A Generative Study of Discourse in Korean : On Connecting Sentencecs

O. In some models of generative grammar, there is a base rule like (1. a). by which the sentence is expanded to form a ccordinate construction as shcwn in (1. b) (cf. Ross 1967; StockweIl et al 1968). However, in the model of sentence grammar whose domain is limited to sentencehood, it is infeasible to attempt to describe two or more sentences in a given discourse as semanticaIly related to each other and syntactically reducible to one single sentence. By contrast, in a model of discourse grammar the process of sentence reduction can be described in the base by a rule like (2. b), given an initial rule like (2. a)

In this paper I will explicate the speech acts of rhetorical and echo questions, and 'rhechorical', questions, as illustrated in the dialogue exchange between Speakers A and B in (1): Clb) is a rhetorical question; (Ic) is a 'rhechorical' question. (1) a. A: Mia-ka Chelswu-Iul an cohahay: Hia-to kulay.l 'Mia doesn't like Chelswu. Hia doesn't, either.' b. B: Nwukwu-nun Chelswu-Iul cohahay? 'Who (ever) likes Chelswu?' c. A: Nwukwil-nun Chelswu-Iul cohahanunya ko? 'Who (ever) likes Chelswu?' d. B: Kulem, ney-ka cohahanun kuna. 'Then, you like him.
