The relationship between psychological distress and adolescent polydrug use
Polydrug use is relatively common among adolescents. Psychological distress is associated with the use of specific drugs, and may be uniquely associated with polydrug use. The purpose of this study was to test the association of psychological distress with polydrug use using a large adolescent sample. The sample consisted of 10,273 students aged 12-17 years from the State of Victoria, Australia. Participants completed frequency measures of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, inhalant, and other drug use in the past 30 days, and psychological distress. Control variables included age, gender, family socioeconomic status, school suspensions, academic failure, cultural background, and peer drug use. Drug-use classes were derived using latent-class analysis, then the association of psychological distress and controls with drug-use classes was modeled using multinomial ordinal regression. There were 3 distinct classes of drug use: no drug use (47.7%), mainly alcohol use (44.1%), and polydrug use (8.2%). Independent of all controls, psychological distress was higher in polydrug users and alcohol users, relative to nondrug users, and polydrug users reported more psychological distress than alcohol users. Psychological distress was most characteristic of polydrug users, and targeted prevention outcomes may be enhanced by a collateral focus on polydrug use and depression and/or anxiety
Long-term evaluation of cantilevered versus fixedâfixed resin-bonded fixed partial dentures for missing maxillary incisors
© 2016 Elsevier LtdObjectives To evaluate the long-term longevity and patient-reported outcomes of two-unit cantilevered (CL2) and three-unit fixedâfixed (FF3) resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs) for the replacement of a maxillary permanent incisor. Materials and methods Twenty-eight subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a CL2 or FF3 RBFPD placed by one operator. Prosthesis longevity was determined by clinical examination and history. Success was defined as absence of complications requiring intervention and survival as retention of the original prosthesis in mouth. Subjectsâ satisfaction was assessed using visual analogue scale (VAS) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) using Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49). Outcomes were analysed with t-test/MannâWhitney U test, chi-square and log-rank test at significance level α = 0.05. Results Twenty-two subjects were reviewed. Thirteen of fifteen CL2 and ten of fourteen FF3 RBFPDs were examined (79.3 percent response rate) with a mean service life of 216.5 ± 20.8 months. All CL2 RBFPDs survived with no complications while only 10 percent of FF3 experienced no complications and only 50 percent of them survived (both P = 0.000). CL2 had a significantly better success and survival rate than FF3 (P = 0.000 and P = 0.009, respectively). There was no significant difference in subjectsâ satisfaction and OHRQoL apart from CL2 group subjects had a higher satisfaction in cleaning of the prosthesis (84.1 ± 13.6) than FF3 group (72.6 ± 11.7) (P = 0.05). Conclusions Two-unit cantilevered RBFPDs were observed to have a significantly better success and survival than the FF3 design for the replacement of a maxillary incisor. Band Formation during Gaseous Diffusion in Aerogels
We study experimentally how gaseous HCl and NH_3 diffuse from opposite sides
of and react in silica aerogel rods with porosity of 92 % and average pore size
of about 50 nm. The reaction leads to solid NH_4Cl, which is deposited in thin
sheet-like structures. We present a numerical study of the phenomenon. Due to
the difference in boundary conditions between this system and those usually
studied, we find the sheet-like structures in the aerogel to differ
significantly from older studies. The influence of random nucleation centers

A mobile health app for the collection of functional outcomes after inpatient stroke rehabilitation: Pilot randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Monitoring the functional status of poststroke patients after they transition home is significant for rehabilitation. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies may provide an opportunity to reach and follow patients post discharge. However, the feasibility and validity of functional assessments administered by mHealth technologies are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, validity, and reliability of functional assessments administered through the videoconference function of a mobile phone-based app compared with administration through the telephone function in poststroke patients after rehabilitation hospitalization.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a rehabilitation hospital in Southeast China. Participants were randomly assigned to either a videoconference follow-up (n=60) or a telephone follow-up (n=60) group. We measured the functional status of participants in each group at 2-week and 3-month follow-up periods. Half the participants in each group were followed by face-to-face home visit assessments as the gold standard. Validity was assessed by comparing any score differences between videoconference follow-up and home visit assessments, as well as telephone follow-up and home visit assessments. Reliability was assessed by computing agreements between videoconference follow-up and home visit assessments, as well as telephone follow-up and home visit assessments. Feasibility was evaluated by the levels of completion, satisfaction, comfort, and confidence in the 2 groups.
RESULTS: Scores obtained from the videoconference follow-up were similar to those of the home visit assessment. However, most scores collected from telephone administration were higher than those of the home visit assessment. The agreement between videoconference follow-up and home visit assessments was higher than that between telephone follow-up and home visit assessments at all follow-up periods. In the telephone follow-up group, completion rates were 95% and 82% at 2-week and 3-month follow-up points, respectively. In the videoconference follow-up group, completion rates were 95% and 80% at 2-week and 3-month follow-up points, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The videoconference follow-up assessment of functional status demonstrates higher validity and reliability, as well as higher confidence and satisfaction perceived by patients, than the telephone assessment. The videoconference assessment provides an efficient means of assessing functional outcomes of patients after hospital discharge. This method provides a novel solution for clinical trials requiring longitudinal assessments.

Fronto-cerebellar connectivity mediating cognitive processing speed
Processing speed is an important construct in understanding cognition. This study was aimed to control task specificity for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processing speed. Forty young adult subjects performed attention tasks of two modalities (auditory and visual) and two levels of task rules (compatible and incompatible). Block-design fMRI captured BOLD signals during the tasks. Thirteen regions of interest were defined with reference to publicly available activation maps for processing speed tasks. Cognitive speed was derived from task reaction times, which yielded six sets of connectivity measures. Mixed-effect LASSO regression revealed six significant paths suggestive of a cerebello-frontal network predicting the cognitive speed. Among them, three are long range (two fronto-cerebellar, one cerebello-frontal), and three are short range (fronto-frontal, cerebello-cerebellar, and cerebello-thalamic). The long-range connections are likely to relate to cognitive control, and the short-range connections relate to rule-based stimulus-response processes. The revealed neural network suggests that automaticity, acting on the task rules and interplaying with effortful top-down attentional control, accounts for cognitive speed
Spherical and planar three-dimensional anti-de Sitter black holes
The technique of dimensional reduction was used in a recent paper (Zanchin et
al, Phys. Rev. D66, 064022,(2002)) where a three-dimensional (3D)
Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory was built from the usual four-dimensional (4D)
Einstein-Maxwell-Hilbert action for general relativity. Starting from a class
of 4D toroidal black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes
several 3D black holes were obtained and studied in such a context. In the
present work we choose a particular case of the 3D action which presents
Maxwell field, dilaton field and an extra scalar field, besides gravity field
and a negative cosmological constant, and obtain new 3D static black hole
solutions whose horizons may have spherical or planar topology. We show that
there is a 3D static spherically symmetric solution analogous to the 4D
Reissner-Nordstr\"om-AdS black hole, and obtain other new 3D black holes with
planar topology. From the static spherical solutions, new rotating 3D black

Gate-Controlled Ionization and Screening of Cobalt Adatoms on a Graphene Surface
We describe scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements performed on
individual cobalt (Co) atoms deposited onto backgated graphene devices. We find
that Co adatoms on graphene can be ionized by either the application of a
global backgate voltage or by the application of a local electric field from a
scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. Large screening clouds are observed to
form around Co adatoms ionized in this way, and we observe that some intrinsic
graphene defects display a similar behavior. Our results provide new insight
into charged impurity scattering in graphene, as well as the possibility of
using graphene devices as chemical sensors.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Writing and detecting topological charges in exfoliated FeGeTe
FeGeTe is a promising two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW)
magnet for practical applications, given its magnetic properties. These include
Curie temperatures above room temperature, and topological spin textures (TST
or both merons and skyrmions), responsible for a pronounced anomalous Hall
effect (AHE) and its topological counterpart (THE), which can be harvested for
spintronics. Here, we show that both the AHE and THE can be amplified
considerably by just adjusting the thickness of exfoliated FeGeTe,
with THE becoming observable even in zero magnetic field due to a field-induced
unbalance in topological charges. Using a complementary suite of techniques,
including electronic transport, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, and
micromagnetic simulations, we reveal the emergence of substantial coercive
fields upon exfoliation, which are absent in the bulk, implying
thickness-dependent magnetic interactions that affect the TST. We detected a
``magic" thickness 30 nm where the formation of TST is maximized,
inducing large magnitudes for the topological charge density ( cm), and the concomitant anomalous ( cm) and topological ( cm) Hall resistivities at ~ 120 K. These values for
and are higher than those
found in magnetic topological insulators and, so far, the largest reported for
2D magnets. The hitherto unobserved THE under zero magnetic field could provide
a platform for the writing and electrical detection of TST aiming at
