Signatures of the neutrino mass hierarchy in supernova neutrinos
The undetermined neutrino mass hierarchy may leave an observable imprint on
the neutrino fluxes from a core-collapse supernova (SN). The interpretation of
the observables, however, is subject to the uncertain SN models and the flavor
conversion mechanism of neutrinos in a SN. We attempt to propose a qualitative
interpretation of the expected neutrino events at terrestrial detectors,
focusing on the accretion phase of the neutrino burst. The flavor conversions
due to neutrino self-interaction, the MSW effect, and the Earth regeneration
effect are incorporated in the calculation. It leads to several distinct
scenarios that are identified by the neutrino mass hierarchies and the
collective flavor transitions. Consequences resulting from the variation of
incident angles and SN models are also discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
Working Hours Reduction and Endogenous Growth
This paper formulates an endogenous growth model and uses it to inquire into the long-run impact of work-sharing arrangements on economic growth. We show that the styles of wage contract, namely salary-style and hourly-style contracts, are a key factor in determining the long-run growth effects of working time reduction. If the labor market is overwhelmingly salaried arrangement, then the extent of wage flexibility is relatively low; as a consequence, a policy of reducing working hours will deteriorate economic growth. On the contrary, if hourly pay predominates, then the wage system tends to increase the degree of wage flexibility. Thus, a cut in working time may favor the economy’s growth rate.Working hours reduction, Endogenous growth
INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE BETWEEN TAIWAN AND ASEAN-5 IN THE AGRO-FOOD SECTOR: PATTERNS AND DETERMINANTS
This paper attempts to identify the patterns and determinants of the levels of IIT between Taiwan and ASEAN-5 during the past three decades. Our empirical results confirm the belief that IIT between Taiwan and ASEAN-5 in the agro-food sector has been growing over time. Although industry-specific factors like market size and product differentiation have desirable impacts on IIT, taste overlaps do not. No deterministic conclusion can be drawn from the effect of trade liberalization as implied by removing trade barriers when shaping the future development of IIT. However, the indirect effect arising from income and consumer preferences' convergence may be the main determinant in promoting intra-industry agro-food trade among the Asian countries.International Relations/Trade,
Static Balancing Control of Humanoid Robot based on Accelerometer
[[abstract]]A static balancing control method is proposed and implemented on a humanoid robot so that the robot can stand and balance on a plane. A small-size humanoid robot named TWNHR-IV with 26 degree-of-freedom (DOF) is implemented. A 3-axis accelerometer is installed on TWNHR-IV to obtain the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis accelerations of TWNHR-IV. Based on the obtained information from the 3-axis accelerometer, a system structure with two two-input-and-one-output fuzzy systems is proposed. The acceleration and the accelerationpsilas variation of the x-axis obtained by the 3-axis accelerometer are considered to be the inputs of forward-and-backward fuzzy system. The acceleration and the accelerationpsilas variation of the y-axis are considered to be the inputs of right-and-left fuzzy system. Some practical tests are presented to illustrate the proposed method can let the humanoid robot stand and balance on a plane.[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencelocation]]Tokyo, Japa
The depolarization response element in acetylcholine receptor genes is a dual-function E box
AbstractAll acetylcholine receptor subunit genes contain E boxes and are blocked by membrane depolarization. We have used transfected C2C12 myogenic cells to investigate the response, to electrical stimulation and KCl, of wildtype and mutant regulatory regions of the chick acetylcholine receptor α, γ and δ subunit, and the mouse MLC genes. Point mutations revealed that E boxes function as activating elements targeted by the depolarization signal. These experiments suggest, and insertion of a depolarization response element into an unrelated promoter confirms, that plasma membrane depolarization switches the depolarization response element from an activating to a repressive mode
An Ultra-Low Power Holter and Low Complexity Design Using Mixed Signal Processor
[[abstract]]An ultra-low power, portable, and easily implemented Holter recorder is necessary for patients or researchers of electrocardiogram (ECG). Such a Holter recorder with off-the-shelf components is realized with mixed signal processor (MSP) in this paper. To decrease the complexity of analog circuits and the interference of 60 Hz noise from power line, we use the MSP to implement a finite impulse response (FIR) filter which is equiripple design. We also integrate the ring buffer for the input samples and the symmetrical characteristic of the FIR filter for efficiently computing convolution. The experimental results show that the ECG output signal with the PQRST feature is easy to be distinguished. This ECG signal is recorded for 24 hours using a SD card. Furthermore, the ECG signal is transmitted with a smartphone via Bluetooth to decrease the burden of the Holter recorder. As a result, this paper uses the Lomb method for the spectral analysis of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) better than Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).[[incitationindex]]EI[[booktype]]電子版[[booktype]]紙
On the Influencing Factors of Dictionary App Interface Design for the Elders
AbstractEnglish learning is becoming one of the popular movements towards the Globalization. In recent years especially, more people use smartphones to learn English. However, it was found in the current market that most dictionary apps were designed for the younger generation and neglected the needs of the elderly. The issue of memory over-load turned out to be the critical problem of the usability for the elderly, due to the complex menu structures. Thus this study is meant to explore a suitable menu structure for the senior user, and provide suggestions for the relative researches. The study results are:1.Gender: There is no significant between male and female in the operating performance.2.Menu structure: the performance of the hybrid structure is superior to the linear structure.3.Display mode: There is no significant between the horizontal and vertical display modes in operating performance.4.Task Complexity: A positive ratio between task complexity and menu topological structure was revealed, the harder the task complexity, the better performance of mixed structure can be expected
A Study of Mazuism Religious Tourism in Taiwan: an Example of Dajia Jenn Lann Temple
Although the study of Mazuism has been popular among scholars, few have attempted to touch upon its religious tourist behaviour; however, as the purpose of their travel is to worship at the Mazu Temple, it is thus, a tourism destination. Therefore, from the perspective of religious sustainable operation, it is important to understand the tourist behavior patterns of religious tourists visiting Mazu Temple. The purpose of this study is to analyze the interrelationships between destination image, service quality, perceived value, satisfaction, and behavioural intention. This study is conducted with convenience sampling methods for tourists visiting Jenn Lann Temple in Dajia, Taichung, Taiwan, and a total of 408 valid questionnaires are obtained. The valid questionnaires collected in this study are statistically analysed using descriptive statistics and PLS. The results show that destination image, service quality, perceived value, and satisfaction have positive impacts on tourists’ behavioural intention. According to the results of the above analysis, this study constructs a religious tourism behaviour model of Mazu believers and gives management advice to the Mazu Temple
