Application of Raman diagnostics to combustion
The use of laser Raman diagnostic techniques to measure the specie concentrations and their temperatures in combustion flow fields is discussed. The system designed to measure the specie concentrations, which included a ruby laser and a photodiode to trip the laser at the maximum light and heat output of the combustion process, is described and problems encountered in developing the system are reported. Photographs of the combustion process are presented and analyzed detailing the evolution of the combustion in terms of the photodiode and the lack of a noticeable Raman-Stokes signal. The absence of the Raman-Stokes signal is discussed
Exclusive tensor meson photoproduction
We study tensor meson photoproduction outside of the resonance region, at
beam energies of few GeVs. We build a model based on Regge theory that includes
the leading vector and axial exchanges. We consider two determinations of the
unknown helicity couplings, and fit to the recent a2 photoproduction data from
CLAS. Both choices give a similar description of the a2 cross section, but
result in different predictions for the parity asymmetries and the f2
photoproduction cross section. We conclude that new measurements of f2
photoproduction in the forward region are needed to pin down the correct
production mechanism. We also extend our predictions to the 8.5 GeV beam
energy, where current experiments are running.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Version accepted for publication on

Thermomechanical simulation of an industrial quenching process applied to a centrifugal pump impeller
The thermomechanical behaviour during the quenching process of a centrifugal pump impeller made of white iron is studied in this work. The analysis is carried out using a coupled thermomechanical formulation that is discretized within the context of the finite element method. The material response is described by means of a thermoplastic model that includes phase-change effects. In particular, a heat treatment consisting in cooling from the austenizing temperature is presented with the aim of assessing the failure occurrence of the part at the end of the process. Three different criteria written in terms of the stresses and plastic deformations developed during the cooling stage are specifically compared to evaluate the final mechanical damage. The study is focused on two impeller configurations, with 4 and 5 blades, where fracture occurs in the former during its industrial production. The numerical results obtained in this work for these two cases confirm that the proposed methodology realistically predicts their failure possibilities.Peer Reviewe
Medical responsibility, insurance policies, new laws and European directives. Is it time to reform the status of Italian medical residents?
In Italy there is an ongoing debate on the need to clarify the legal aspects related to the clinical activities of medical residents. While residents attend university medical schools, specific policies should be implemented to guarantee their proper utilization in health organizations also for the direct and indirect legal responsibilities of patients health and safety. It seems necessary to create an uniform and clearer legal framework to surmount criticism of the utilization of residents. We recommend Ministries of University and Health to change the current training contract into a job-training one, in line with experiences for residents of other European countries. This initiative could promote a no-blame culture and also help Italian specialist doctors of future generations to be trained in order to move and be competitive across European country borders and finally promote the sustainability of the Italian public NHS through a patient-centred and inter-professional integrated approach
Low-field Instabilities in NbSn Multifilamentary Wires: the Possible Role of Unreacted Nb
We report an experimental study aiming to demonstrate the not negligible role of unreacted Nb on the magnetic instabilities in superconducting NbSn multifilamentary wires, observable through partial flux jumps at magnetic field values below 0.5 T. The analysed wires were recently developed for use as dipoles required in future high-energy proton accelerators and are based on powder-in-tube technology. We studied both unreacted (only involving Nb filaments) and reacted wires, finding flux jump instabilities in both cases when performing magnetic measurements. The results can be interpreted on the basis of the critical state model and are coherent with the intrinsic stability criterion
