    O. In some models of generative grammar, there is a base rule like (1. a). by which the sentence is expanded to form a ccordinate construction as shcwn in (1. b) (cf. Ross 1967; StockweIl et al 1968). However, in the model of sentence grammar whose domain is limited to sentencehood, it is infeasible to attempt to describe two or more sentences in a given discourse as semanticaIly related to each other and syntactically reducible to one single sentence. By contrast, in a model of discourse grammar the process of sentence reduction can be described in the base by a rule like (2. b), given an initial rule like (2. a)
