    Stress and mental health problem on secondary school student in Sabah

    Several studies proved there is a significant relationship among stress with mental health, depression and stress that prolonged. (Abouserie, 1994; Diane & Misty, 1997; Bojuwoye, 2002; Mahadir, Shazli Ezzat, Normah & Ponnusamy, 2004; Najib, Che Su, Zarina & Suhanim, 2005; Najeemah, 2005). The purpose of the study is to create mental health profile among students in Sabah. This research also tends to find out the relationship between stress and mental health among secondary students in Sabah. Furthermore this research also tends to find out the differences of mental health among multi-ethnic secondary school student. There is about 500 secondary students was aged mean 16.06 was taken from Sabah to do survey. Finding indicated that there is a positive significance correlation between stress with mental health (r= .731, p < .001). Results also indicate there were significant differences among ethnic groups in Sabah (F (9.490) = 4.625, p <.05). The importance of mental health issues and intervention had been discussed

    Organizational stressor of staff negative behaviors among higher education deans: a post positivist multiple case study

    Organizations and institutions today are now seeing rise of organizational stress and how it is directly contributing to the rise of financial and personal cost of mental health issues among its workers (Patty, 2016). The all important field of higher education is not spared and is also undergoing a paradigm shift, as a historically low competition industry to a sudden highly competitive industry (Otara, 2015). With these drastic changes, higher education deans are now plagued by a myriad of organizational stressors. A qualitative case study approach was used to investigated this phenomenon, encompassing the interview techniques of Patton (2002) and the validity and reliability exercises of Creswell (2014). Deans from one institution was found to encounter staff related organizational stressors which consisted of lecturer low performance, lecturer going against dean, lecturer against lecturer, lecturer negative behavior, lecturer low work ethic, and administrative staff negative work elements. This confirmed on the existence of organizational stressors among higher education deans and may be used to spur future research to reduce or eliminated this phenomenon

    Are they emotionally – socially intelligent? examining emotional-social intelligence among adolescents residing in a children’s home in the state of Sabah, Malaysia

    This study was conducted to investigate emotional-social intelligence among adolescents in a Children’s Home located in Sabah, Malaysia. A total of 49 adolescents (11 males and 38 females) aged between 12 and 18-years-old were selected through purposive sampling to participate in the study. BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version was used to collect quantitative data regarding the respondents' experiences concerning emotional and social intelligence. In general, analysis shows that emotional-social intelligence among adolescents in this Children’s Home was reported to be low. No difference in emotional-social intelligence across gender and age groups was found. Stress management skill was the only domain found to be different between male and female adolescents. There were no major relations among emotional-social intelligence features. It was found that only adolescents’ skills of interpersonal and adaptability was moderately positively correlated. Information found from this study is deemed meaningful for the purpose of planning an intervention program to empower emotional intelligence among adolescent residing in children’s' homes

    Higher authority organizational stressors among higher education deans: A multiple case study

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify higher authority organizational stressors encountered by higher education deans. Design/methodology/approach – This current research employed a qualitative approach utilizing a contextual paradigm with a multiple case study methodology. Findings – Out of ten investigated deans in a public higher education institution in Malaysia, nine reported experiences of organizational stressor elements arising from higher authority. Three non-overlapping subthemes were systematically discovered. Practical implications – Successful identification of these higher authority organizational stressors has implications for higher education management policies. Policies that reduce or eliminate these stressors may create a positive and progressive environment for deans and the higher education field. Originality/value – This study will thus serve to promote a deeper understanding of higher authority organizational stressors encountered by higher education deans

    Self-esteem, extraversion personality, and academic achievement among children from intact family and orphans

    The aim of this study is to determine the differences of self-esteem, extraversion personality, and academic achievement among the children from intact families and children who are orphans, and to determine the relationship between self-esteem and extraversion personality with academic achievement among children from intact family and children who are orphans. Data was collected from 70 children, which consisted of 36 children from intact family and 34 orphans, with a mean age 14.47 years old. This study was carried out in Sabah, Malaysia. Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was used to measure the variables in the study. The result showed that there was a significant difference of total self-esteem and its subscales (general self and School – Academic), extraversion personality, and academic achievement between children from intact family and children who are orphans. The result also showed that there was no significant relationship between self-esteems and extraversion personality with academic achievement

    Pembangunan dan ujian modul kecerdasan emosi kemahiran adaptasi telah direka bentuk untuk mengenal pasti skor kecerdasan emosi sosial pekerja wanita di Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Modul ini dibina berdasarkan komponen kemahiran penyesuaian kecerdasan emosi sosial seperti yang terdapat dalam Model Bar-On. Komponen penyesuaian model Bar-On terdiri daripada Pengujian Realiti, Fleksibiliti dan Penyelesaian Masalah. Ketiga-tiga komponen ini penting untuk melihat sejauh mana kecekapan kecerdasan emosi sosial dalam diri individu. Pembangunan Modul Kecerdasan Emosi Kemahiran Adaptasi Situasi COVID-19 dalam Kalangan Wanita Bekerja di Universiti Malaysia Sabah adalah pendekatan yang boleh digunakan untuk melatih pekerja wanita supaya fleksibel dalam kehidupan mereka dan mereka membawa. Pemahaman terbina dalam kesan modul yang digunakan sudah tentu dapat membantu wanita bekerja untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan situasi semasa yang melanda. Modul ini merupakan satu inisiatif yang dibangunkan khusus untuk memberi ruang kepada wanita untuk melatih diri menghadapi situasi. Modul ini dibangunkan bermula dengan perbincangan, penulisan draf kemudian pemurnian draf sebelum akhirnya diserahkan kepada pakar untuk dinilai. Kajian ini dijalankan menggunakan reka bentuk deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti tahap kesahan pembinaan dan ujian modul kecerdasan emosi kemahiran adaptasi situasi COVID-19 dalam kalangan pekerja wanita di Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Ujian kesahan modul tersebut melibatkan tiga penilai pakar yang terdiri daripada pensyarah IPTA yang mempunyai kelayakan dan kepakaran dalam bidang psikologi dan kaunseling. Seorang pakar bersetuju bahawa modul ini boleh dilaksanakan berdasarkan tahap kesahan keseluruhan 87.3%. Nilai Alpha Cronbach juga tinggi. Oleh itu, secara tidak langsung modul ini sesuai digunakan kepada kakitangan wanita di Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Melalui intervensi modul ini tentunya berguna dan boleh dijadikan panduan apabila menghadapi masalah yang sama pada masa hadapan. Malah, ia boleh dijadikan asas dalam merangka (blueprint) program atau aktiviti bukan sahaja untuk pekerja wanita di UMS tetapi juga wanita di organisasi lain

    The development and testing of the adaptation skills emotional intelligence module was designed to identify the social emotional intelligence scores of female workers at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. This module was built on the component of social emotional intelligence adaptive skills as found in the Bar-On Model. The adaptive components of Bar-On model consist of Reality Testing, Flexibility and Problem Solving. These three components are important for looking at the extent of the efficiency of social emotional intelligence in individuals. Development of the COVID-19 Situational Adaptation Skills Emotional Intelligence Module among Working Women at Universiti Malaysia Sabah is an approach that can be used to train women workers to be flexible in their life and they carrier. The built -in understanding of the effects of the modules used can certainly help working women to adapt to the current situation of the pendemic. This module is an initiative developed specifically to provide space for women to train themselves to deal with situations. The module was developed starting with discussion, draft writing then draft refinement before finally being submitted to an expert for evaluation. The study was conducted using a descriptive design aimed at identifying the level of validity of the construction and testing of the COVID-19 situational adaptation skills emotional intelligence module among female workes at the University Malaysia Sabah. The validity test of the module involved three expert evaluators consisting of lecturers from public universities with qualifications and expertise in psychology and counseling. An expert agree that this module is feasible based on the 87.3% overall validity level. The Cronbach's Alpha value is also high. Therefore, indirectly, this module is suitable to be used to female staff at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Through an intervention of this module is certainly useful and can be used as a guide when facing similar problems in the future. In fact, it can be used as a basis in drafting (blueprint) programs or activities not only for women employees at UMS but also women in other organizations

    Why i trust my father? : in the eyes of malaysian adolescents

    This study aims to investigate how much both son and daughter trust their father and what are the underlying reasons they trust their father. The results revealed five main reasons why Malaysian adolescents trust their father. Those reasons are related to the role of father, father-child relationship, father’s characteristics, father’s nurturing nature and father’s attitude and behavior. A total of 1022 students (males = 241, females = 781) from one of public university in Sabah, Malaysia participated in the study. The participants completed open-ended questionnaires developed by Kim (2008), asking how much the adolescents trust their father, and the reasons why they trust their father. The data was analysed by using the indigenous psychology method proposed by [1] Findings of this study revealed the pattern of trust towards father for both Malaysian male and female adolescents. The results contributed new information about Malaysian adolescents’ trust towards their father form the indigenous context. The implications of finding will be discussed

    A Conceptual Paper on Organizational Stressors Among Higher Education Deans

    This is a conceptual paper to study the effects of organizational stressors that may impede the psychological, physiological and behavioral-interpersonal wellbeing of an organizational member. The study reviews literatures on what effects will general stress alter and degrade the psychological, physiological and behavioral-interpersonal wellbeing of an individual exposed to stressors. The final part of this study’s analysis is what constitutes as organizational stressors among studies that focuses specifically on higher education deans. The factors outlined in the paper were analyzed using the theoretical framework of Managerial Stress Cycle (Gmelch, 1991) and Administrative Stress Index (Gmelch, 1982). A conceptual integrative model was developed in regard to these two frameworks. Both these models are appropriate for this inquiry because, it allows the reader to understand what are the effects of organizational stressors towards psychological and physiological health and its consequences. A number of databases such as ebcohost, springer link, science direct, Jstor and emerald were used to acquire literature on the topics. Conclusions from the literature states that health ailments stemming from stressors are evident and may function as a catalyst towards more dangerous diseases. Higher education dean’s experiences with organizational stressors also seem to be evolving, incorporating new contemporary issues not seen in the past
