The challenges and issues of undergraduate student retention and attainment in UK veterinary medical education
Student retention and attainment has recently been identified as a key area for development in veterinary medical education enquiry. Woodfield's research on retention and attainment across the UK disciplines has yielded some unique information about the challenges and issues of students who study veterinary medicine and related subjects. The present literature review aims to expand on Woodfield's findings and explain important issues about retention and attainment across veterinary medicine. Overall, the subject of retention and attainment in undergraduate veterinary medical education needs a great deal more empirical attention, such as data on the retention and attainment of mature and widening access students, and the effects of students being placed at remote locations during their studies. Our findings also cover some unsurprising issues: the dominance of women in a profession that is principally lead by men, the underrepresentation of black and minority ethnic (BME) students in veterinary medicine, and the effects of content overload in the veterinary medical curriculum. Based on data gathered by Woodfield and our investigation of the scholarly and gray literatures, we offer an overview of gaps in current knowledge and recommendations for further research
Changes in the Indicator Properties of Narrow Monetary Aggregates
Although many countries have abandoned monetary targeting in recent decades, monetary aggregates are still useful indicators of future economic activity. Past research has shown that, compared with other monetary aggregates and expressed in real terms, net M1 and gross M1 have traditionally provided superior leading information for output growth. Yet financial innovations and the elimination of reserve requirements over the past two decades have made it increasingly difficult for financial institutions to differentiate between demand and notice deposits, suggesting the need to re-examine the information content of narrow monetary aggregates that depend on such a distinction. Based on an analysis over a sample period from 1975Q1 to 2005Q1, the authors determine that the leading-indicator properties of the narrow monetary aggregates for output growth have shifted over time and that, since 1993, real M1+ has become a better indicator of future output growth than real gross and net M1.
Finite size effects on calorimetric cooperativity of two-state proteins
Finite size effects on the calorimetric cooperatity of the folding-unfolding
transition in two-state proteins are considered using the Go lattice models
with and without side chains. We show that for models without side chains a
dimensionless measure of calorimetric cooperativity kappa2 defined as the ratio
of the van't Hoff to calorimetric enthalpy does not depend on the number of
amino acids N. The average value of kappa2 is about 3/4 which is lower than the
experimental value kappa2=1. For models with side chains kappa2 approaches
unity as kappa2 \sim N^mu, where exponent mu=0.17. Above the critical chain
length Nc =135 these models can mimic the truly all-or-non folding-unfolding

Terahertz single pixel imaging based on a Nipkow disk
We describe a terahertz single pixel imaging system based on a Nipkow disk. Nipkow disks have been used for fast scanning imaging systems since the first experimental television was invented in 1926. In our work, a Nipkow disk with 24 scanning lines was used to provide an axial resolution of 2 mm/pixel. We also show that by implementing a microscanning technique the axial resolution can be further improved to 0.5 mm/pixel. Imaging of several objects was demonstrated to show that this simple scanning system is promising for fast and/or real time terahertz imaging applications
Inward and Outward Integral Equations and the KKR Method for Photons
In the case of electromagnetic waves it is necessary to distinguish between
inward and outward on-shell integral equations. Both kinds of equation are
derived. A correct implementation of the photonic KKR method then requires the
inward equations and it follows directly from them. A derivation of the KKR
method from a variational principle is also outlined. Rather surprisingly, the
variational KKR method cannot be entirely written in terms of surface integrals
unless permeabilities are piecewise constant. Both kinds of photonic KKR method
use the standard structure constants of the electronic KKR method and hence
allow for a direct numerical application. As a by-product, matching rules are
obtained for derivatives of fields on different sides of the discontinuity of
permeabilities.
