Orbital Selective Magnetism in the Spin-Ladder Iron Selenides BaKFeSe
Here we show that the 2.80(8) {\mu}B/Fe block antiferromagnetic order of
BaFe2Se3 transforms into stripe antiferromagnetic order in KFe2Se3 with a
decrease in moment to 2.1(1) {\mu}B/Fe. This reduction is larger than expected
from the change in electron count from Ba to K, and occurs with
the loss of the displacements of Fe atoms from ideal positions in the ladders,
as found by neutron pair distribution function analysis. Intermediate
compositions remain insulating, and magnetic susceptibility measurements show a
suppression of magnetic order and probable formation of a spin-glass. Together,
these results imply an orbital-dependent selection of magnetic versus bonded
behavior, driven by relative bandwidths and fillings.Comment: Final versio
The struggle of a good friend getting old:cellular senescence in viral responses and therapy
Cellular senescence is a state of stable cell cycle arrest associated with macromolecular alterations and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and molecules. Senescence-associated phenotypes restrict damage propagation and activate immune responses, two essential processes involved in response to viral infections. However, excessive accumulation and persistence of senescent cells can become detrimental and promote pathology and dysfunctions. Various pharmacological interventions, including antiviral therapies, lead to aberrant and premature senescence. Here, we review the molecular mechanisms by which viral infections and antiviral therapy induce senescence. We highlight the importance of these processes in attenuating viral dissemination and damage propagation, but also how prematurely induced senescent cells can promote detrimental adverse effects in humans. We describe which sequelae due to viral infections and treatment can be partly due to excessive and aberrant senescence. Finally, we propose that pharmacological strategies which eliminate senescent cells or suppress their secretory phenotype could mitigate side effects and alleviate the onset of additional morbidities. These strategies can become extremely beneficial in patients recovering from viral infections or undergoing antiviral therapy
Accuracy and effectualness of closed-form, frequency-domain waveforms for non-spinning black hole binaries
The coalescences of binary black hole (BBH) systems, here taken to be
non-spinning, are among the most promising sources for gravitational wave (GW)
ground-based detectors, such as LIGO and Virgo. To detect the GW signals
emitted by BBHs, and measure the parameters of the source, one needs to have in
hand a bank of GW templates that are both effectual (for detection), and
accurate (for measurement). We study the effectualness and the accuracy of the
two types of parametrized banks of templates that are directly defined in the
frequency-domain by means of closed-form expressions, namely 'post-Newtonian'
(PN) and 'phenomenological' models. In absence of knowledge of the exact
waveforms, our study assumes as fiducial, target waveforms the ones generated
by the most accurate version of the effective one body (EOB) formalism. We find
that, for initial GW detectors the use, at each point of parameter space, of
the best closed-form template (among PN and phenomenological models) leads to
an effectualness >97% over the entire mass range and >99% in an important
fraction of parameter space; however, when considering advanced detectors, both
of the closed-form frequency-domain models fail to be effectual enough in
significant domains of the two-dimensional [total mass and mass ratio]
parameter space. Moreover, we find that, both for initial and advanced
detectors, the two closed-form frequency-domain models fail to satisfy the
minimal required accuracy standard in a very large domain of the
two-dimensional parameter space. In addition, a side result of our study is the
determination, as a function of the mass ratio, of the maximum frequency at
which a frequency-domain PN waveform can be 'joined' onto a NR-calibrated EOB
waveform without undue loss of accuracy.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
The Cauchy convergence of T and P-approximant templates for test-mass Kerr binary systems
In this work we examine the Cauchy convergence of both post-Newtonian
(T-approximant) and re-summed post-Newtonian (P-approximant) templates for the
case of a test-mass orbiting a Kerr black hole along a circular equatorial
orbit. The Cauchy criterion demands that the inner product between the and
order approximation approaches unity, as we increase the order of
approximation. In previous works, it has been shown that we achieve greater
fitting factors and better parameter estimation using the P-approximant
templates for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. In this work, we show
that the P-approximant templates also display a faster Cauchy convergence
making them a superior template to the standard post-Newtonian templates.Comment: 5 pages, Replaced with shortened published versio
Experimental study of digital image processing techniques for LANDSAT data
The author has identified the following significant results. Results are reported for: (1) subscene registration, (2) full scene rectification and registration, (3) resampling techniques, (4) and ground control point (GCP) extraction. Subscenes (354 pixels x 234 lines) were registered to approximately 1/4 pixel accuracy and evaluated by change detection imagery for three cases: (1) bulk data registration, (2) precision correction of a reference subscene using GCP data, and (3) independently precision processed subscenes. Full scene rectification and registration results were evaluated by using a correlation technique to measure registration errors of 0.3 pixel rms thoughout the full scene. Resampling evaluations of nearest neighbor and TRW cubic convolution processed data included change detection imagery and feature classification. Resampled data were also evaluated for an MSS scene containing specular solar reflections
