Performance Analysis of Dual Unipolar/Bipolar Spectral Code in Optical CDMA Systems
This study analyzes and calculates dual unipolar and bipolar coded configurations of spectral-amplitude-coding opticalcode division multiple access (SAC-OCDMA) systems by using simulation methods. The important feature of theSAC-OCDMA systems is that multiple access interference (MAI) can be eliminated by code sequences of a fixed inphasecross-correlation value. This property can be effectively canceled multiple access interference by using balancedetection schemes. This study uses Walsh-Hadamard codes as signature codes for the unipolar and bipolar schemes.The coder and decoder structures are based on optical filters of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The simulation results ofunipolar/bipolar coding structures are first presented by commercial simulation obtained using OptiSystem software.The simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) through use of the bipolar coding method is superior to theunipolar scheme, especially when the received effect power is large. When the system needs good performance totransmit multimedia data, we can use bipolar scheme in the network. If the users only transmit voice data, the unipolarmethod can be employed. The eye diagram also shows that the bipolar encoding structure exhibits a wider openingthan the unipolar encoding structure. The flexible implementation of codewords assigns and integratable hardwaredesigns for the scheme with FBGs to realize dual coding OCDMA system is proposed

Serum pepsinogen I (PGI) levels were measured in 231 duodenal ulcer (DU) patients and 100 sex and age-comparable healthy controls. Significantly higher mean serum PGI levels were found in DU patients than in controls (124,7 ± 3,4 ng/ml v. 92,9 ± 2,3 ng/ml; P < 0,001) (mean ± SE). These levels were higher in male DU patients than in female DU patients (128,5 ± 3,9 ng/IDl v. 107,4 ± 6,4 ng/ml; P < 0,05). Smoking was associated with elevated serum PGI levels in DU patients (145,3 ± 5,1 ng/ml v. 109,0 ± 4,2 ngl/ml; P < 0,001). Healed DUs were associated with lower mean serum PGI levels than active ulcers (110,9 ± 7,6 ng/ml v. 129,4 ± 3,8 ng/ml, P < 0,05). Whether patients were positive or negative for Helicobacter pylori, infection did not affect mean serum PGI levels. All the risk factors for DU may not affect serum PGI levels and DU may therefore be considered a multifactorial disease
Enhancement of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity is associated with treatment response to extracorporeal photopheresis in Sézary syndrome.
Sézary syndrome (SS) is a rare, leukemic type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), for which extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is a first-line therapy. Reliable biomarkers to objectively monitor the response to ECP in patients with SS are missing. We examined the quantitative and qualitative impact of ECP on natural killer (NK) cell activity in SS patients, and especially their functional ability for antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC). Further, we addressed the question whether the magnitude of the effect on ADCC can be associated with the anti-cancer efficacy of ECP in SS patients. We assessed numbers of NK cells, ADCC activity, and treatment response based on blood tumor staging in a cohort of 13 SS patients (8 women, 5 men) treated with ECP as a first-line therapy. Blood samples were collected before treatment start and after an average of 9 months of uninterrupted ECP treatment. NK cell numbers were reduced in SS patients compared to healthy individuals and showed a tendency of recovery after long-term ECP treatment, independent of the clinical response to treatment. Patients with marginal increase (≤1.5 AU-fold) or lack of increase in ADCC activity failed to respond clinically to treatment, while patients with an increased ADCC activity showed a reduction in blood tumor burden. NK-mediated ADCC is selectively enhanced and might be a mechanism underlying the effect of ECP while in addition it can possibly serve as a reliable biomarker to objectively monitor response to ECP in patients with SS
CFD simulations of the spent fuel pool in the loss of coolant accident
Paper presented at the 9th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Malta, 16-18 July, 2012.The study utilized the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methodology to investigate the thermal hydraulic behavior during the hypothetical event of normal operation and loss of cooling accident occurring at spent fuel pool. The boiling time, water level decreasing rate, fuel exposure time and temperature response after fuel exposure for the nuclear power plants under the accident were predicted in this study. We also analyze the flow and heat transfer for the single Atrium-10 fuel bundle. The details of the physics will be shown in this study. The results indicate that the fuel temperature in the pool will not exceed 1200°C to avoid the water-metal reaction after failure of RHR system for 4.578 days. We find that the velocity in the bundle are much faster than outside of the bundle under the LOCA accident.dc201

Proteomic profiling of proteins associated with the rejuvenation of Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl
Background: Restoration of rooting competence is important for rejuvenation in Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl and is achieved by repeatedly grafting Sequoia shoots after 16 and 30 years of cultivation in vitro. Results: Mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis revealed three proteins that differentially accumulated in different rejuvenation stages, including oxygen-evolving enhancer protein 2 (OEE2), glycine-rich RNA-binding protein (RNP), and a thaumatin-like protein. OEE2 was found to be phosphorylated and a phosphopeptide (YEDNFDGNSNVSVMVpTPpTDK) was identified. Specifically, the protein levels of OEE2 increased as a result of grafting and displayed a higher abundance in plants during the juvenile and rejuvenated stages. Additionally, SsOEE2 displayed the highest expression levels in Sequoia shoots during the juvenile stage and less expression during the adult stage. The expression levels also steadily increased during grafting. Conclusion: Our results indicate a positive correlation between the gene and protein expression patterns of SsOEE2 and the rejuvenation process, suggesting that this gene is involved in the rejuvenation of Sequoia sempervirens
