Sex-specific in the relationship between hyperuricemia and pulse pressure in non-diabetic Korean adults: the 2017 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Background and objective: The present study assesses the relationship
between hyperuricemia and pulse pressure (PP) in non-diabetic Korean adults.
Material and methods: Data from 5122 subjects (2251 men and 2871 women)
in the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES
VII-2, 2017) were analyzed.
Results: Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and PP were significant factors
determining the odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia (uric acid ≥7.0 mg/dL
in men or ≥6.0 mg/dL in women) in men and the overall population. In
women, SBP, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and PP were not significant factors
determining the OR for hyperuricemia. After adjusting for related variables, the
OR of hyperuricemia was significantly higher in the high PP group (PP >60.0
mmHg) for men (OR, 1.760; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.152–2.688) and the
overall population (OR, 1.557; 95% CI, 1.132–2.140) compared with the normal PP
group, but this trend was not seen in women (OR, 1.060; 95% CI, 0.646–1.740).
Conclusions: Hyperuricemia was positively associated with PP in
non-diabetic Korean men but not in women
Sequential morphological changes in follow-up CT of pulmonary mucormycosis
PURPOSEWe aimed to describe the computed tomography (CT) features of pulmonary mucormycosis including sequential changes between follow-ups. MATERIALS AND METHODSBetween June 2001 and May 2011, five patients (three males and two females; median age, 43 years; age range, 13–73 years) who had been pathologically diagnosed with pulmonary mucormycosis constituted our study population. Their clinical and CT features including sequential changes over follow-ups were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTSAll patients were immunocompromised due to either hematologic diseases (n=3), diabetes mellitus (n=1), or steroid administration for autoimmune hepatitis (n=1). All patients had symptoms such as fever (n=5), tachycardia (n=1), or pleuritic chest pain (n=1) on admission. Regarding the clinical outcome after treatment, one patient died, and the remaining four recovered from the disease. In terms of initial CT features, the morphologies of pulmonary mucormycosis included a single mass (n=3), consolidation (n=1), or multiple masses (n=1). There were seven pulmonary lesions in total, 3–7 cm in size, which showed a CT halo sign (n=3), reversed-halo sign (n=2), or air-fluid levels (n=2). On follow-up CTs, the lesions of all patients contained necrosis. All three patients with a mass or masses with a CT halo sign on initial CT had a decreased surrounding halo followed by central necrosis, and the lesions gradually decreased in size on recovery. CONCLUSIONPulmonary mucormycosis usually manifests as a mass or masses with a halo or reversed-halo sign on the initial CT scan followed by a decreased extent of surrounding ground-glass opacities with the development of internal necrosis during follow-up
Efekti korišćenja astaksantina u ishrani na rast, pigmentaciju mišića i antioksidantne aktivnosti mlađi kalifornijske pastrmke (oncorhynchus mykiss)
This study was designed to test the effects of dietary astaxanthin on growth, muscle pigmentation, antioxidant activity and biochemical composition of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Experimental diets were formulated to contain 50, 75 and 100 ppm astaxanthin (designed as AS50, AS75 and AS100). The diet without supplementation of astaxanthin was considered as the control diet. Each experimental diet was fed to three replicate groups of fish (18.5 g/fish) to visual satiation two times a day for 10 weeks. Growth performance and proximate composition of muscle of fish were not affected by dietary AS levels (P> 0.05). Total carotenoid concentration in the muscle of fish fed the AS50 diet was higher than that of fish fed the control diet, but no different to that of fish fed the AS75 and AS100 diets. The astaxanthin concentration in the muscle of fish fed AS50, AS75 and AS100 diets were higher than that of control diet. The redness (a*) of the muscle of fish fed AS50, AS75 and AS100 diets were higher than that of fish fed the control diet (P 0.05) nije uticao na performansu rasta i hemijski sastav mišića ribe.
A Case of Gastric Adenocarcinoma Presenting as Meningeal Carcinomatosis
Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis occurs in approximately 5% of patients with cancer. The most common cancers involving the leptomeninges are breast, lung cancer and melanoma. However, gastric adenocarcinoma has been rarely reported with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. The presenting manifestations are usually headache, visual disturbances and seizures. We report a case of leptomeningeal metastasis that presented as a gastric cancer. A 49-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the symptoms of headache and melena for 10 days. The endoscopy showed a thickening of the folds of the stomach compatible with the diagnosis of a Borrman type IV gastric cancer. The biopsy revealed a signet ring cell carcinoma. The MRI of brain showed no abnormal findings; however, the patient complained of an intractable persistent headache, nausea and vomiting on admission day 6. The cytology examination of the cerebrospinal fluid supported the diagnosis of metastatic signet ring cell carcinoma
Effect of Achyranthes bidentata
The present study investigated the antiobesity effect of Achyranthes bidentata Blume root water extract in a 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation model and rats fed with a high-fat diet. To investigate the effect of Achyranthes bidentata Blume on adipogenesis in vitro, differentiating 3T3-L1 cells in adipocyte-induction media were treated every two days with Achyranthes bidentata Blume at various concentrations (1 to 25 μg/mL) for eight days. We found that Achyranthes bidentata Blume root inhibited 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation without affecting cell viability, and Western blot analysis revealed that phospho-Akt expression was markedly decreased, whereas there was no significant change in perilipin expression. Furthermore, administration of Achyranthes bidentata Blume root (0.5 g/kg body weight for six weeks) to rats fed with a high-fat diet significantly reduced body weight gain without affecting food intake, and the level of triglyceride was significantly decreased when compared to those in rats fed with only a high-fat diet. These results suggest that Achyranthes bidentata Blume root water extract could have a beneficial effect on inhibition of adipogenesis and controlling body weight in rats fed with a high-fat diet
Pulmonary nodular ground-glass opacities in patients with extrapulmonary cancers: what is their clinical significance and how can we determine whether they are malignant or benign lesions?
BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of pulmonary nodular ground-glass opacities (NGGOs) in patients with extrapulmonary cancers is not known, although there is an urgent need for study on this topic. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the clinical significance of pulmonary NGGOs in these patients, and to develop a computerized scheme to distinguish malignant from benign NGGOs. METHODS: Fifty-nine pathologically proven pulmonary NGGOs in 34 patients with a history of extrapulmonary cancer were studied. We reviewed the CT scan characteristics of NGGOs and the clinical features of these patients. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were constructed and tested as a classifier distinguishing malignant from benign NGGOs. The performance of ANNs was evaluated with receiver operating characteristic analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients (82.4%) were determined to have malignancies. Forty NGGOs (67.8%) were diagnosed as malignancies (adenocarcinomas, 24; bronchioloalveolar carcinomas, 16). Among the rest of the NGGOs, 14 were atypical adenomatous hyperplasias, 4 were focal fibrosis, and 1 was an inflammatory nodule. There were no cases of metastasis appearing as NGGOs. Between malignant and benign NGGOs, there were significant differences in lesion size; the presence of internal solid portion; the size and proportion of the internal solid portion; the lesion margin; and the presence of bubble lucency, air bronchogram, or pleural retraction (p < 0.05). Using these characteristics, ANNs showed excellent accuracy (z value, 0.973) in discriminating malignant from benign NGGOs. CONCLUSIONS: Pulmonary NGGOs in patients with extrapulmonary cancers tend to have high malignancy rates and are very often primary lung cancers. ANNs might be a useful tool in distinguishing malignant from benign NGGOs
Assessment of Allergic Rhinitis Websites in Korea
Objectives. The internet has become an important source of medical information and a great amount of information related to allergic rhinitis (AR) is available on the internet. However, the quality of this information is still a matter of debate. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the AR-related information on Korean websites. Methods. The key word "allergic rhinitis" was entered into 4 popular search engines, and this led to identifying 40 websites. After being categorized according to authorship, the informational value of these websites was evaluated using 4 different assessment tools such as the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmarks, the DISCERN questionnaire, the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) 2008 Update and the Health On the Net (HON) code. Results. The 40 websites containing AR-related information were categorized according to their authorship as Western physician: 20, Oriental physician: 14, commercial: 1, and others: 5. The mean citation frequencies of the JAMA benchmarks and the ARIA 2008 Update concepts was 1.23 out of 4 and 4.33 out of 8, respectively, while the mean DISCERN score was 1.92 out of 5. When the websites were evaluated based on the type of authorship, the mean citation frequencies of the AMA 2008 Update concepts were Western physician: 5.35, Oriental physician: 2.64. Additionally, three websites authored by Western physicians and 13 authored by Oriental physicians contained unreliable information. Among these 16 websites, only 3 websites met the requirements for the HON code "Justification". Conclusion. AR-related information available on Korean websites is of variable quality and not all of the information provided is justifiable. Thus, performing surveillance of the medical information on these websites is necessary. Furthermore, common criteria that can be used to evaluate the websites created by both Western and Oriental physicians are also needed.Bousquet J, 2008, ALLERGY, V63, P8*HLTH NET FDN, 2006, HLTH NET COD COND VESILVA LVE, 2005, BRAZILIAN J OTHORHIN, V71, P590Park HW, 2004, J KOREAN MED SCI, V19, P364Winker MA, 2000, JAMA-J AM MED ASSOC, V283, P1600Charnock D, 1999, J EPIDEMIOL COMMUN H, V53, P105Silberg WM, 1997, JAMA-J AM MED ASSOC, V277, P1244
