Re-viewing and Reparations in Olivia Laing’s Funny Weather.
Olivia Laing assembles a decade’s worth of her writing about art and culture in this rich collection of essays which are loosely grouped by category with little chronological constraint. Her own artistic curation creates a temporal doubling, a dialogue between and within essays, and a meta commentary on political, environmental, social and cultural emergencies. Composed on both sides of the Atlantic during the austerity decade 2011-2020, her work addresses these issues and their interrelated resonance over the long twentieth century. Reading these pieces in conversation with each other unmoors them from their initial publication contexts to create a larger, entangled embodiment of actors, canvases and environment in the broadest sense of these terms. In this sweeping cultural interrogation of the period, Laing complicates her evaluations by engaging in paranoid yet reparative readings in homage to Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. By ‘gathering information’ and ‘tracing links’, Laing allows the minoritised and excluded to speak through original acts of creation and expression and, through her animated entangled (re)creation, addresses the swelling forces of late capitalism
Review of Think Big with Think Alouds: A Three-step Planning Process That Develops Strategic Readers
In Think Big with Think Alouds: A Three-step Planning Process That Develops Strategic Readers (2017), Molly K. Ness provides classroom teachers with a detailed three-step process for developing think aloud procedures during classroom literacy instruction. The book assists teachers in identifying stopping points in narrative and expository text. Ness also includes multiple scripted think alouds with comprehensive explanations for both narrative and expository text. Additionally, practical tips for promoting student adoption of higher order thinking skills are provided in the form of sentence starters and strategy symbols. The procedures outline in Think Big with Think Alouds will empower classroom teachers to incorporate effective tools for facilitating reading comprehension skills across grade levels
The Power of Print: Supporting Emergent Readers Vocabulary Growth
Vocabulary instructional practices are grounded in oral language development, neglecting the role print plays enhancing student learning. This article offers suggestions for early childhood educators to reconceptualize their thinking of print exposure with supporting vocabulary development. Suggestions of ways to incorporate print exposure into daily classroom routines are provided
Overview of Cancer Detection Using CRISPRCas13
Most cancers have been shown to alter microRNA expression, so the development of platforms that are able to detect extracellular miRNA has become a promising new field in cancer research. CRISPR-Cas13 systems are guided by RNA and are used by prokaryotes like bacteria to have immunity against things like bacteriophages. This ability of Cas13 to target RNA makes it a potential new technology in cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. My research will review recent studies regarding the potential of Cas 13 based systems to create minimally invasive diagnostic tests for cancers in humans. The studies reviewed will evaluate the efficacy of Cas13 as a detector of miRNA and investigate improvements to specific aspects of Cas13 biosensors, like specificity and sensitivity. The result of past research demonstrates that there are multiple functional Cas13-based diagnostic systems that are able to detect very small amounts of miRNA with incredible specificity
Using Multimodal Virtual Instruction to Build Preservice Teachers\u27 Knowledge of Dyslexia
Increasing awareness about screening and instructional interventions for students with dyslexia is a necessary component of P-12 teacher preparation. Disparities in reading achievement for students with disabilities, including those with dyslexia, is evidenced in lower literacy testing scores as well as lower high school graduation rates for those with documented disabilities when compared to typical developing peers. Preservice teachers, however, continue to struggle with understanding, identifying, and providing targeted literacy instruction to remediate reading challenges for students with dyslexia. Emerging data on the impact of the COVID-19 school closures on lags in student’s reading attainment, further solidifies the need for teacher preparation programs to prepare preservice teachers to implement best practices for supporting students with dyslexia. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine the impact of asynchronous online learning modules on preservice teacher’s knowledge of dyslexia. Results indicate that preservice teachers who learn via online sources such as podcasts, infographics, and educational games, statistically increase their knowledge of dyslexia and confidence to work with students. Recommendations for programmatic change and inclusion of online learning about dyslexia for teacher preparation programs are suggested
Davids Chambre, R.
