Consequences of replacing native savannahs with acacia plantations for the taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic α- and β-diversity of bats in the northern Brazilian Amazon
Across the globe, millions of hectares of native vegetation have been replaced by commercial plantations, with negative consequences for biodiversity. The effects of the replacement of native vegetation with commercial plantations on the functional and phylogenetic diversity of bat assemblages remain understudied, and most studies have focused exclusively on the taxonomic component of diversity. Here, we investigate how the replacement of natural savannahs by acacia plantations affects the α- and β-diversity of bat assemblages. We sampled bats, using mist-nets at ground level, in natural forest, savannah areas and acacia plantations, in the Lavrados de Roraima in the northern Brazilian Amazon. Our results show that, in general, acacia is less diverse than native forests in terms of taxonomic and functional diversity, and is also less taxonomically diverse than the savannah matrix which it substitutes. The observed patterns of α- and β-diversity found in the present study are in large part driven by the superabundance of one generalist and opportunistic species, Carollia perspicillata, in the acacia plantations. Taken together, our results show that the replacement of areas of natural savannah by acacia plantations causes a regional loss in diversity across all diversity dimensions: taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic. However, further studies are required to fully understand the ecological and conservation implications of this landscape change
Numerical study of circulation on the inner Amazon Shelf

domain of the Amazon Shelf by applying the hydrodynamic
module of the Estuarine and Coastal Ocean
Model and Sediment Transport - ECOMSED. The first
barotropic experiment aimed to explain the major bathymetric
effects on tides and those generated by anisotropy
in sediment distribution. We analyzed the continental
shelf response of barotropic tides under realistic bottom
stress parametrization (Cd), considering sediment granulometry
obtained from a faciologic map, where river
mud deposits and reworked sediments areas are well distinguished,
among others classes of sediments. Very low
Cd values were set in the fluid mud regions off the Amapa
coast (1.0 10-4 ), in contrast to values around 3:5 10-3
for coarser sediment regions off the Para coast. Three-dimensional
experiments represented the Amazon River
discharge and trade winds, combined to barotropic tide
influences and induced vertical mixing. The quasi-resonant
response of the Amazon Shelf to the M2 tide act on
the local hydrodynamics by increasing tidal admittance,
along with tidal forcing at the shelf break and extensive
fluid mud regions. Harmonic analysis of modeled
currents agreed well with analysis of the AMASSEDS
observational data set. Tidal-induced vertical shear provided
strong homogenization of threshold waters, which
are subject to a kind of hydraulic control due to the topographic
steepness. Ahead of the hydraulic jump, the
low-salinity plume is disconnected from the bottom and
acquires negative vorticity, turning southeastward. Tides
act as a generator mechanism and topography, via hydraulic
control, as a maintainer mechanism for the low-salinity
frontal zone positioning. Tidally induced southeastward
plume fate is overwhelmed by northwestward
trade winds so that, along with background circulation,
probably play the most important role on the plume fate
and variability over the Amazon Shelf
Effects of temperature on thick branes and the fermion (quasi-)localization
Following Campos's work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 141602 (2002)], we investigate
the effects of temperature on flat, de Sitter (dS), and anti-de Following

effects of temperature on flat, de Sitter (dS), and anti-de Sitter (AdS) thick
branes in five-dimensional (5D) warped spacetime, and on the fermion
(quasi-)localization. First, in the case of flat brane, when the critical
temperature reaches, the solution of the background scalar field and the warp
factor is not unique. So the thickness of the flat thick brane is uncertain at
the critical value of the temperature parameter, which is found to be lower
than the one in flat 5D spacetime. The mass spectra of the fermion Kaluza-Klein
(KK) modes are continuous, and there is a series of fermion resonances. The
number and lifetime of the resonances are finite and increase with the
temperature parameter, but the mass of the resonances decreases with the
temperature parameter. Second, in the case of dS brane, we do not find such a
critical value of the temperature parameter. The mass spectra of the fermion KK
modes are also continuous, and there is a series of fermion resonances. The
effects of temperature on resonance number, lifetime, and mass are the same
with the case of flat brane. Last, in the case of AdS brane, {the critical
value of the temperature parameter can less or greater than the one in the flat
5D spacetime.} The spectra of fermion KK modes are discrete, and the mass of
fermion KK modes does not decrease monotonically with increasing temperature

Neuronal circuitry for pain processing in the dorsal horn
Neurons in the spinal dorsal horn process sensory information, which is then transmitted to several brain regions, including those responsible for pain perception. The dorsal horn provides numerous potential targets for the development of novel analgesics and is thought to undergo changes that contribute to the exaggerated pain felt after nerve injury and inflammation. Despite its obvious importance, we still know little about the neuronal circuits that process sensory information, mainly because of the heterogeneity of the various neuronal components that make up these circuits. Kerr/CFT, dipole theories and nonrelativistic CFTs
We study solutions of type IIB supergravity which are SL(2,R) x SU(2) x
U(1)^2 invariant deformations of AdS_3 x S^3 x K3 and take the form of products
of self-dual spacelike warped AdS_3 and a deformed three-sphere. One of these
backgrounds has been recently argued to be relevant for a derivation of
Kerr/CFT from string theory, whereas the remaining ones are holographic duals
of two-dimensional dipole theories and their S-duals. We show that each of
these backgrounds is holographically dual to a deformation of the DLCQ of the
D1-D5 CFT by a specific supersymmetric (1,2) operator, which we write down
explicitly in terms of twist operators at the free orbifold point. The
deforming operator is argued to be exactly marginal with respect to the
zero-dimensional nonrelativistic conformal (or Schroedinger) group - which is
simply SL(2,R)_L x U(1)_R. Moreover, in the supergravity limit of large N and
strong coupling, no other single-trace operators are turned on. We thus propose
that the field theory duals to the backgrounds of interest are nonrelativistic
CFTs defined by adding the single Schroedinger-invariant (1,2) operator
mentioned above to the original CFT action. Our analysis indicates that the
rotating extremal black holes we study are best thought of as finite
right-moving temperature (non-supersymmetric) states in the above-defined
supersymmetric nonrelativistic CFT and hints towards a more general connection

Genome of the Avirulent Human-Infective Trypanosome—Trypanosoma rangeli
Background: Trypanosoma rangeli is a hemoflagellate protozoan parasite infecting humans and other wild and domestic mammals across Central and South America. It does not cause human disease, but it can be mistaken for the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, Trypanosoma cruzi. We have sequenced the T. rangeli genome to provide new tools for elucidating the distinct and intriguing biology of this species and the key pathways related to interaction with its arthropod and mammalian hosts. Methodology/Principal Findings: The T. rangeli haploid genome is ,24 Mb in length, and is the smallest and least repetitive trypanosomatid genome sequenced thus far. This parasite genome has shorter subtelomeric sequences compared to those of T. cruzi and T. brucei; displays intraspecific karyotype variability and lacks minichromosomes. Of the predicted 7,613 protein coding sequences, functional annotations could be determined for 2,415, while 5,043 are hypothetical proteins, some with evidence of protein expression. 7,101 genes (93%) are shared with other trypanosomatids that infect humans. An ortholog of the dcl2 gene involved in the T. brucei RNAi pathway was found in T. rangeli, but the RNAi machinery is non-functional since the other genes in this pathway are pseudogenized. T. rangeli is highly susceptible to oxidative stress, a phenotype that may be explained by a smaller number of anti-oxidant defense enzymes and heatshock proteins. Conclusions/Significance: Phylogenetic comparison of nuclear and mitochondrial genes indicates that T. rangeli and T. cruzi are equidistant from T. brucei. In addition to revealing new aspects of trypanosome co-evolution within the vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, comparative genomic analysis with pathogenic trypanosomatids provides valuable new information that can be further explored with the aim of developing better diagnostic tools and/or therapeutic targets
Measurement and Interpretation of Fermion-Pair Production at LEP energies above the Z Resonance
This paper presents DELPHI measurements and interpretations of
cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries, and angular distributions, for
the e+e- -> ffbar process for centre-of-mass energies above the Z resonance,
from sqrt(s) ~ 130 - 207 GeV at the LEP collider. The measurements are
consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model and are used to study a
variety of models including the S-Matrix ansatz for e+e- -> ffbar scattering
and several models which include physics beyond the Standard Model: the
exchange of Z' bosons, contact interactions between fermions, the exchange of
gravitons in large extra dimensions and the exchange of sneutrino in R-parity

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy in Brazilian Portuguese
Background: Estimates of unplanned pregnancy worldwide are of concern, especially in low and middle-income countries, including Brazil. Although the contraceptive prevalence rate is high in Brazil, almost half of all pregnancies are reported as unintended. The only source of nationally representative data about pregnancy intention is the Demographic and Health Survey, as with many other countries. In more recent years, however, it has been realized that concept of unintended pregnancy is potentially more complex and requires more sophisticated measurement strategies, such as the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP). The LMUP has been translated and validated in other languages, but not Portuguese yet. In this study, we evaluate the psychometric properties of the LMUP in the Portuguese language, Brazilian version. Methods: A Brazilian Portuguese version of the LMUP was produced via translation and back-translation. After piloting, the mode of administration was changed from self-completion to interviewer-administration. The measure was field tested with pregnant, postpartum, and postabortion women recruited at maternity and primary health care services in Sao Paulo city. Reliability (internal consistency) was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and item-total correlations. Construct validity was assessed using principal components analysis and hypothesis testing. Scaling was assessed with Mokken analysis. Results: 759 women aged 15–44 completed the Brazilian Portuguese LMUP. There were no missing data. The measure was acceptable and well targeted. Reliability testing demonstrated good internal consistency (alpha = 0.81, all item-rest correlations >0.2). Validity testing confirmed that the measure was unidimensional and that all hypotheses were met: there were lower LMUP median scores among women in the extreme age groups (p<0.001), among non-married women (p<0.001) and those with lower educational attainment (p<0.001). The Loevinger H coefficient was 0.60, indicating a strong scale. Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese LMUP is a valid and reliable measure of pregnancy
planning/intention that is now available for use in Brazil. It represents a useful addition to the public
health research and surveillance toolkit in Brazil
