    The TALP-UPC phrase-based translation system for EACL-WMT 2009

    This study presents the TALP-UPC submission to the EACL Fourth Worskhop on Statistical Machine Translation 2009 evaluation campaign. It outlines the architecture and configuration of the 2009 phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT) system, putting emphasis on the major novelty of this year: combination of SMT systems implementing different word reordering algorithms.     The TALP-UPC phrase-based translation systems for WMT12: morphology simplification and domain adaptation

    This paper describes the UPC participation in the WMT 12 evaluation campaign. All sys- tems presented are based on standard phrase- based Moses systems. Variations adopted sev- eral improvement techniques such as mor- phology simplification and generation and do- main adaptation. The morphology simpli- fication overcomes the data sparsity prob- lem when translating into morphologically- rich languages such as Spanish by translat- ing first to a morphology-simplified language and secondly leave the morphology gener- ation to an independent classification task. The domain adaptation approach improves the SMT system by adding new translation units learned from MT-output and reference align- ment. Results depict an improvement on TER, METEOR, NIST and BLEU scores compared to our baseline system, obtaining on the of- ficial test set more benefits from the domain adaptation approach than from the morpho- logical generalization method.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Improving the User Experience of the rCUDA Remote GPU Virtualization Framework

    Graphics processing units (GPUs) are being increasingly embraced by the high-performance computing community as an effective way to reduce execution time by accelerating parts of their applications. remote CUDA (rCUDA) was recently introduced as a software solution to address the high acquisition costs and energy consumption of GPUs that constrain further adoption of this technology. Specifically, rCUDA is a middleware that allows a reduced number of GPUs to be transparently shared among the nodes in a cluster. Although the initial prototype versions of rCUDA demonstrated its functionality, they also revealed concerns with respect to usability, performance, and support for new CUDA features. In response, in this paper, we present a new rCUDA version that (1) improves usability by including a new component that allows an automatic transformation of any CUDA source code so that it conforms to the needs of the rCUDA framework, (2) consistently features low overhead when using remote GPUs thanks to an improved new communication architecture, and (3) supports multithreaded applications and CUDA libraries. As a result, for any CUDA-compatible program, rCUDA now allows the use of remote GPUs within a cluster with low overhead, so that a single application running in one node can use all GPUs available across the cluster, thereby extending the single-node capability of CUDA.     Boosting the performance of remote GPU virtualization using InfiniBand Connect-IB and PCIe 3.0

However, the capabilities of these devices are still generally underutilized. Remote GPU virtualization techniques can help increase GPU utilization rates, while reducing acquisition and maintenance costs. The overhead of using a remote GPU instead of a local one is introduced mainly by the difference in performance between the internode network and the intranode PCIe link. In this paper we show how using the new InfiniBand Connect-IB network adapters (attaining similar throughput to that of the most recently emerged GPUs) boosts the performance of remote GPU virtualization, reducing the overhead to a mere 0.19% in the application tested.This work was funded by the Generalitat Valenciana under Grant PROMETEOII/2013/009 of the PROMETEO program phase II.     SLURM Support for Remote GPU Virtualization: Implementation and Performance Study

However, SLURM is not designed to handle resources such as graphics processing units (GPUs). Concretely, although SLURM can use a generic resource plugin (GRes) to manage GPUs, with this solution the hardware accelerators can only be accessed by the job that is in execution on the node to which the GPU is attached. This is a serious constraint for remote GPU virtualization technologies, which aim at providing a user-transparent access to all GPUs in cluster, independently of the specific location of the node where the application is running with respect to the GPU node. In this work we introduce a new type of device in SLURM, "rgpu", in order to gain access from any application node to any GPU node in the cluster using rCUDA as the remote GPU virtualization solution. With this new scheduling mechanism, a user can access any number of GPUs, as SLURM schedules the tasks taking into account all the graphics accelerators available in the complete cluster.     The TALP & I2R SMT Systems for IWSLT 2008

    This paper gives a description of the statistical machine translation (SMT) systems developed at the TALP Research Center of the UPC (Universitat Polit`ecnica de Catalunya) for our participation in the IWSLT’08 evaluation campaign. We present Ngram-based (TALPtuples) and phrase-based (TALPphrases) SMT systems. The paper explains the 2008 systems’ architecture and outlines translation schemes we have used, mainly focusing on the new techniques that are challenged to improve speech-to-speech translation quality. The novelties we have introduced are: improved reordering method, linear combination of translation and reordering models and new technique dealing with punctuation marks insertion for a phrase-based SMT system. This year we focus on the Arabic-English, Chinese-Spanish and pivot Chinese-(English)-Spanish translation tasks.Postprint (published version

    Structural basis of mitochondrial dysfunction in response to cytochrome c phosphorylation at tyrosine 48

    Regulation of mitochondrial activity allows cells to adapt to changing conditions and to control oxidative stress, and its dysfunction can lead to hypoxia-dependent pathologies such as ischemia and cancer. Although cytochrome c phosphorylation—in particular, at tyrosine 48—is a key modulator of mitochondrial signaling, its action and molecular basis remain unknown. Here we mimic phosphorylation of cytochrome c by replacing tyrosine 48 with p-carboxy-methyl-L-phenylalanine (pCMF). The NMR structure of the resulting mutant reveals significant conformational shifts and enhanced dynamics around pCMF that could explain changes observed in its functionality: The phosphomimetic mutation impairs cytochrome c diffusion between respiratory complexes, enhances hemeprotein peroxidase and reactive oxygen species scavenging activities, and hinders caspase-dependent apoptosis.     Avances en los estudios arqueológicos, geoarqueológicos y paleoambientales en las Sierras Orientales de Tandilia: resultados preliminares de los sitios Alero El Mirador y Abrigo La Grieta

    Este trabajo presenta las características de los registros arqueológicos de dos sitios recientemente retomados, denominados Alero El Mirador y Abrigo La Grieta. Se dan a conocer los resultados del análisis de los conjuntos líticos, del registro zooarqueológico y paleoambiental (obtenidos a partir de la evidencias de diatomeas, antracología y fitolitos), y su relación con las unidades estratigráficas. Esta información proxy permite hipotetizar aspectos del manejo antrópico de recursos naturales locales y de eventos paleoclimáticos ocurridos en el sector serrano de Tandilia oriental durante distintos tramos de la secuencia Pleistoceno-Holoceno.This paper presents the characteristics of the archaeological record of two sites recently taken up, called Alero El Mirador and Abrigo La Grieta. The study of different proxy data like lithic assemblages, zooarchaeological and paleoenvironmental record (obtained by diatoms, phytoliths and anthracology inferences) and their relationship to stratigraphic units, allows us to hypothesize anthropic management aspects of local natural resources and paleoclimatic events occurred in the eastern of Tandilia hill during different moments of the Pleistocene-Holocene archaeological sequence.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
