Late Points and Cover Times of Projections of Planar Symmetric Random Walks on the Lattice Torus
We examine the sets of late points of a symmetric random walk on
projected onto the torus , culminating in a limit theorem for the cover
time of the toral random walk. This extends the work done for the simple random
walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to a large class of random walks projected onto
the lattice torus. The approach uses comparisons between planar and toral
hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1209.238
The Life and Legacy of Chief Judge Lawrence H. Cooke: Truly an Exemplary Life. A Life Well Lived
It is an appropriate tribute to the late Chief Judge of New York, Lawrence H. Cooke, that this article be devoted to a man who many leaders of the bench, bar, and academia consider to be the greatest jurist to ever serve on New York State\u27s highest court. Chief Judge Cooke, better known as Larry, served with honor and distinction as an associate judge of the Court of Appeals, and later as Chief Judge
V/STOL aircraft and the problem of jet-induced suckdown
The suckdown condition encountered when jet propelled, Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft hover near the ground is described. A discussion of this ground effect problem and how it is being investigated is followed by a more detailed description of one of the methods researchers are using to investigate the basic mechanisms that influence the suckdown condition. Specific parameters that are taken into account include the height of the jet above the ground, jet exit conditions, and model geometry. Data from a current investigation is presented along with some conclusions from other recent investigations in order to relate the significance of some of the parameters influencing suckdown. Suggestions are made for additional testing methods which might be useful to researchers investigating the mechanisms involved in jet induced suckdown
The complex territory of well-being: contestable evidence, contentious theories and speculative conclusions
This paper brings together evidence and theories from a number of disciplines and thinkers that highlight multiple, sometimes incommensurable understandings about well-beings. Three broad strands are identified. The first strand is categorised as the 'hard' science of well-being and its stagnation or decline in modern western society. The second strand, social and political theory suggests that conceptualisations of well-being are shaped by aspects of western culture, often in line with the demands of a capitalist economic society. The third theme pursues the critique of consumer culture's influence on well-being but in the context of broader human problems. This approach draws on ecology, ethics, philosophy and much else to suggest we urgently need to reconsider what it means to be human, if we are to survive and thrive
