Rigorous criterion for reentrance in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated Bethe lattices

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated Bethe lattices is exactly solved with the help of decoration-iteration transformation and exact recursion relations. It is shown that the model under investigation exhibits reentrant phase transitions whenever a sufficiently high coordination number of the underlying Bethe lattice is considered.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, presented at 14th Czech and Slovak Conference on Magnetism 6.-9. Mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model with uniaxial and biaxial single-ion anisotropy on Bethe lattice

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on the Bethe lattice with both uniaxial as well as biaxial single-ion anisotropy terms is exactly solved by combining star-triangle and triangle-star mapping transformations with exact recursion relations. Magnetic properties (magnetization, phase diagrams and compensation phenomenon) are investigated in detail. The particular attention is focused on the effect of uniaxial and biaxial single-ion anisotropies that basically influence the magnetic behavior of the spin-1 atoms.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Central European Journal of Physic

While descriptive evidence suggests that deployment in the Global War on Terrorism is associated with adverse mental health, the causal effect of combat is not well established. Using data drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we exploit exogenous variation in deployment assignment and find that soldiers deployed to combat zones where they engage in frequent enemy firefight or witness allied or civilian deaths are at substantially increased risk for suicidal ideation, psychological counseling, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our estimates imply lower-bound health care costs of 1.5to1.5 to 2.7 billion for combat-induced PTSD.military service, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression

ON THE WAKE STRUCTURES OF FLOW AROUND DEFORMING AND VIBRATING BODIES

This thesis concerns the study of Fluid-Structure interaction phenomena among deforming and (non-deforming) vibrating objects under unsteady fluid fl ow exposures. This multi-physical phenomenon is widely encountered in real-life situations and therefore it is of significant importance to understand the underlying physics. The trend is that both industrial and research facilities aim for developing methods that treat this complex and multi-disciplinary problem with high accuracy and also sufficient efficiency. Time-domain simulations, that is the dominating prediction tool within the FSI-community although frequency-domain representation is still used to some extent, have been integrated with two different structural models that model the solid objects. For the vibrating rigid object an Immersed Boundary (IB) method based on the use of Cartesian mesh is used to represent the solid object by using momentum source that enforce the required boundary condition. The deforming object, on the other hand, is modelled by a three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) formulation based on collocated mesh formulation. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation provides the deformation of the object which is solved in conjunction with the fl uid and solid solvers. Further, a partitioned FSI-approach based on strong coupling strategy assures for reliable flow and solid domain quantities. The time-dependent and unsteady fl uid flow is predicted based on Implicit Large Eddy Simulations (ILES) which becomes a prerequisite in order to resolve flow processes involving large-scale structures with sufficient accuracy. In particular, separation processes, vortex shedding and possibly vortex-pairing are flow phenomena of such kind that typically are encountered when the flow around an object enforces the body to be deformed or displaced, which in turn, alters the character of the flow structures. In the context of deformable- and rigid body motions, this study is especially focused in the near-wake (instantaneously) behaviour of fl ow structures in conjunction with dependency of wake topologies when the unsteady wake fl ow generates unsteady loading on the object. The variations in response dynamics of the objects are studied in parallel and a direct/indirect coupling is made in the object-wake dynamics in order to better understand the complex two-way FSI phenomenon. In the analyses, particular post-processing tools for the fl uid- flow, such as Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) have served as a toolbox. It is shown that very useful conclusions can be drawn and hence, attribute these findings to relevant mechanisms underlying the FSI problem

Essays on the Aggregate Burden of Alcohol Abuse

This dissertation attempts to uncover the causal relationship between alcohol abuse and both income growth and crime. These two research questions are investigated in three essays: Essay I investigates the relationship between alcohol abuse and income growth in the United States; Essay II examines the impact of alcohol abuse on income growth at the international level; Essay III investigates the effect of alcohol abuse on crime in the united states. Essay I of this dissertation uses state level data from the United States for the period 1970-1998 to estimate the impact of alcohol abuse on income growth by utilizing per capita beer consumption as the measure of alcohol abuse. Results suggest that, even though generally small, there is a negative relationship between alcohol abuse and income growth once the endogeneity between income growth and per capita beer consumption is addressed by utilizing levels of excise alcohol taxes and the Minimum Drinking Age Law of 21 as instruments. These results indirectly favor the previous research on two dimensions: First, alcohol abuse generates a significant burden on the economy; Second, increases in excise alcohol taxes would be efficient in terms of income growth. Essay II of this dissertation uses data from 72 countries for the period 1960-1995 to estimate the impact of alcohol abuse on income growth by utilizing per capita beer, wine, liquor, and total ethanol consumption as the measures of alcohol abuse. Results suggest that, even though generally small, there is a negative significant relationship between per capita beer consumption and income growth once the endogeneity between income growth and per capita beer consumption is addressed with system GMM dynamic panel estimators. These results show that per capita beer consumption is the medium of alcohol abuse not only in the United States, but also around the world. Moreover, these results favor the previous research on the fact that alcohol abuse generates a significant burden on economies. Essay III of this dissertation uses state level data from the United States for the period 1982-2000 to investigate the relationship between crime and alcohol abuse by utilizing per capita beer consumption as the measure of alcohol abuse. Potential endogeneity between per capita beer consumption and crime is addressed by using excise beer taxes and alcohol control measures as instruments. Results show that alcohol abuse seems to have a positive impact overall on the crime rate. Nevertheless, the effect is not uniform among different crime types. In the case of property crime types, results suggest that alcohol abuse plays a more important role in crime types that require a lesser degree of organization and more spontaneity (i.e., larceny theft versus burglary and motor vehicle theft). In the case of violent crime types, results suggest that the impact of alcohol abuse is more pressing in non-murder crime types versus murder. These results have policy implications: excise alcohol taxes and alcohol control policies may play a role in reducing certain crime types, which are larceny theft, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, but not the other crime types, which are burglary, motor vehicle theft, and murder

openExploring the causes of corporate financial distress has been a topic of extensive discussion and research in the field of finance. Over the years, scholars and experts have dedicated their efforts to unraveling the intricacies behind financial struggles faced by businesses. The enduring interest in this subject can be attributed to the profound consequences that corporate financial distress can bring. When a company finds itself in a state of financial distress, it often marks a critical turning point that could lead to insolvency or even bankruptcy. This represents the ultimate failure of the company and has wide-ranging impacts that go beyond its immediate boundaries. Employees are affected by potential job losses, stakeholders face financial losses, connected companies may experience disruptions in their operations, and the overall economy can suffer. The costs associated with corporate financial distress are substantial and can take different forms. Direct costs include expenses related to legal proceedings, asset liquidation, and settling outstanding debts. Indirect costs can arise from the erosion of the company's reputation, diminished investor confidence, restricted access to credit, and the ripple effect felt throughout the supply chain. Given the prevalence and far-reaching consequences of corporate financial distress, researchers and experts have delved into the topic with great fervor. Their aim is to develop models, methodologies, and strategies that can help identify early warning signs of financial distress and enable proactive measures to be taken. By doing so, they seek to protect companies from the brink of failure and promote stability and growth in the broader economy. The study of corporate financial distress has yielded valuable insights into the various factors that contribute to these challenges. Researchers have examined aspects such as poor financial management practices, ineffective governance structures, unfavorable economic conditions, industry-specific challenges, and vulnerabilities unique to individual companies. Ultimately, the research conducted in this field not only sheds light on the causes and consequences of corporate financial distress but also strives to provide guidance for companies, investors, and policymakers. By understanding the dynamics of financial distress, stakeholders can make informed decisions, implement preventive measures, and contribute to the resilience and success of businesses in the face of adversity.Exploring the causes of corporate financial distress has been a topic of extensive discussion and research in the field of finance.
