Effect of Target Thickness on Cratering and Penetration of Projectiles Impacting at Velocities to 13,000 Feet Per Second
In order to determine the effects of target thickness on the penetration and cratering of a target resulting from impacts by high-velocity projectiles, a series of experimental tests have been run. The projectile-target material combinations investigated were aluminum projectiles impacting aluminum targets and steel projectiles impacting aluminum and copper targets. The velocity spectrum ranged from 4,000 ft/sec to 13,000 ft/sec. It has been found that the penetration is a function of target thickness provided that the penetration is greater than 20 percent of the target thickness. Targets of a thickness such that the penetration amounts to less than 20 percent of the thickness may be regarded as quasi-infinite. An empirical formula has been established relating the penetration to the target thickness and to the penetration of a projectile of the same mass, configuration, and velocity into a quasi- infinite target. In particular, it has been found that a projectile can completely penetrate a target whose thickness is approximately one and one-half times as great as the penetration of a similar projectile into a quasi-infinite target. The diameter of a crater has also been found to be a function of the target thickness provided that the target thickness is not greater than the projectile length in the case of cylindrical projectiles and not greater than two to three times the projectile diameter in the case of spherical projectiles
Chaos-assisted emission from asymmetric resonant cavity microlasers
We study emission from quasi-one-dimensional modes of an asymmetric resonant
cavity that are associated with a stable periodic ray orbit confined inside the
cavity by total internal reflection. It is numerically demonstrated that such
modes exhibit directional emission, which is explained by chaos-assisted
emission induced by dynamical tunneling. Fabricating semiconductor microlasers
with the asymmetric resonant cavity, we experimentally demonstrate the
selective excitation of the quasi-one-dimensional modes by employing the device
structure to preferentially inject currents to these modes and observe
directional emission in good accordance with the theoretical prediction based

A MMT/Hectospec Redshift Survey of 24 Micron Sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey
We present a spectroscopic survey using the MMT/Hectospec fiber spectrograph
of 24 micron sources selected with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the Spitzer
First Look Survey. We report 1296 new redshifts for 24 micron sources,
including 599 with f(24micron) > 1 mJy. Combined with 291 additional redshifts
for sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), our observing program was
highly efficient and is ~90% complete for i' 1 mJy,
and is 35% complete for i' < 20.5 mag and 0.3 mJy < f(24micron) < 1 mJy. Our
Hectospec survey includes 1078 and 168 objects spectroscopically classified as
galaxies and QSOs, respectively. Combining the Hectospec and SDSS samples, we
find 24 micron-selected galaxies to z < 0.98 and QSOs to z < 3.6, with mean
redshifts of = 0.27 and =1.1. As part of this publication, we

ZFOURGE: Using Composite Spectral Energy Distributions to Characterize Galaxy Populations at 1<z<4
We investigate the properties of galaxies as they shut off star formation
over the 4 billion years surrounding peak cosmic star formation. To do this we
categorize galaxies from into groups based on the shape
of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and build composite SEDs with
resolution. These composite SEDs show a variety of spectral shapes
and also show trends in parameters such as color, mass, star formation rate,
and emission line equivalent width. Using emission line equivalent widths and
strength of the 4000\AA\ break, , we categorize the composite SEDs
into five classes: extreme emission line, star-forming, transitioning,
post-starburst, and quiescent galaxies. The transitioning population of
galaxies show modest H emission (\AA) compared to
more typical star-forming composite SEDs at
(\AA). Together with their smaller sizes (3 kpc vs. 4 kpc)
and higher S\'ersic indices (2.7 vs. 1.5), this indicates that morphological
changes initiate before the cessation of star formation. The transitional group
shows a strong increase of over one dex in number density from to
, similar to the growth in the quiescent population, while
post-starburst galaxies become rarer at . We calculate average
quenching timescales of 1.6 Gyr at and 0.9 Gyr at and
conclude that a fast quenching mechanism producing post-starbursts dominated
the quenching of galaxies at early times, while a slower process has become

CANDELS: The Contribution of the Observed Galaxy Population to Cosmic Reionization
We present measurements of the specific ultraviolet luminosity density from a
sample of 483 galaxies at 6<z<8. These galaxies were selected from new deep
near-infrared HST imaging from the CANDELS, HUDF09 and ERS programs. In
contrast to the majority of previous analyses, which assume that the
distribution of galaxy ultraviolet (UV) luminosities follows a Schechter
distribution, and that the distribution continues to luminosities far below our
observable limit, we investigate the contribution to reionization from galaxies
which we can observe, free from these assumptions. We find that the observable
population of galaxies can sustain a fully reionized IGM at z=6, if the average
ionizing photon escape fraction (f_esc) is ~30%. A number of previous studies
have measured UV luminosity densities at these redshifts that vary by 5X, with
many concluding that galaxies could not complete reionization by z=6 unless a
large population of galaxies fainter than the detection limit were invoked, or
extremely high values of f_esc were present. The observed UV luminosity density
from our observed galaxy samples at z=7-8 is not sufficient to maintain a fully
reionized IGM unless f_esc>50%. Combining our observations with constraints on
the emission rate of ionizing photons from Ly-alpha forest observations at z=6,
we can constrain f_esc<34% (2-sigma) if the observed galaxies are the only
contributors to reionization, or <13% (2-sigma) if the luminosity function
extends to M_UV = -13. These escape fractions are sufficient to complete
reionization by z=6. These constraints imply that the volume ionized fraction
of the IGM becomes less than unity at z>7, consistent with a number of
complementary reionization probes. If faint galaxies dominate reionization,
future JWST observations will probe deep enough to see them, providing an

Mitochondrial phylogeography and demographic history of the Vicuña: implications for conservation
The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna; Miller, 1924) is a conservation success story, having recovered from near extinction in the 1960s to current population levels estimated at 275 000. However, lack of information about its demographic history and genetic diversity has limited both our understanding of its recovery and the development of science-based conservation measures. To examine the evolution and recent demographic history of the vicuña across its current range and to assess its genetic variation and population structure, we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from the control region (CR) for 261 individuals from 29 populations across Peru, Chile and Argentina. Our results suggest that populations currently designated as Vicugna vicugna vicugna and Vicugna vicugna mensalis comprise separate mitochondrial lineages. The current population distribution appears to be the result of a recent demographic expansion associated with the last major glacial event of the Pleistocene in the northern (18 to 22°S) dry Andes 14–12 000 years ago and the establishment of an extremely arid belt known as the 'Dry Diagonal' to 29°S. Within the Dry Diagonal, small populations of V. v. vicugna appear to have survived showing the genetic signature of demographic isolation, whereas to the north V. v. mensalis populations underwent a rapid demographic expansion before recent anthropogenic impacts
Mutation screening and association study of RNASEL as a prostate cancer susceptibility gene
To date, germline mutations have been found in three candidate genes for hereditary prostate cancer: ELAC2 at 17p11, RNASEL at 1q25 and MSR1 at 8p22. RNASEL, encoding the 2′,5′-oligoadenylate-dependant RNase L, seems to have rare mutations in different ethnicities, such as M1I in Afro-Americans, E265X in men of European descent and 471delAAAG in Ashkenazi Jews. In order to evaluate the relevance of RNASEL in the German population, we sequenced its open reading frame to determine the spectrum and frequency of germline mutations. The screen included 303 affected men from 136 Caucasian families, of which 45 met the criteria for hereditary prostate cancer. Variants were analysed using a family-based association test, and genotyped in an additional 227 sporadic prostate cancer patients and 207 controls. We identified only two sib pairs (1.4% of our families) cosegregating conspicuous RNASEL variants with prostate cancer: the nonsense mutation E265X, and a new amino-acid substitution (R400P) of unknown functional relevance. Both alleles were also found at low frequencies (1.4 and 0.5%, respectively) in controls. No significant association of polymorphisms (I97L, R462Q and D541E) was observed, neither in case–control analyses nor by family-based association tests. In contrast to previous reports, our study does not suggest that common variants (i.e. R462Q) modify disease risk. Our results are not consistent with a high penetrance of deleterious RNASEL mutations. Due to the low frequency of germline mutations present in our sample, RNASEL does not have a significant impact on prostate cancer susceptibility in the German population
Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae as primary causes of acute otitis media in colombian children: a prospective study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most frequently encountered bacterial infections in children aged < 5 years; <it>Streptococcus pneumoniae </it>(<it>S. pneumoniae</it>) and non-typeable <it>Haemophilus influenzae </it>(NTHi) are historically identified as primary AOM causes. Nevertheless, recent data on bacterial pathogens causing AOM in Latin America are limited. This prospective study aimed to identify and characterize bacterial etiology and serotypes of AOM cases including antimicrobial susceptibility in < 5 year old Colombian children.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From February 2008 to January 2009, children ≥3 months and < 5 years of age presenting with AOM and for whom a middle ear fluid (MEF) sample was available were enrolled in two medical centers in Cali, Colombia. MEF samples were collected either by tympanocentesis procedure or spontaneous otorrhea swab sampling. Bacteria were identified using standard laboratory methods, and antimicrobial resistance testing was performed based on the 2009 Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) criteria. Most of the cases included in the study were sporadic in nature.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 106 enrolled children, 99 were included in the analysis. Bacteria were cultured from 62/99 (63%) of samples with <it>S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, or S. pyogenes</it>. The most commonly isolated bacteria were <it>H. influenzae </it>in 31/99 (31%) and <it>S. pneumoniae </it>in 30/99 (30%) of samples. The majority of <it>H. influenzae </it>episodes were NTHi (27/31; 87%). 19F was the most frequently isolated pneumococcal serotype (10/30; 33%). Of the 30 <it>S. pneumoniae </it>positive samples, 8/30 (27%) were resistant to tetracycline, 5/30 (17%) to erythromycin and 8/30 (27%) had intermediate resistance to penicillin. All <it>H. influenzae </it>isolates tested were negative to beta-lactamase.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>NTHi and <it>S. pneumoniae </it>are the leading causes of AOM in Colombian children. A pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that prevents both pathogens could be useful in maximizing protection against AOM.</p
