Le régime amaigrissant : une pratique inégalitaire ?

Les régimes amaigrissants sont des pratiques différenciées en termes de genre, de corpulence et de classe sociale. L’analyse de quarante-quatre entretiens semi‑directifs avec des hommes et des femmes en surcharge pondérale permet d’expliquer ces différences en termes de normes alimentaires et corporelles. La prégnance des normes esthétiques imposant aux femmes de contrôler leur poids est renforcée par les discours de santé publique sur le danger du surpoids et de l’obésité. Si les pratiques amaigrissantes existent aussi chez les hommes, elles sont moins souvent associées à une rationalisation, une planification et un contrôle permanent de ce qui est ingéré. Ces pratiques étant à la fois majoritairement inefficaces et parfois dangereuses, elles contribuent aux inégalités de genre dans la société contemporaine.Slimming diets are practices differentiated in terms of gender, weight and social class. The analysis of forty-four semi-structured interviews with overweight and obese men and women allows explaining these differences in terms of eating habits and body norms. Moreover, the importance of aesthetics norms pushing women to control their weight is strengthened by the public health discourses about the danger of overweight and obesity. Although men also try to lose some weight, they rationalize, organize and control much less what they eat than women. Because practices aiming at losing weight are mainly ineffective and sometimes dangerous, they contribute to gender inequality in modern society

Les représentations sociales du corps « gros »

This article describes the social representations of “overweight” and “obesity” of practitioners (doctors, dietitians, psychologists) and patients (people medically categorized “overweight” or “obese”). The analysis of the terms they use, of their moral beliefs, and of their social and aesthetic norms helps to explain why people define many situations as “stigmatizing” or “discriminating”. The medical, dietetic, and psychological professionals describe the complexity of weight management, their professional dissatisfactions, and what they expect from their patients. Analyzing social representations sheds light on the gap between beliefs and mutual expectations and how these impact the management of overweight and obese patients. This analysis is also a way to illustrate the diversity of each studied group, in terms of professional background or daily-life experiences, and their consequences on medical interactions
