    We describe our third participation, that includes one high-level feature extraction run, and two manual and one interactive search runs, to the TRECVID video retrieval evaluation. All of these runs have used a system trained on the common development collection. Only visual and textual information were used where visual information consisted of color, texture and edge-based low-level features and textual information consisted of the speech transcript provided in the collection

    What Nos Teaching Practices Tell Us: A Case of Two Science Teachers

    WOS: 000325593800003Translation of nature of science (NOS) views into teaching practice and the development of teachers' NOS teaching are still open to investigation. Therefore, how teachers' translation of NOS understanding into practice occurs and what extend science teachers are able to transform their understanding into explicit reflective NOS instruction have been issues still need to be further exploration. This study explored the impact of intensive nature of science summer workshop on science teachers' views of NOS and their instructional practices. The current study was a case study of two middle school science teachers documenting their NOS views and instructional practice on NOS in the classrooms. Data resources included the VNOS-C; interviews and classroom observations. Participants made substantial improvements in their understandings of the targeted aspects of NOS as a result of their participation in professional development program. The study also showed that two of teachers translated their understanding of NOS in a certain degree into instructional practice

    Effect of Folic Acid on Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity

    OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of folic acid on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. MATERIALS and METHODS Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into five groups. Group I received intraperitoneal cisplatin (IP) 10 mg/kg/day and IP folic acid 10 mg/kg/day; Group II received IP cisplatin 10 mg/kg/day and IP physiological saline; Group III received IP cisplatin 10 mg/kg/day and intratympanic (IT) folic acid 0.15 mL/day; Group IV received IP cisplatin 10 mg/kg/day and IT physiological saline; and Group V received IT folic acid 0.15 mL/day. Before and after drug administration, plasma homocysteine, folic acid levels, and auditory brainstem evoked responses (ABR) were measured. The rats were then sacrificed, and the inner ears were processed for electron microscopy. RESULTS The differences of ABR thresholds in Group I compared to Group II were significantly smaller at 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz, whereas they were smaller but not statistically significant at 12 kHz in ABR. The differences of ABR thresholds in Group III compared to Group IV were significantly smaller at 12 kHz, and smaller but not statistically significant at 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz. Cisplatin treatment resulted in the degeneration of the cells of the organ of Corti, stria vascularis, and spiral ganglion. The cells of the organ of Corti, stria vascularis, and spiral ganglion showed a partially preserved morphology in both Group I and Group III. CONCLUSION Our study results suggests that folic acid is a potential agent in preventing cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.PubMedWoSScopu

    CACNA1H antibodies associated with headache with neurological deficits and cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytosis (HaNDL).

    BACKGROUND: Patients with the syndrome of headache with neurological deficits and lymphocytosis (HaNDL) typically present with recurrent and temporary attacks of neurological symptoms and cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytosis. AIM AND METHODS: To identify potential HaNDL-associated antibodies directed against neuronal surface and/or synapse antigens, sera of four HaNDL patients and controls were screened with indirect immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, cell-based assay, radioimmunoassay, protein macroarray and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Although HaNDL sera did not yield antibodies to any of the well-characterized neuronal surface or synapse antigens, protein macroarray and ELISA studies showed high-titer antibodies to a subunit of the T-type voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC), CACNA1H, in sera of two HaNDL patients. CONCLUSION: Our results support the notion that ion channel autoimmunity might at least partially contribute to HaNDL pathogenesis and occurrence of neurological symptoms

    Anti-neuronal and stress-induced-phosphoprotein 1 antibodies in neuro-Behcet's disease.

    No disease-specific neuronal antibodies have so far been defined in neuro-Behçet's disease (NBD). Immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry studies showed antibodies to hippocampal and cerebellar molecular layers and the surface antigens of cultured hippocampal neurons in sera and/or cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) of 13 of 20 NBD and 6 of 20 BD patients but not in multiple sclerosis or headache controls. Screening with a protein macroarray led to identification of stress-induced-phosphoprotein-1 (STIP-1) as an antigenic target. High-titer STIP-1-antibodies were detected in 6 NBD patients' sera but not in controls. These results suggest that neuronal antibodies could be useful as diagnostic biomarkers in NBD
