Technological roots and structural implications of the double bubble at the turn of the Century

This paper argues that the two boom and bust episodes of the turn of the Century – the Internet mania and crash of 1990s and the easy liquidity boom and bust of 2000s– are two distinct components of a single structural phenomenon. They are essentially the equivalent of 1929 developed in two stages, one centred on technological innovation, the other on financial innovation. Hence, the frequent references to that crash, to the 1930s and to Bretton Woods, are not simple journalistic metaphors for interpreting the “credit crunch” and its solution, but rather the intuitive recognition of a fundamental similarity between those events and the current ones. The paper holds that such major boom and bust episodes are endogenous to the way in which the market economy evolves and assimilates successive technological revolutions. It will discuss why it occurred in two bubbles on this occasion; it examines the differences and continuities between the two episodes and presents an interpretation of their nature and consequences

Great Surges of development and alternative forms of globalization

The present understanding of globalization is inextricably tied to the free market ideology for both proponents and opponents. This paper will argue that globalization has many potential forms of which the neo-liberal recipe, applied up to now, is only one. Globalization need not be neo-liberal. A pro-development version of globalization has not yet been designed or defended as such. It will be argued that, without it, not only would it be very difficult to relaunch development in the South but also to overcome the present instabilities, imbalances and recessionary trends in the economies of the North.

Long Waves and Changes in Socioeconomic Organisation

SUMMARY This article presents a set of hypotheses to explain the Kondratiev long waves. It suggests that they can be understood as the rise and fall of successive and distinct modes of growth of the total system, based on successive technological revolutions. Each of these revolutions, as it diffuses throughout the productive sphere, results in a mismatch with the previously established socio?institutional framework, which must be transformed to re?establish coherence and unleash a new upswing. RESUMEN Ondas largas y cambios en la organización socioeconómica Este artículo presenta un conjunto de hipótesis para explicar las ondas largas de Kondratiev. Sugiere que éstas pueden ser entendidas como el alza y descenso de sucesivos y diferentes modos de crecimiento de todo el sistema, basados en sucesivas revoluciones tecnológicas. La difusión de cada una de estas revoluciones tecnológicas dentro de la esfera productiva, resulta en un desajuste con el marco socio?institucional preexistente, el que debe trasnformarse para reestablecer la coherencia y permitir un nuevo ascenso. RESUME Longues vagues et changements dans l'organisation socio?économique Cet article présente un ensemble d'hypothèses qui expliquerait les longues vagues de Kondratiev. Il suggère qu'elles peuvent être considérées comme la montée et la chute de modes de croissance successifs et distincts du système total, basées sur des révolutions technologiques successives. Chacune de ces révolutions, en se répandant à travers la sphère productive, crée un conflit avec la charpente socio?institutionnelle établie auparavant, qui doit être transformée pour rétablir une cohérence et provoquer une nouvelle remontée

This paper is an English translation, by the author herself, of a paper that until now has only been published in Spanish. The editors of this working paper series are of the opinion that the paper - although written 24 years ago - represents such an important element in the writings of Carlota Perez that it should be made available also to the English-speaking research community. The paper presents an early notion of a techno-economic paradigm and - although internet was years away from being available - it is indeed an outline of the paradigm we presently live in. Many of the issues raised here, like alternative sources of energy and biotechnology, are still with us today, and many of the predictions have proved to be based on accurate perceptions.

Street Art, de la calle al museo. Las exposiciones en museos españoles de Eltono y Susso33.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo acercarnos al Street Art, como fenómeno de la subcultura que ha pasado al ámbito de los museos. Se ha realizado un estudio histórico artístico desde su inicio histórico, en los años setenta del siglo XX, hasta el momento actual, y cómo este movimiento ha pasado de un entorno urbano a un ámbito comercial e institucional como las ferias de arte, casas de subastas, galerías y museos. Se ha tratado el caso español de una forma más concreta. Se ha hecho una mención especial al festival Asalto de Zaragoza, por ser el primero en el ámbito nacional, así como a las primeras galerías especializadas en grafiti y las primeras ferias de arte urbano, para finalizar el presente trabajo con las primeras exposiciones de arte urbano en un ámbito museístico, como es el caso de los artistas Eltono y Susso33 en Artium y Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente (CEART). <br /
