A traditional prom dress can generally be worn only once; therefore, the purpose of the design was to create a prom dress that is versatile and suitable enough to be worn to various special occasions. The design represents the astrological Scorpio sign. She is unafraid and filled with passion. Since leather was selected for making the dress, the cutting and stitching of the leather patterns were the challenges of the design

New Orleans has a unique identity influenced as much by its Creole culture as by the land it occupies. Bordered by the Mississippi River, Lake Pontchartrain, Wetlands, and Bayou Savage, its distinct wildlife and climate shaped its demography as colonizers from France and Spain began to explore the area. My purpose was to create a cohesive image of New Orleans from the crudity of the bayou to intricacy of the French Quarter. New Orleans has an excess of alligator skins with imperfections including cuts, scale slips, and subcutaneous blemishes. Though these skins are deemed undesirable, I wanted to portray their beauty—imperfections included. Thus, I designed a cocktail dress with a zero-waste mindset so every part of the alligator could be showcased. My design was composed of alligator skin, metal hardware, and cotton Ponte knit. I juxtaposed these different materials so their contrast can exemplify their individual essences

Knitting is an old and often taken for granted art form, but to me, it is a brand new concept I have yet to to fully discover. As a fashion designer, I typically begin the construction of my garments with fabric. However, I wanted to understand how yarn becomes fabric and to explore the full processes of design and construction. I traveled to Fu Jen Catholic University to research machine knitting techniques. Using the pieces I knitted, I created a dress that features black accordion pleats at front as a focal point and black ribs on the back connected by a blue all knit strip. Blue cording was stitched at the hem and continuously run in the middle of the stole from one end to the other for texture and details. The dress can be worn with or without the spaghetti belt depending on personal preference and occasion

The wrapping of gifts is such a way that a two-dimensional plane may be folded into a threedimensional figure, particularly the rectangular prism, acted as the main inspiration to create a women’s winter cape. Flat, arbitrary shapes, including half circles and zigzags, were incorporated into the design to further the idea of geometry and to operate as functional details

Electrical Control of Magnetization in Charge-ordered Multiferroic LuFe2O4

LuFe2O4 exhibits multiferroicity due to charge order on a frustrated triangular lattice. We find that the magnetization of LuFe2O4 in the multiferroic state can be electrically controlled by applying voltage pulses. Depending on with or without magnetic fields, the magnetization can be electrically switched up or down. We have excluded thermal heating effect and attributed this electrical control of magnetization to an intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in response to the electrical breakdown of charge ordering. Our findings open up a new route toward electrical control of magnetization.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the effects of adenovirus (Ad)-mediated hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α) gene on proliferation and differentiation of endogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) in rats following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and the underlying mechanisms.MethodsA total of 120 specific pathogen-free, adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats were included in this study. After establishment of ICH models in rats, PBS, Ad, or Ad-HIF-1α was administered via the ischemic ventricle. On the 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th d after ICH, rat neurological deficits were scored, doublecortin (DCX) expression in the subventricular zone cells was detected by immunohistochemical staining, and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-, BrdU/DCX-, and BrdU/glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive cells in the subventricular zone were counted using immumofluorescence method among PBS, Ad, and Ad-HIF-1α groups.ResultsOn the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th d after ICH, neurological deficit scores in the Ad-HIF-1α group were significantly lower than in the PBS and Ad groups (P<0.05). In the Ad-HIF-1α group, DCX expression was significantly increased on the 7th d, peaked on the 14th d, and then gradually decreased. In the Ad-HIF-1α group, BrdU-positive cells were significantly increased over time course, and significant difference in BrdU-positive cell counts was observed when compared with the PBS and Ad groups at each time point (P<0.01 or 0.05). On the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th d after ICH, the number of DCX-, BrdU-, BrdU/DCX-, and BrdU/DCX-positive cells in the Ad-HIF-1α group was significantly greater than in the PBS and Ad groups (P<0.05).ConclusionsHIF-1α gene can promote the proliferation, migration and differentiation of endogenous neural stem cells after ICH, thereby contributing to neurofunctional recovery after ICH

Further Study On U(1) Gauge Invariance Restoration

To further investigate the applicability of the projection scheme for eliminating the unphysical divergence s/me2s/m_e^2 due to U(1) gauge invariance violation, we study the process e+W+e+tˉ+be^-+W^+\to e^-+\bar t+b which possesses advantages of simplicity and clearness. Our study indicates that the projection scheme can indeed eliminate the unphysical divergence s/me2s/m_e^2 caused by the U(1) gauge invariance violation and the scheme can apply to very high energy region.Comment: Latex, 13 pages, 4 EPS fiure

An exploration of factors related to quality of life in Indonesian care workers in home-based care settings

Background Indonesians constituted 79% of foreign care workers for long-term care in Taiwan in 2015. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the effect of work stress and quality of life (QoL) on this population.Purpose This study aims to explore stress levels, social support requirements, and perceived QoL among Indonesian care workers (ICWs) who work in home care settings. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected between 2014 and 2016 from a convenience sample of ICWs working in eastern Taiwan using a self-administered questionnaire that comprised the Stress Perception Scale (SPS), Social Support Scale (SSS), and World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief scale. One hundred fifty-seven valid questionnaires were collected. The response rate was 80.51%. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results The results found that the average SPS of the sample was 70.50, with low QoL scores and requirements for more social support. In addition, significant and positive correlations were found between QoL and SPS, SSS, duration of patient care, and hours of care per week. Stepwise regression analysis showed that the most predictive variables for QoL were time spent caring, preservice training, psychological stress, and emotional support, which together accounted for 60.9% of the total variance.Conclusions/Implications for Practice This study facilitated understanding of the stress on ICWs and the impact of social support on their QoL. The findings suggest that new immigrants in Taiwan should be introduced to foreign care workers or nursing attendants. Moreover, long-term-care-related teachers should work with home care institutions or agencies to develop a teaching model for innovative care skills to relieve the perceived stress of ICWs

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cre/<it>lox</it>P-mediated genetic modification is the most widely used conditional genetic approach used in the mouse. Engineered Cre and the mutated ligand-binding domain of estrogen receptor fusion recombinase (CreERT) allow temporal control of Cre activity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, we have generated two distinct transgenic mouse lines expressing CreERT, which show 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OHT)-inducible and spontaneous (4-OHT-independent) Cre activities, referred to <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)I </it>and <it>Tg(BK5-CreER</it><it>T</it><it>)S</it>, respectively. The transgenic construct is driven by the bovine Keratin 5 promoter, which is active in the basal epithelial lineage of stratified and pseudo-stratified epithelium across multiple organs. A simple statistical speech recognition of mandarin monosyllables

    Get PDF
Abstract Each mandarin syllable is represented by a sequence of vectors of linear predict coding cepstra (LPCC). Since all syllables have a simple phonetic structure, in our speech recognition, we partition the sequence of LPCC vectors of all syllables into equal segments and average the LPCC vectors in each segment. The mean vector of LPCC is used as the feature of a syllable. Our simple feature does not need any time consuming and complicated nonlinear contraction and expansion as adopted by the dynamic time-warping. We propose several probability distributions for the feature values. A simplified Bayes decision rule is used for classification of mandarin syllables. For the speaker-independent mandarin digits, the recognition rate is 98.6% if a normal distribution is used for feature values and the rate is 98.1% if an exponential distribution is used for the absolute values of the features. The feature proposed in this paper to represent a syllable is the simplest one, much easier to be extracted than any other known features. The computation for feature extraction and classification is much faster and more accurate than using the HMM method or any other known techniques
