Viscous-Inviscid Interactions in a Boundary-Layer Flow Induced by a Vortex Array
In this paper we investigate the asymptotic validity of boundary layer
theory. For a flow induced by a periodic row of point-vortices, we compare
Prandtl's solution to Navier-Stokes solutions at different numbers. We
show how Prandtl's solution develops a finite time separation singularity. On
the other hand Navier-Stokes solution is characterized by the presence of two
kinds of viscous-inviscid interactions between the boundary layer and the outer
flow. These interactions can be detected by the analysis of the enstrophy and
of the pressure gradient on the wall. Moreover we apply the complex singularity
tracking method to Prandtl and Navier-Stokes solutions and analyze the previous
interactions from a different perspective
Association of cardiometabolic microRNAs with COVID-19 severity and mortality
AIMS: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can lead to multiorgan damage. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in blood reflect cell activation and tissue injury. We aimed to determine the association of circulating miRNAs with COVID-19 severity and 28 day intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed RNA-Seq in plasma of healthy controls (n = 11), non-severe (n = 18), and severe (n = 18) COVID-19 patients and selected 14 miRNAs according to cell- and tissue origin for measurement by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT–qPCR) in a separate cohort of mild (n = 6), moderate (n = 39), and severe (n = 16) patients. Candidates were then measured by RT–qPCR in longitudinal samples of ICU COVID-19 patients (n = 240 samples from n = 65 patients). A total of 60 miRNAs, including platelet-, endothelial-, hepatocyte-, and cardiomyocyte-derived miRNAs, were differentially expressed depending on severity, with increased miR-133a and reduced miR-122 also being associated with 28 day mortality. We leveraged mass spectrometry-based proteomics data for corresponding protein trajectories. Myocyte-derived (myomiR) miR-133a was inversely associated with neutrophil counts and positively with proteins related to neutrophil degranulation, such as myeloperoxidase. In contrast, levels of hepatocyte-derived miR-122 correlated to liver parameters and to liver-derived positive (inverse association) and negative acute phase proteins (positive association). Finally, we compared miRNAs to established markers of COVID-19 severity and outcome, i.e. SARS-CoV-2 RNAemia, age, BMI, D-dimer, and troponin. Whilst RNAemia, age and troponin were better predictors of mortality, miR-133a and miR-122 showed superior classification performance for severity. In binary and triplet combinations, miRNAs improved classification performance of established markers for severity and mortality. CONCLUSION: Circulating miRNAs of different tissue origin, including several known cardiometabolic biomarkers, rise with COVID-19 severity. MyomiR miR-133a and liver-derived miR-122 also relate to 28 day mortality. MiR-133a reflects inflammation-induced myocyte damage, whilst miR-122 reflects the hepatic acute phase response
Measurement of the B-Meson Inclusive Semileptonic Branching Fraction and Electron-Energy Moments
We report a new measurement of the B-meson semileptonic decay momentum
spectrum that has been made with a sample of 9.4/fb of electron-positron
annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Y(4S) resonance.
Electrons from primary semileptonic decays and secondary charm decays were
separated by using charge and angular correlations in Y(4S) events with a
high-momentum lepton and an additional electron. We determined the semileptonic
branching fraction to be (10.91 +- 0.09 +- 0.24)% from the normalization of the
electron-energy spectrum. We also measured the moments of the electron energy
spectrum with minimum energies from 0.6 GeV to 1.5 GeV.Comment: 36 pages postscript, als available through

Moments of the B Meson Inclusive Semileptonic Decay Rate using Neutrino Reconstruction
We present a measurement of the composition of B meson inclusive semileptonic
decays using 9.4 fb^-1 of e^+e^- data taken with the CLEO detector at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance. In addition to measuring the charged lepton kinematics,
the neutrino four-vector is inferred using the hermiticity of the detector. We
perform a maximum likelihood fit over the full three-dimensional differential
decay distribution for the fractional contributions from the B -> X_c l nu
processes with X_c = D, D*, D**, and nonresonant X_c, and the process B -> X_u
l nu. From the fit results we extract the first and second moments of the M_X^2
and q^2 distributions with minimum lepton-energy requirements of 1.0 GeV and
1.5 GeV. We find = 0.456 +- 0.014 +- 0.045 +- 0.109
(GeV/c^2)^2 with a minimum lepton energy of 1.0 GeV and =
0.293 +- 0.012 +- 0.033 +- 0.048 (GeV/c^2)^2 with minimum lepton energy of 1.5
GeV. The uncertainties are from statistics, detector systematic effects, and
model dependence, respectively. As a test of the HQET and OPE calculations, the
results for the M^X_c moment as a function of the minimum lepton energy

Wess-Zumino Current and the Structure of the Decay tau^- to K^-K^+ pi^- nu_tau
We present the first study of the vector (Wess-Zumino) current in tau^-\to
K^-pi^-K^+\nu_\tau decay using data collected with the CLEO III detector at the
Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We determine the quantitative contributions to
the decay width from the vector and axial vector currents. Within the framework
of a model by Kuhn and Mirkes, we identify the quantitative contributions to
the total decay rate from the intermediate states \omega\pi, \rho^{(\prime)}\pi

First Observation of a Upsilon(1D) State
We present the first evidence for the production of Upsilon(1D) states in the
four-photon cascade, Upsilon(3S)-->gamma chib(2P), chib(2P)-->gamma
Upsilon(1D), Upsilon(1D)-->gamma chib(1P), chib(1P)-->gamma Upsilon(1S),
followed by the Upsilon(1S) annihilation into e+e- or mu+mu-. The signal has a
significance of 10.2 standard deviations. The measured product branching ratio
for these five decays, (2.5+-0.5+-0.5)x10^(-5), is consistent with the
theoretical estimates. The data are dominated by the production of one
Upsilon(1D) state consistent with the J=2 assignment. Its mass is determined to
be (10161.1+-0.6+-1.6) MeV, which is consistent with the predictions from
potential models and lattice QCD calculations.
We also searched for Upsilon(3S)-->gammachib(2P),
chib(2P)-->gammaUpsilon(1D), followed by either Upsilon(1D)-->eta Upsilon(1S)
or Upsilon(1D)-->pi+pi- Upsilon(1S). We find no evidence for such decays and
set upper limits on the product branching ratios.Comment: 12 pages postscript,also available through this

Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores
A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
