This doctoral thesis involves the analysis, scores and sound recordings of several composed and improvised musical compositions recorded during the years 2009 – 2010. Its main objective is the development of elements determining a personal musical language. To achieve this objective, different tools were put in place such as the development of a flexible harmonic and melodic system and the expansion of the multitude of sound effects of the vibraphone, both achieved by mastering the “bending tone”. The body of this document is divided in two parts devoted to the elaboration of a system of superposition of the different changes that can be brought to the core element and the aspect of the soloist searching for flexibility, virtuosity and the diversity of sounds linked to this particular instrument. The concepts elaborated are supported by illustrations, score references and targeted musical examples including jazz and western classical styles

Adenovirus 5 and chimeric adenovirus 5/F35 employ distinct B-lymphocyte intracellular trafficking routes that are independent of their cognate cell surface receptor

AbstractGene transfer applications with adenovirus (Ad) type 5 are limited by its native tropism, hampering their use in several cell types. To address this limitation, several Ad vectors bearing chimeric fiber have been produced to take advantage of the different cellular receptors used by other subgroups of Ads. In this study, we have compared the transduction efficiency of Ad5 and the chimeric Ad5/F35 in primary human B lymphocytes and B-cell lines as a function of the developmental stage. We found that transduction efficiencies of the two Ads differ independently of their targeted cellular receptor but are related to the intracellular localization of the virus. In efficiently transduced cells, Ads were localized in early endosomes or cytosol, whereas in poorly transduced cells they were localized within late endosomes/lysosomes. Finally, we demonstrate that treatment of cells with phosphatase inhibitors known to redirect endocytosis towards caveolae, increased Ad5/F35 transduction efficiency

Aesthetics of Indeterminacy: The Architecture of Conglomerates

By the early 1970s, concern about the rise and prominence of large conglomerate corporations had fully saturated economic discourse in the United States. As products of a brief yet powerful merger mania during the 1960s, large industrial organizations began to restructure the economy by aggressively merging with and acquiring firms in disparate industries and geographies in order to obtain what business executives referred to as ‘geopolitical’ power. With hundreds of diverse subsidiaries, many of these military-sponsored conglomerates — from Union Carbide to Litton Industries to Teledyne — demanded new laboratories and office buildings that seemed to defy modernist tendencies of material standardization, reproducibility, and homogeneity, since the rates and directions of their future growth were indeterminable. The buildings produced for conglomerates between the 1960s and 1980s have been described by urban geographers and historians as the aesthetic and material epitomes of postmodernism, since they were often designed with highly reflective, hermetic surfaces that protruded, curved, and folded — simultaneously revealing and concealing the late capitalist logics that undergirded them. This article considers how conglomeration was viewed as a geopolitical act that challenges existing histories and theories of postmodernism, which reduce the aesthetic conditions of these buildings to abstract representations of late capitalist economics. Instead, the article draws on the laboratories designed by architects CĂ©sar Pelli and Anthony Lumsden for conglomerates during the late 1960s in order to reveal how these aesthetic conditions were responses to the particular geopolitical practices and structures of conglomerate business, including the imperialist acts of ‘acquiring’ people, land, and other businesses

Des suggestions pour amĂ©liorer le processus ont Ă©tĂ© proposĂ©es.Collaborative deliberation is the process in which patients, in collaboration with their healthcare providers, analyze and reflect on care options and services that respect their values. In homecare, this process is often complex: older people have multiple health problems, are often accompanied by a family member and are followed by different professionals. In order to support the steps leading to the delivery of home care and services, computerized integrated-care-pathway have been implemented. Functions to promote seniors' participation in discussions and decisions were included in the electronic tools. This descriptive-interpretive study with mixed data aims to describe how the collaborative deliberation during home assessment visit occurs when the computerized integrated-care-pathway are used as well as the factors influencing the participation of elderly in decisions. Thirteen groups including three dyads, six triads and four quartets were observed during home assessment visits. Two coalition situations were encountered. Between one and six decisions per group were taken (median = 3). Seniors either participated in all decisions (4/13), participated in part (7/13) or participated in any decision (2/13). Decisions were scored by two independent judges using the OPTION 5 observation tool. They received a median total score of 5/20. Each participant (elderly, family member and home healthcare provider) noted their perception of the application of a collaborative deliberation process. They respectively gave a median score of 16.5 / 20, 19/20 and 16/20. Electronic functions were underused by healthcare professionals except for questions about patient’s expectations and values. Focus group with stakeholders identified barriers and facilitators to collaborative deliberation related to persons (social norms, capacities, knowledge, emotional state, constraints and interest) or related to the organization (constraints, variability and accessibility of alternatives, human resources and technological resources). This study described the process of collaborative deliberation in homecare setting, which proved to be variable. Communications and collaborative deliberation in this context are complex. High scores of perceptions suggest that elderly and family members felt listened to and respected. Suggestions to improve the process have been propose

In the mid-1990s, urban sociologist Robert Gutman argued that the field of architecture was comprised of two discourses. In universities, one discourse centered on the history, theory, and culture of architecture, and at firms, another centered on pragmatic issues of construction and business. The strength of architecture as a field, he suggested, was predicated on bridges between the two. This article considers the rise of three different “university” initiatives within architecture firms that complicate Gutman’s observed divisions, including “Gensler University,” “Albert Kahn University,” and “SHoP U” at SHoP Architects. By considering the history and scope of these initiatives in tandem with changes to accreditation criteria of architecture schools in the United States, the article makes visible some of the misalignments between academia and practice, and it raises new questions about what it might take to educate architects who can transform a profession otherwise gripped by the hands of corporate capitalism
