    Stem Cell-Derived Human Striatal Progenitors Innervate Striatal Targets and Alleviate Sensorimotor Deficit in a Rat Model of Huntington Disease

    Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited late-onset neurological disorder characterized by progressive neuronal loss and disruption of cortical and basal ganglia circuits. Cell replacement using human embryonic stem cells may offer the opportunity to repair the damaged circuits and significantly ameliorate disease conditions. Here, we showed that in-vitro-differentiated human striatal progenitors undergo maturation and integrate into host circuits upon intra-striatal transplantation in a rat model of HD. By combining graft-specific immunohistochemistry, rabies virus-mediated synaptic tracing, and ex vivo electrophysiology, we showed that grafts can extend projections to the appropriate target structures, including the globus pallidus, the subthalamic nucleus, and the substantia nigra, and receive synaptic contact from both host and graft cells with 6.6 ± 1.6 inputs cell per transplanted neuron. We have also shown that transplants elicited a significant improvement in sensory-motor tasks up to 2 months post-transplant further supporting the therapeutic potential of this approach

The second order rate constants (4 +/- 1) x 10(6), (2.8 +/- 0.5) x 10(5), and (1.5 +/- 1) x 10(5) M-1 s(-1) were determined for IMD, THIA and ACT, respectively. The absorption spectra of the organic intermediates formed after CO3 center dot- is approximately equal to attack to IMD is in line with those reported for alpha-aminoalkyl radicals. A reaction mechanism involving an initial charge transfer from the amidine nitrogen of the insecticides to CO3 center dot- is proposed and further supported by the identified reaction products. The pyridine moiety of the insecticides remains unaffected until nicotinic acid is formed. CO3 center dot- radical reactivity towards IMD, ACT, and THIA is low compared to that of HO center dot radicals, excited triplet states, and O-1(2), and is therefore little effective in depleting neonicotinoid insecticides.     Insight on the fundamentals of advanced oxidation processes. Role and review of the determination methods of reactive oxygen species

    Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have known increased application to treat wastewaters containing recalcitrant compounds that are hardly degraded by conventional technologies. AOPs are characterized by the formation of strong oxidants such as hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anions, hydroperoxyl radicals and singlet oxygen, which react with the contaminant, contributing to its degradation. This paper provides an overview of the determination methods of reactive oxygen species, ROS, in the application of AOPs; the methods developed in the available literature for the detection and quantification of ROS are reviewed as a first step in the assessment and detailed description of the mechanisms involved in the oxidation reactions, focusing on the critical analysis of the main strengths and weaknesses presented by the probe molecules employed in the evaluated studies.This research was supported by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO/SPAIN) and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the project CTQ2011-25262

    From movement to industry : organic agriculture in British Columbia

    This thesis explores how organic standards have shaped the thought and practice of organic agriculture in British Columbia. While organic agriculture is often viewed as offering an alternative to the unsustainable trajectory of conventional agriculture, this thesis argues that commercialized organic agriculture as it currently exists offers only a minor potential for food system reform. Organic farming pioneers who originally came together at the grassroots in BC aspired to enact radical agrarian ideals that could counteract the social and environmental ills wrought by decades of adherence to conventional agriculture. By creating organic certification schemes that granted mainstream market access to organic producers, these farmers attempted to promote their ideals by transforming organic agriculture from a marginal fringe movement into a formal capitalist enterprise. While commercialization has reaped benefits, at the same time the standardization of organic agriculture that is prerequisite to sought-after market access has considerably undermined progress towards the ’alternative’ goals advocated by organic farmers I interviewed. Issues I explore throughout show that the operationalization of ’organic’ via codified certification standards has given way over time to a gradual erosion of organic principles. I argue that despite the efforts to impart knowledge of, and enforce adherence to, ’pure’ notions of organic practice through organic standards, the pressure of market forces instead causes growers to sacrifice organic ideals in the name of taking measures to boost productivity instead. As organic agriculture is integrated ever more deeply into regimes of certification and standardization required for participation in the market, it has become more and more akin to the very conventional agricultural paradigm it was originally intended to oppose. In sum, although the organic market has grown with remarkable speed in recent years, this growth cannot be viewed as indicative of the arrival of a truly radical ’alternative paradigm’ of agriculture.Arts, Faculty ofGeography, Department ofGraduat

    L’opera è stata acquisita agli inizi degli anni settanta in occasione dell’apertura del Centro di Fisica Teorica di Miramare, come ricorda anche il talloncino apposto sul verso dallo stesso artista. Tra i molteplici campi dell’inesausta ricerca di Cernigoj su tecniche e materiali, un ruolo tutt’altro che secondario spetta proprio alla tarsia lignea, sperimentata per la prima volta all’inizio degli anni trenta in alcuni pannelli decorativi per la motonave Victoria e più volte riprodotti sulle pagine dei giornali specializzati (cfr. S. Vatta, Le gallerie galleggianti. Cernigoj decoratore, in Augusto Cernigoj (1898-1985). La poetica del mutamento, catalogo della mostra di Trieste, Civico Museo Revoltella 19 dicembre 1998 – 28 febbraio 1999, a cura di M. Masau Dan, F. De Vecchi, Trieste, Lint, 1998, pp. 83-87). L’artista riprenderà la sperimentazione in tal senso negli anni sessanta, grazie alla collaborazione della pittrice triestina Emanuela Marassi, specialista nel campo della tarsia lignea, che tradurrà con grande efficacia i bozzetti del maestro, tra tutti quelli per i grandi pannelli per il nuovo edificio del Teatro Sloveno. Oltre alle grandi scene narrative, Cernigoj sperimenterà anche composizioni astratte di dimensioni più ridotte, come quella in esame, o Spaziale, del 1966 conservato presso la collezione del Consiglio regionale del Friuli Venezia Giulia, che può essergli accostato per tematica, fornendo anche un possibile aggancio cronologico per la sua datazione.
