Radio Properties of REX BL Lacs and Galaxies
Detailed VLA observations have been gathered for a number of sources classified as either BL Lacs or galaxies, derived from the REX survey. We focus in particular on the sources identified by us, for which we have in hand homogeneous optical data, to study in more detail than allowed by the NVSS the radio properties of these sources in the framework of AGN unified models
Rich methane laminar flames doped with light unsaturated hydrocarbons. Part II: 1,3butadiene
In line with the study presented in the part I of this paper, the structure
of a laminar rich premixed methane flame doped with 1,3-butadiene has been
investigated. The flame contains 20.7% (molar) of methane, 31.4% of oxygen and
3.3% of 1,3-butadiene, corresponding to an equivalence ratio of 1.8, and a
ratio C4H6 / CH4 of 16 %. The flame has been stabilized on a burner at a
pressure of 6.7 kPa using argon as dilutant, with a gas velocity at the burner
of 36 cm/s at 333 K. The temperature ranged from 600 K close to the burner up
to 2150 K. Quantified species included usual methane C0-C2 combustion products
and 1,3-butadiene, but also propyne, allene, propene, propane, 1,2-butadiene,
butynes, vinylacetylene, diacetylene, 1,3-pentadiene, 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene
(isoprene), 1-pentene, 3-methyl-1-butene, benzene and toluene. In order to
model these new results, some improvements have been made to a mechanism
previously developed in our laboratory for the reactions of C3-C4 unsaturated
hydrocarbons. The main reaction pathways of consumption of 1,3-butadiene and of
formation of C6 aromatic species have been derived from flow rate analyses. In
this case, the C4 route to benzene formation plays an important role in
comparison to the C3 pathway
VLBI observations of seven BL Lac objects from RGB sample
We present EVN observations of seven BL Lac objects selected from the RGB
sample. To investigate the intrinsic radiation property of BL Lac objects, we
estimated the Doppler factor with the VLA or MERLIN core and the total 408 MHz
luminosity for a sample of 170 BL Lac objects. The intrinsic (comoving)
synchrotron peak frequency was then calculated by using the estimated Doppler
factor. Assuming a Lorentz factor of 5, the viewing angle of jets was
constrained. The high-resolution VLBI images of seven sources all show a
core-jet structure. We estimated the proper motions of three sources with the
VLBI archive data, and find that the apparent speed increases with the distance
of components to the core for all of them. In our BL Lacs sample, the Doppler
factor of LBLs is systematically larger than that of IBLs and HBLs. We find a
significant anti-correlation between the total 408 MHz luminosity and the
intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency. However, the scatter is much larger than
for the blazar sequence. Moreover, we find a significant positive correlation
between the viewing angle and the intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency. The BL
Lac objects show a continuous distribution on the viewing angle. While LBLs
have a smaller viewing angle than that of IBLs and HBLs, IBLs are comparable to
HBLs. We conclude that the intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency is not only
related to the intrinsic radio power (though with a large scatter), but also to
the viewing angle for the present sample.Comment: 22 pages,15figures, published by A&
XMM-Newton spectroscopy of an X-ray selected sample of RL AGNs
This paper presents the X-ray spectroscopy of an X-ray selected sample of 25
radio-loud (RL) AGNs extracted from the XBSS sample. The main goal is to study
the origin of the X-ray spectral differences usually observed between
radio-loud and radio-quiet (RQ) AGNs. To this end, a comparison sample of 53 RQ
AGNs has been also extracted from the same XBSS sample and studied together
with the sample of RL AGNs. We have focused the analysis on the distribution of
the X-ray spectral indices of the power-law component that models the large
majority of the spectra in both samples. We find that the mean X-ray energy
spectral index is very similar in the 2 samples and close to alpha_X~1.
However, the intrinsic distribution of the spectral indices is significantly
broader in the sample of RL AGNs. In order to investigate the origin of this
difference, we have divided the RL AGNs into blazars and ``non-blazars'', on
the basis of the available optical and radio information. We find strong
evidence that the broad distribution observed in the RL AGN sample is mainly
due to the presence of the blazars. Furthermore, within the blazar class we
have found a link between the X-ray spectral index and the value of the
radio-to-X-ray spectral index suggesting that the observed X-ray emission is
directly connected to the emission of the relativistic jet. This trend is not
observed among the ``non-blazars'' RL AGNs. This favours the hypothesis that,
in these latter sources, the X-ray emission is not significantly influenced by
the jet emission and it has probably an origin similar to the RQ AGNs. Overall,
the results presented here indicate that the observed distribution of the X-ray
spectral indices in a given sample of RL AGNs is strongly dependent on the
amount of relativistic beaming present in the selected sources.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Prospective Evaluation of Clinico-Pathological Predictors of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation
Background:
Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) occurs in 30% to 50% of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Prospective identification of structural/molecular changes in atrial myocardium that correlate with myocardial injury and precede and predict risk of POAF may identify new molecular pathways and targets for prevention of this common morbid complication.
Methods:
Right atrial appendage samples were prospectively collected during cardiac surgery from 239 patients enrolled in the OPERA trial (Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Prevention of Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation), fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and embedded in paraffin for histology. We assessed general tissue morphology, cardiomyocyte diameters, myocytolysis (perinuclear myofibril loss), accumulation of perinuclear glycogen, interstitial fibrosis, and myocardial gap junction distribution. We also assayed NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide), hs-cTnT, CRP (C-reactive protein), and circulating oxidative stress biomarkers (F2-isoprostanes, F3-isoprostanes, isofurans) in plasma collected before, during, and 48 hours after surgery. POAF was defined as occurrence of postcardiac surgery atrial fibrillation or flutter of at least 30 seconds duration confirmed by rhythm strip or 12-lead ECG. The follow-up period for all arrhythmias was from surgery until hospital discharge or postoperative day 10.
Results:
Thirty-five percent of patients experienced POAF. Compared with the non-POAF group, they were slightly older and more likely to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or heart failure. They also had a higher European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation and more often underwent valve surgery. No differences in left atrial size were observed between patients with POAF and patients without POAF. The extent of atrial interstitial fibrosis, cardiomyocyte myocytolysis, cardiomyocyte diameter, glycogen score or Cx43 distribution at the time of surgery was not significantly associated with incidence of POAF. None of these histopathologic abnormalities were correlated with levels of NT-proBNP, hs-cTnT, CRP, or oxidative stress biomarkers.
Conclusions:
In sinus rhythm patients undergoing cardiac surgery, histopathologic changes in the right atrial appendage do not predict POAF. They also do not correlate with biomarkers of cardiac function, inflammation, and oxidative stress
Impact of Fractional Flow Reserve Derived from Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography on Heart Team Treatment Decision-Making in Patients with Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease: Insights from the SYNTAX III REVOLUTION Trial
Background: Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is a reliable tool for the functional assessment of coronary stenoses. FFR computed tomography (CT) derived (FFRCT) has shown to be accurate, but its clinical usefulness in patients with complex coronary artery disease remains to be investigated. The present study sought to determine the impact of FFRCT on heart team's treatment decision-making and selection of vessels for revascularization in patients with 3-vessel coronary artery disease. Methods: The trial was an international, multicenter study randomizing 2 heart teams to make a treatment decision between percutaneous coronary interventions and coronary artery bypass grafting using either coronary computed tomography angiography or conventional angiography. The heart teams received the FFRCT and had to make a treatment decision and planning integrating the functional component of the stenoses. Each heart team calculated the anatomic SYNTAX score, the noninvasive functional SYNTAX score and subsequently integrated the clinical information to compute the SYNTAX score III providing a treatment recommendation, that is, coronary artery bypass grafting, percutaneous coronary intervention, or equipoise coronary artery bypass grafting-percutaneous coronary intervention. The primary objective was to determine the proportion of patients in whom FFRCT changed the treatment decision and planning. Results: Overall, 223 patients were included. Coronary computed tomography angiography assessment was feasible in 99% of the patients and FFRCT analysis in 88%. FFRCT was available for 1030 lesions (mean FFRCT value 0.64\ub113). A treatment recommendation of coronary artery bypass grafting was made in 24% of the patients with coronary computed tomography angiography with FFRCT. The addition of FFRCT changed the treatment decision in 7% of the patients and modified selection of vessels for revascularization in 12%. With conventional angiography as reference, FFRCT assessment resulted in reclassification of 14% of patients from intermediate and high to low SYNTAX score tertile. Conclusions: In patients with 3-vessel coronary artery disease, a noninvasive physiology assessment using FFRCT changed heart team's treatment decision-making and procedural planning in one-fifth of the patients

Thymic Alterations in GM2 Gangliosidoses Model Mice
BACKGROUND: Sandhoff disease is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by the absence of β-hexosaminidase and storage of GM2 ganglioside and related glycolipids. We have previously found that the progressive neurologic disease induced in Hexb(-/-) mice, an animal model for Sandhoff disease, is associated with the production of pathogenic anti-glycolipid autoantibodies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In our current study, we report on the alterations in the thymus during the development of mild to severe progressive neurologic disease. The thymus from Hexb(-/-) mice of greater than 15 weeks of age showed a marked decrease in the percentage of immature CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells and a significantly increased number of CD4(+)/CD8(-) T cells. During involution, the levels of both apoptotic thymic cells and IgG deposits to T cells were found to have increased, whilst swollen macrophages were prominently observed, particularly in the cortex. We employed cDNA microarray analysis to monitor gene expression during the involution process and found that genes associated with the immune responses were upregulated, particularly those expressed in macrophages. CXCL13 was one of these upregulated genes and is expressed specifically in the thymus. B1 cells were also found to have increased in the thy mus. It is significant that these alterations in the thymus were reduced in FcRγ additionally disrupted Hexb(-/-) mice. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These results suggest that the FcRγ chain may render the usually poorly immunogenic thymus into an organ prone to autoimmune responses, including the chemotaxis of B1 cells toward CXCL13
