Long term condition monitoring of tapestries using image correlation
Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to extract non-contact full-field three-dimensional displacement and in-plane strains from an historic tapestries. A DIC-based approach is devised that allows the effect of RH variations on a tapestry to be quantified. A historical tapestry has been monitored in a closely controlled environment and in the natural environment. The results revealed that very small variations in RH can have significant effects on strain. An automated long term monitoring approach has been devised to allow strain data to be extracted in real time from tapestries in remote locations. The results show that DIC provides better understanding of the effect of RH fluctuations on strain which will ultimately lead to more insight into the degradation process of historical tapestries. A novel approach to isolating improved industrial interspecific wine yeasts using chromosomal mutations as potential markers for increased fitness
Wine yeast breeding programs utilizing interspecific hybridization deliver cost-effective tools to winemakers looking to differentiate their wines through the development of new wine styles. The addition of a non-Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome to a commercial wine yeast can generate novel phenotypes ranging from wine flavor and aroma diversity to improvements in targeted fermentation traits. In the current study we utilized a novel approach to screen isolates from an evolving population for increased fitness in a S. cerevisiae Ă S. uvarum interspecific hybrid previously generated to incorporate the targeted phenotype of lower volatile acidity production. Sequential grape-juice fermentations provided a selective environment from which to screen isolates. Chromosomal markers were used in a novel approach to identify isolates with potential increased fitness. A strain with increased fitness relative to its parents was isolated from an early timepoint in the evolving population, thereby minimizing the risk of introducing collateral mutations and potentially undesirable phenotypes. The evolved strain retained the desirable fermentation trait of reduced volatile acidity production, along with other winemaking traits of importance while exhibiting improved fermentation kinetics.Jennifer R. Establishing and Prioritising Research Questions for the Treatment of Alopecia Areata: The Alopecia Areata Priority Setting Partnership
BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is a common hair loss disorder that results in patchy to complete hair loss. Many uncertainties exist around the most effective treatments for this condition. OBJECTIVES: To identify uncertainties in alopecia areata management and treatment that are important to both service users (people with hair loss, carers and relatives) and healthcare professionals. METHODS: An alopecia areata priority setting partnership was established between patients, their carers and relatives, and healthcare professionals to identify the most important uncertainties in alopecia areata. The methodology of the James Lind Alliance was followed to ensure a balanced, inclusive and transparent process. RESULTS: In total 2747 treatment uncertainties were submitted by 912 participants, of which 1012 uncertainties relating to alopecia areata (and variants) were analyzed. Questions were combined into "indicative uncertainties" following a structured format. A series of ranking exercises further reduced this list to a top 25 that were taken to a final prioritization workshop where the top 10 priorities were agreed. CONCLUSIONS: We present the top 10 research priorities for alopecia areata to guide researchers and funding bodies to support studies important to both patients and clinicians. Oviposition Preference and Offspring Performance In Container Breeding Mosquitoes: Evaluating the Effects of Organic Compounds and Laboratory Colonisation
1. The preferenceâperformance hypothesis (PPH) predicts that organisms lacking parental care should oviposit in habitats that optimise offspring performance. Preferenceâperformance relationships were investigated for the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus Skuse) and the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus Say) (Diptera: Culicidae), two medically important container-breeding species, in response to an organic chemical blend mimicking decaying plant matter. Additionally, the effects of long-term laboratory colonisation of Cx. quinquefasciatus using wild and laboratory strains were evaluated.
2. Oviposition bioassays were conducted by releasing gravid mosquitoes into field enclosures with automobile tires containing low and high concentrations of the chemical blend, and water controls. The offspring were then reared in water collected from the tires in which they were deposited.
3. Aedes albopictus and wild Cx. quinquefasciatus laid more eggs in the chemical blend than water controls but did not differentiate between the low and high concentrations. Conversely, laboratory Cx. quinquefasciatus only preferred the high concentration to the low concentration. No statistical associations between oviposition preference and larval survival were found, as the chemical blend did not affect survivorship of either species.
4. The oviposition preference for the chemical blend over water controls suggests that both species oviposit in the best available resource environment, but further studies are needed before conclusions regarding preferenceâperformance relationships can be drawn.
5. It was found that long-term laboratory colonisation affects the oviposition behaviour in Cx. quinquefasciatus, suggesting that behavioural studies on laboratory strains are not always applicable to wild populations
Can induced gravity isotropize Bianchi I, V, or IX Universes?
We analyze if Bianchi I, V, and IX models in the Induced Gravity (IG) theory
can evolve to a Friedmann--Roberson--Walker (FRW) expansion due to the
non--minimal coupling of gravity and the scalar field. The analytical results
that we found for the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory are now applied to the IG theory
which has ( being the square ratio of the Higgs to
Planck mass) in a cosmological era in which the IG--potential is not
significant. We find that the isotropization mechanism crucially depends on the
value of . Its smallness also permits inflationary solutions. For the
Bianch V model inflation due to the Higgs potential takes place afterwads, and
subsequently the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) ends with an effective FRW

A consensus guide to capturing the ability to inhibit actions and impulsive behaviors in the stop-signal task
Growth and properties of strained VOx thin films with controlled stoichiometry
We have succeeded in growing epitaxial films of rocksalt VOx on MgO(001)
substrates. The oxygen content as a function of oxygen flux was determined
using 18O2-RBS and the vanadium valence using XAS. The upper and lower
stoichiometry limits found are similar to the ones known for bulk material
(0.8<x<1.3). From the RHEED oscillation period a large number of vacancies for
both vanadium and oxygen were deduced, i.e. ~16% for stoichiometric VO. These
numbers are, surprisingly, very similar to those for bulk material and
consequently quite strain-insensitive. XAS measurements reveal that the
vacancies give rise to strong low symmetry ligand fields to be present. The
electrical conductivity of the films is much lower than the conductivity of
bulk samples which we attribute to a decrease in the direct overlap between t2g
orbitals in the coherently strained layers. The temperature dependence of the

Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Cures Adenosine Deaminase 2 Deficiency: Report on 30 Patients.
Deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2) is an inherited inborn error of immunity, characterized by autoinflammation (recurrent fever), vasculopathy (livedo racemosa, polyarteritis nodosa, lacunar ischemic strokes, and intracranial hemorrhages), immunodeficiency, lymphoproliferation, immune cytopenias, and bone marrow failure (BMF). Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) blockade is the treatment of choice for the vasculopathy, but often fails to reverse refractory cytopenia. We aimed to study the outcome of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in patients with DADA2.
We conducted a retrospective study on the outcome of HCT in patients with DADA2. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS).
Thirty DADA2 patients from 12 countries received a total of 38 HCTs. The indications for HCT were BMF, immune cytopenia, malignancy, or immunodeficiency. Median age at HCT was 9 years (range: 2-28 years). The conditioning regimens for the final transplants were myeloablative (n = 20), reduced intensity (n = 8), or non-myeloablative (n = 2). Donors were HLA-matched related (n = 4), HLA-matched unrelated (n = 16), HLA-haploidentical (n = 2), or HLA-mismatched unrelated (n = 8). After a median follow-up of 2 years (range: 0.5-16 years), 2-year OS was 97%, and 2-year GvHD-free relapse-free survival was 73%. The hematological and immunological phenotypes resolved, and there were no new vascular events. Plasma ADA2 enzyme activity normalized in 16/17 patients tested. Six patients required more than one HCT.
HCT was an effective treatment for DADA2, successfully reversing the refractory cytopenia, as well as the vasculopathy and immunodeficiency.
HCT is a definitive cure for DADA2 with > 95% survival
