Assessment of urban surface performance of open spaces with multi-criteria decision-making method
The research presents a multi-criteria decision-making method that focuses on evaluating spatial performance by considering all areas without roads or structural elements as “urban surfaces”. In this context, the Seyyid Ömer neighbourhood in Istanbul’s Fatih district, as the study area, was discussed in detail in terms of physical, ecological, and social criteria and their sub-criteria. While the physical criteria include the size of each area and enclosure; the ecological criteria were studied with permeability rates and the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) value, which measures unit area through the amount of chlorophyll. In addition, the type of property and land use in the urban context, which are the main factors for citizens’ interaction with open spaces, were included as sub-criteria under the main social criterion. The relationships between the identified criteria and the open space typologies in the neighbourhood were converted into an index using the analytical network process (ANP) to measure the urban surface performance. The developed index indicated that some urban voids stand out even more than the important ones and have greater potential than urban parks such as Çukur Bostan in terms of social and vegetation qualities. As a result of the research, a map of the importance level was created to illustrate the potential areas for improving the urban ecological performance. Then, various pocket parks such as Şelaleli Park and Skate Park and urban voids regarding their physical, ecological and social values were extracted as potential urban open spaces. With this structure, the research proposes a multi-criteria index that can be used to evaluate the potential of urban surfaces by putting them on a multi-dimensional and computable scale
Personalized transportation model proposal to support micromobility between public spaces
Public spaces are a meeting point in the city, where different individuals meet and spend time together. Transportation options for these areas may not always be the same due to the changing demands of individuals. It is important that the preferences are not the same and not directed to the same option in order to ensure diversity in the use of public space. For this reason, in the study, a personalized transportation model between two public spaces is proposed. Analytical Hierarchy Process and Bayesian Networks are used as methods in the study. The transportation options that will be evaluated in the Analytical Hierarchy Process method are discussed within the scope of micromobility studies. Sample routes have been created for cycling, electric scooters and walking action. Literature reviews have been made for the criteria determining the choice of routes and threshold values have been removed. However, the importance of the criteria and the suitability of the routes may also change according to the different preferences of the users. For this reason, Bayesian Networks, where we can observe the dynamic variability of user preferences in determining the weight of the criteria, are included in the model

Spatial learning through landmarks
To understand the interaction between individuals and the built environment, relevant attributes, and filtering mechanisms of how individuals perceive the built environment and act within this environment should be investigated. According to Golledge and Stimson (1997), the main psychological variables intervening between an environment and human behavior are a combination of cognitive and emotional attitudes, values, emotions, perception and cognition, and learning. Moreover, these variables are connected to each other and take place within people’s social and cultural networks. Spatial learning of a new route in an unfamiliar environment needs spatial decision-making processes, and in these processes, people use landmarks
An introduction to design studio experience: The process, challenges and opportunities
Abstract: This paper explores design education in studio settings and presents insights from a design
studio based on parametric design thinking. The first-year design studios are essential parts of the
architectural education. In these studios, design decisions are taken on a more abstract level, there are
less constraints, and the exercises are designed to explore the potentials of design, within the framework
of various scales, ranging from human to building, and then to urban. The Introduction to Design course
is constructed with interconnected exercises based on concepts such as modularity, the parameters of
the human body and spatial perception. The first exercise is designing an architectural structure through
parametric thinking. The second exercise is about exploring the design potentials of cube modules with
each other, with a rule-based design approach. To better understand the importance of ergonomics in
design, the third exercise focuses on the concept of movement through the human body. The aim of the
fourth exercise is to study a physical environment and to investigate spatial perception in the built
environment. The main aim of this design studio is to teach design with parametric design thinking while
focusing on improving the cognitive skills of the students. An Introduction to Design studio experience
that is formulated according to these features is described in this study
In-vehicle personalized routing for a heterogeneous group: An experience-based method for decision support system
Customized navigation devices allow personalized routings based on user preferences. In determining common preferences for multi-user, it may become di cult to meet at a common point due to conflict of interests. A decision support system could serve as an asset to increase the quality of decisions users take. In conventional systems, decision making ties to pre-defined preferences of a single user or a homogeneous group
Representation Of User Movements By Agent-based Systems: Mall Design
The scope of this study is to analyze relationships of users and spatial configurations using agent-based simulation systems, under certain circumstances in a virtual environment with agents that represent users of a shopping mall with agent-based model developed in this research. In this study, exposing the dynamics of user-space relationship will help both students in architectural design education and professionals in practice, to observe and solve the design problems before the construction of shopping malls. This research can help designers to think about the users of buildings and to incorporate users’ needs in the design phase more than ever. The utilization area of the agent-based model is the early design phase of design, before the application phase but no later than completing the entire design decisions. High and low user density areas of shopping malls can be observed by this simulation. In this way, poor locations (low user areas), rich locations (high user areas), problem areas which limit users’ movements and do not cover high user rates can be determined and modifications can be made before the construction phase. Today, because most of the shopping malls are built without these kinds of preliminary studies, users encounter different problems on disaster situations and even on regular days. This model will help designers to design more efficient interior organizations.Yüksek LisansM.Sc
