading deformed the grain sizes, and the no precipitates were present on the high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) or matrices of some abutment screws and most gold screws.ConclusionTo avoid implant fracture, certain underlying mechanical risk factors should be noted such as patients with a habit of bruxism, bridgework with a cantilever design, or two implants installed in a line in the posterior mandible

    An Immunomodulatory Protein (Ling Zhi-8) from a Ganoderma lucidum

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an immunomodulatory protein (Ling Zhi-8, LZ-8) on wound healing in rat liver tissues after monopolar electrosurgery. Animals were sacrificed for evaluations at 0, 3, 7, and 28 days postoperatively. It was found that the wound with the LZ-8 treatment significantly increases wound healing. Western blot analysis clearly indicated that the expression of NF-κB was decreased at 3, 7, and 28 days when liver tissues were treated with LZ-8. Moreover, caspase-3 activity of the liver tissue also significantly decreases at 7 and 28 days, respectively. DAPI staining and TUNEL assays revealed that only a minimal dispersion of NF-κB was found on the liver tissue treated with LZ-8 at day 7 as compared with day 3 and tissues without LZ-8 treatment. Similarly, apoptosis was decreased on liver tissues treated with LZ-8 at 7 days when compared to the control (monopolar electrosurgery) tissues. Therefore, the analytical results demonstrated that LZ-8 induced acceleration of wound healing in rat liver tissues after monopolar electrosurgery

    Pulmonary function change in patients with Sauropus androgynus-related obstructive lung disease 15 years later

    Background/PurposeLittle is understood about the clinical course and prognosis of patients with Sauropus androgynus-related obstructive lung disease. The aim of this study was to investigate their clinical manifestations and pulmonary function change 15 years after the acute episode.MethodsA descriptive, observational study of patients with S androgynus-related obstructive lung disease, diagnosed 15 years ago, was conducted. We evaluated their pulmonary function and the Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) dyspnea scale. Saint George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) was also performed. Age- and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)-matched chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients were used as a reference group for comparison of clinical manifestations.ResultsTwenty-nine of 49 patients, diagnosed at our hospital 15 years ago, could be contacted. Four patients died and one patient was ventilator-dependent. Sixteen patients were willing to come to our hospital to have pulmonary function and questionnaire evaluation. The FEV1 of these patients declined only 1.6 ± 21.6 mL/year over a 15-year period. Meanwhile, the severity of their dyspnea and their health-related quality of life were better than age- and FEV1-matched COPD patients as shown by the MMRC dyspnea scale (1.4 ± 0.8 vs. 2.0 ± 1.0; p = 0.037) and symptom domain of the SGRQ (32.6 ± 18.4 vs. 43.5 ± 20.3; p = 0.006).ConclusionAfter an acute deterioration, patients with S androgynus-related obstructive lung disease had a stationary pulmonary function over a period of 15 years, and their clinical manifestations were less severe than age- and FEV1-matched COPD patients. A further study with a larger sample size may be needed to confirm these findings

    CAE Analysis of Primary Shaft Systems in Great Five-Axis Turning-Milling Complex CNC Machine

    The design and analysis of primary shaft systems by using the commercial software of computer aided engineering (CAE) in the heavy industry field are novel. The research purpose is to provide the computational results for the construction of primary shaft systems in the five-axis turning-milling complex machine. The CAE with commercial software is used to analyze the linear static construction, stress and deformation for primary shaft systems in the great five-axis turning-milling complex computer numerical control (CNC) machine. It is desirable to compute and find the most external loads of primary shaft systems in the CNC machine which can be used to operate in safety condition and under its yield stress value of materials. The linear computational results of static stresses and displacements in primary shaft systems are obtained and investigated with the commercial SOLIDWORKS® 2014 simulation module

    Construction and validation of a T cell proliferation regulator-related signature for predicting prognosis and immunotherapy response in lung adenocarcinoma

    BackgroundAs the main executor of immunotherapy, T cells significantly affect the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, the contribution of the T cell proliferation regulator to the prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and immunotherapy is still unclear.MethodsBased on T cell proliferation regulators, LUAD samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were divided into two different clusters by consensus clustering. Subsequently, the T cell proliferation regulator (TPR) signature was constructed according to the prognostic T cell proliferation regulators. Combined with clinical information, a nomogram for clinical practice was constructed. The predictive ability of the signature was verified by the additional Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset. We also analyzed the differences of tumor microenvironment (TME) in different subgroups and predicted the response to immunotherapy according to the TIDE algorithm. Finally, we further explored the role of ADA (Adenosine deaminase) in the lung adenocarcinoma cell lines through the knockdown of ADA. ResultsAccording to the consensus clustering, there were differences in survival and tumor microenvironment between two different molecular subtypes. T cell proliferation regulator-related signature could accurately predict the prognosis of LUAD. The low-risk group had a higher level of immune infiltration and more abundant immune-related pathways, and its response to immunotherapy was significantly better than the high-risk group (Chi-square test, p<0.0001). The knockdown of ADA inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion in lung adenocarcinoma cell lines.ConclusionT cell proliferation regulators were closely related to the prognosis and tumor microenvironment of LUAD patients. And the signature could well predict the prognosis of LUAD patients and their response to immunotherapy. ADA may become a new target for the treatment of LUAD
