The Power Of Language And Its Integral Role In Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Education
Abstract

The Power of Language and Its Integral Role in LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Education Language plays a central role in our daily lives; it is through language that we name, identify, and differentiate everyone and everything in our world. It is through language that dominant, heteronormative discourses have been established surrounding gender and sexuality. Heteronormativity positions heterosexual and cisgender (identifying with the sex / gender assigned at birth) identities as normal and natural, while excluding and oppressing LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer / questioning, + other non-conforming identities) individuals. Despite a heavy push for ‘diversity’ and LGBTQ+ ‘inclusion’ in the world of education, schools are overwhelmingly toxic environments for LGBTQ+ identified (or perceived) students (GLSEN, 2019). As a queer person working in education, I noticed that educators, the most eager allies included, often lack awareness of how to talk about LGBTQ+ topics and identities. This prompted the research question: How does understanding language enable educators to move from being LGBTQ+ allies in intention to allies in action? The literature review offers insight into historical factors that have contributed to heteronormative dialogues, and highlights the usefulness of critical theories in uncovering the ways language is used as both tools of oppression and resistance to domination and control. The final product is a website dedicated to raising awareness around the importance of language as it relates to LGBTQ+ inclusion in education. Topics included on the website are intended to encourage educators to critically examine their own language use as it relates to LGBTQ+ inclusion, as well as all language for the ways it upholds systems of power and perpetuates the marginalization of ‘others’

Impact of the Phytoestrogen Content of Laboratory Animal Feed on the Gene Expression Profile of the Reproductive System in the Immature Female Rat
The effect of the dietary background of phytoestrogens on the outcome of rodent bioassays used to identify and assess the reproductive hazard of endocrine-disrupting chemicals is controversial. Phytoestrogens, including genistein, daidzein, and coumestrol, are fairly abundant in soybeans and alfalfa, common ingredients of laboratory animal diets. These compounds are weak agonists for the estrogen receptor (ER) and, when administered at sufficient doses, elicit an estrogenic response in vivo. In this study, we assessed the potential estrogenic effects of dietary phytoestrogens at the gene expression level, together with traditional biologic end points, using estrogen-responsive tissues of the immature female rat. We compared the gene expression profile of the uterus and ovaries, as a pool, obtained using a uterotrophic assay protocol, from intact prepubertal rats fed a casein-based diet (free from soy and alfalfa) or a regular rodent diet (Purina 5001) containing soy and alfalfa. Estrogenic potency of the phytoestrogen-containing diet was determined by analyzing uterine wet weight gain, luminal epithelial cell height, and gene expression profile in the uterus and ovaries. These were compared with the same parameters evaluated in animals exposed to a low dose of a potent ER agonist [0.1 μg/kg/day 17α-ethynyl estradiol (EE) for 4 days]. Exposure to dietary phytoestrogens or to a low dose of EE did not advance vaginal opening, increase uterine wet weight, or increase luminal epithelial cell height in animals fed either diet. Although there are genes whose expression differs in animals fed the soy/alfalfa-based diet versus the casein diet, those genes are not associated with estrogenic stimulation. The expression of genes well known to be estrogen regulated, such as progesterone receptor, intestinal calcium-binding protein, and complement component 3, is not affected by consumption of the soy/alfalfa-based diet when assessed by microarray or quantitative reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction analysis. Our results indicate that although diet composition has an impact on gene expression in uterus and ovaries, it does not contribute to the effects of an ER agonist
Limits on the cosmological abundance of supermassive compact objects from a millilensing search in gamma-ray burst data
A new search for the gravitational lens effects of a significant cosmological
density of supermassive compact objects (SCOs) on gamma-ray bursts has yielded
a null result. We inspected the timing data of 774 BATSE-triggered GRBs for
evidence of millilensing: repeated peaks similar in light-curve shape and
spectra. Our null detection leads us to conclude that, in all candidate
universes simulated, is favored for , while in some universes and mass ranges the density
limits are as much as 10 times lower. Therefore, a cosmologically significant
population of SCOs near globular cluster mass neither came out of the

Sincerity, Hypocrisy, and Conspiracy Theory in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Concerns about lying and sincerity in politics are common in most societies, as are concerns about conspiracy theories. But in the occupied Palestinian territory, these concerns give rise to particular kinds of effects because of the conditions of Israeli occupation. Political theorists often interpret opacity claims and conspiracy theories as responses to social disorder. In occupied Palestine, disorder and instability are standard. Opacity claims and conspiracy theories therefore require a different kind of analysis. Through an examination of the semiotic ideology of sincerity, especially as it has emerged in the conflict between Fatah and Hamas, this article argues that opacity claims act as a form of nationalist pedagogy, at once reinforcing the basic principles of sincerity of action and word, and encouraging a wariness of political spin
Longitudinal study of use and cost of subacromial decompression surgery:the need for effective evaluation of surgical procedures to prevent overtreatment and wasted resources
OBJECTIVES:To illustrate the need for better evaluation of surgical procedures, we investigated the use and cost of subacromial decompression in England over the last decade compared with other countries and explored how this related to the conduct and outcomes of randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trials. DESIGN:Longitudinal observational study using Hospital Episode Statistics linked to Payment by Results tariffs in England, 2007/2008 to 2016/2017. SETTING:Hospital care in England; Finland; New York State, USA; Florida State, USA and Western Australia. PARTICIPANTS:Patients with subacromial shoulder pain. INTERVENTIONS:Subacromial decompression. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:National procedure rates, costs and variation between clinical commissioning groups in England. RESULTS:Without robust clinical evidence, the use of subacromial decompression in England increased by 91% from 15 112 procedures (30 per 100 000 population) in 2007/2008, to 28 802 procedures (52 per 100 000 population) in 2016/2017, costing over £125 million per year. Rates of use of subacromial decompression are even higher internationally: Finland (131 per 100 000 in 2011), Florida State (130 per 100 000 in 2007), Western Australia (115 per 100 000 in 2013) and New York State (102 per 100 000 in 2006). Two randomised placebo-controlled trials have recently (2018) shown the procedure to be no more effective than placebo or conservative approaches. Health systems appear unable to avoid the rapid widespread use of procedures of unknown effectiveness, and methods for ceasing ineffective treatments are under-developed. CONCLUSIONS:Without good evidence, nearly 30 000 subacromial decompression procedures have been commissioned each year in England, costing over £1 billion since 2007/2008. Even higher rates of procedures are carried out in countries with less regulated health systems. High quality randomised trials need to be initiated before widespread adoption of promising operative procedures to avoid overtreatment and wasted resources, and methods to prevent or desist the use of ineffective procedures need to be expedited
Trans-cerebral HCO3- and PCO2 exchange during acute respiratory acidosis and exercise-induced metabolic acidosis in humans
This study investigated trans-cerebral internal jugular venous-arterial bicarbonate ([HCO(3)(−)]) and carbon dioxide tension (PCO(2)) exchange utilizing two separate interventions to induce acidosis: 1) acute respiratory acidosis via elevations in arterial PCO(2) (PaCO(2)) (n = 39); and 2) metabolic acidosis via incremental cycling exercise to exhaustion (n = 24). During respiratory acidosis, arterial [HCO(3)(−)] increased by 0.15 ± 0.05 mmol ⋅ l(−1) per mmHg elevation in PaCO(2) across a wide physiological range (35 to 60 mmHg PaCO(2); P < 0.001). The narrowing of the venous-arterial [HCO(3)(−)] and PCO(2) differences with respiratory acidosis were both related to the hypercapnia-induced elevations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) (both P < 0.001; subset n = 27); thus, trans-cerebral [HCO(3)(−)] exchange (CBF × venous-arterial [HCO(3)(−)] difference) was reduced indicating a shift from net release toward net uptake of [HCO(3)(−)] (P = 0.004). Arterial [HCO(3)(−)] was reduced by −0.48 ± 0.15 mmol ⋅ l(−1) per nmol ⋅ l(−1) increase in arterial [H(+)] with exercise-induced acidosis (P < 0.001). There was no relationship between the venous-arterial [HCO(3)(−)] difference and arterial [H(+)] with exercise-induced acidosis or CBF; therefore, trans-cerebral [HCO(3)(−)] exchange was unaltered throughout exercise when indexed against arterial [H(+)] or pH (P = 0.933 and P = 0.896, respectively). These results indicate that increases and decreases in systemic [HCO(3)(−)] – during acute respiratory/exercise-induced metabolic acidosis, respectively – differentially affect cerebrovascular acid-base balance (via trans-cerebral [HCO(3)(−)] exchange)
Design of a Microsphere-Based High-Throughput Gene Expression Assay to Determine Estrogenic Potential
Recently gene expression studies have been multiplied at an accelerated rate by the use of high-density microarrays. By assaying thousands of transcripts at a time, microarrays have led to the discovery of dozens of genes involved in particular biochemical processes, for example, the response of a tissue/organ to a given chemical with therapeutic or toxic properties. The next step in these studies is to focus on the response of a subset of relevant genes to verify or refine potential therapeutic or toxic properties. We have developed a sensitive, high-throughput gene expression assay for this purpose. In this assay, based on the Luminex xMAP system, carefully selected oligonucleotides were covalently linked to fluorescently coded microspheres that are hybridized to biotinylated cRNA followed by amplification of the signal, which results in a rapid, sensitive, multiplexed assay platform. Using this system, we have developed an RNA expression profiling assay specific for 17 estrogen-responsive transcripts and three controls. This assay can evaluate up to 100 distinct analytes simultaneously in a single sample, in a 96-well plate format. This system has improved sensitivity versus existing microsphere-based assays and has sensitivity and precision comparable with or better than microarray technology. We have achieved detection levels down to 1 amol, detecting rare messages in complex cRNA samples, using as little as 2.5 μg starting cRNA. This assay offers increased throughput with decreased costs compared with existing microarray technologies, with the trade-off being in the total number of transcripts that can be analyzed
