Verse hagiography in the medieval French tradition seeks to create a textual “mirror” permitting its audience to see, and thus understand, the exemplary function of its holy protagonists. That process of revelation is often realized within an acoustic framework, rather than through visual imagery. Although the intent of hagiographic writing is to inspire imitation of its saintly heroes, the textual soundscape of a typical Old French Life (for example, the Vie de saint Gilles by Guillaume de Berneville) presents a different meaning, one that emphasizes the inimitability of the protagonist's achievement.La poésie hagiographique française vise à élaborer un “miroir” textuel donnant à son auditoire de voir, c'est-à-dire de comprendre, la valeur exemplaire du saint modèle. Or ce processus de dévoilement s'accomplit souvent sur fond sonore. Alors que l'écriture hagiographique a pour but d'encourager l'imitation, il apparaît que le fond sonore (celui, par exemple, de la Vie de saint Gilles par Guillaume de Berneville) développe un sens différent, sinon contraire, à ce sens obvie.Cazelles Brigitte.
